Florida man receives 8-month prison term in first felony sentence from Jan. 6 Capitol protest

I did not research any details about this man or his past or his trial, but this appears to be a harsh punishment for a political protest! I hope, Mr. Hodgkins will appeal his sentence!

An extraordinary hunt has happened for the protesters of the January 6th Capitol protest event! About 500 were so far arrested. We are still waiting for such efforts regarding left-wing protesters.

For prosecutors to claim "like each rioter, contributed to the collective threat to democracy" is ludicrous at best! Very questionable!
The prosecutor acknowledged that Hodgkins did not destroy any property “and he did not injure anyone.”

E.g. forensic recounts of the November 2020 presidential election are still going on or are being considered in several states and early indications are that there were possibly issues with election integrity!

The Lost Utopia In Pakistan's Mountains: Road To Shangri-La with David Adams

Recommendable!

Paul Othma am 17. Juni 1953: Der Löwe von Bitterfeld

Empfehlenswert!

"... Laschet, according to the Times, “said the west should resist slipping into a cold war mentality when it came to its geopolitical contest with China,” telling the paper, “The 21st century is very different and the prism of how the world looked before 1989 offers limited advice.” He said, “We have a multipolar world [now] with different actors.” ...
Laschet continued, “And there the European response was cautious, because, yes, China is a competitor and a systemic rival, it has a different model of society, but it’s also a partner, particularly in things like fighting climate change.” ..."

Ultralight material withstands supersonic microparticle impacts

Recommendable!

"A new study by engineers at MIT, Caltech, and ETH Zürich shows that “nanoarchitected” materials — materials designed from precisely patterned nanoscale structures — may be a promising route to lightweight armor, protective coatings, blast shields, and other impact-resistant materials.
The researchers have fabricated an ultralight material made from nanometer-scale carbon struts that give the material toughness and mechanical robustness. The team tested the material’s resilience by shooting it with microparticles at supersonic speeds, and found that the material, which is thinner than the width of a human hair, prevented the miniature projectiles from tearing through it. ...
At Caltech, they first fabricated a nanoarchitected material using two-photon lithography, a technique that uses a fast, high-powered laser to solidify microscopic structures in a photosensitive resin. The researchers constructed a repeating pattern known as a tetrakaidecahedron — a lattice configuration composed of microscopic struts."

Human Protein Dissolves Bacterial Membranes

Very recommendable! Amazing stuff! Will this become the next generation of antibiotics?

"... Researchers have discovered that a molecule made throughout much of the body wipes out invading bacteria like a detergent attacking an oily stain.
This killer cleaner, a protein known as APOL3, thwarts infections by dissolving bacterial membranes ..."

"Most human cells, not just those belonging to the immune system, mount protective responses to infection when activated by the immune cytokine interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). How IFN-γ confers this function in nonimmune cells and tissues is poorly understood. Gaudet et al. used genome-scale CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to identify apolipoprotein L-3 (APOL3) as an IFN-γ–induced bactericidal protein that protects human epithelium, endothelium, and fibroblasts against infection ...  APOL3 directly targets bacteria in the host cell cytosol and kills them by dissolving their anionic membranes into lipoprotein complexes. This work reveals a detergent-like mechanism enlisted during human cell-autonomous immunity to combat intracellular pathogens."

DeepMind’s AI for protein structure is coming to the masses

Good news! Google's many contributions over the years to AI are deep mind boggling!

"... Through an enormous experimental effort, the structures of around 100,000 unique proteins have been determined, but this represents a small fraction of the billions of known protein sequences. Structural coverage is bottlenecked by the months to years of painstaking effort required to determine a single protein structure. Accurate computational approaches are needed to address this gap and to enable large-scale structural bioinformatics. Predicting the 3-D structure that a protein will adopt based solely on its amino acid sequence, the structure prediction component of the ‘protein folding problem’, has been an important open research problem for more than 50 years. ...
Here we provide the first computational method that can regularly predict protein structures with atomic accuracy even where no similar structure is known. We validated an entirely redesigned version of our neural network-based model, AlphaFold, in the challenging 14th Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction (CASP14)15, demonstrating accuracy competitive with experiment in a majority of cases and greatly outperforming other methods. ..."

Could all your digital photos be stored as DNA?

Recommendable! Sounds almost to good to be true!

An unsustainable situation:
"On Earth right now, there are about 10 trillion gigabytes of digital data, and every day, humans produce emails, photos, tweets, and other digital files that add up to another 2.5 million gigabytes of data. Much of this data is stored in enormous facilities known as exabyte data centers (an exabyte is 1 billion gigabytes), which can be the size of several football fields and cost around $1 billion to build and maintain."

African Coelacanths May Live to Be 100

Amazing stuff! The wonders of marine life!

"... “[The] coelacanth appears to have one of, if not the slowest, life histories among marine fish, and close to those of deep-sea sharks and roughies,” ...
As part of their study, the team members analyzed the scales of embryos and estimated that they were around five years old, indicating “that the gestation duration is at least 5 years contrary to the 1 to 2 years suggested by earlier studies,” ..."

"The extant coelacanth was discovered in 1938; its biology and ecology remain poorly known due to the low number of specimens collected. Only two previous studies have attempted to determine its age and growth. They suggested a maximum lifespan of 20 years, placing the coelacanth among the fastest growing marine fish. These findings are at odds with the coelacanth’s other known biological features including low oxygen-extraction capacity, slow metabolism, ovoviviparity, and low fecundity, typical of fish with slow life histories and slow growth. In this study, we use polarized light microscopy to study growth on scales based on a large sample of 27 specimens. Our results demonstrate for the first time nearly imperceptible annual calcified structures (circuli) on the scales and show that maximal age of the coelacanth was underestimated by a factor of 5. ..."

U.S. Department of Injustice

Recommendable! Bizarre and akin to a banana republic!

"While the Michael Flynn prosecution is currently imploding, no matter how it ends, the key lesson is clear: The nakedly coercive tactics routinely used by federal prosecutors to obtain admissions of guilt render those admissions utterly unreliable — not just in Flynn’s case, but in every case. Congress should act immediately to restore public confidence in the integrity of our criminal justice system by reforming this fundamentally lawless and un‐American practice. And the Flynn case shows why that reform should be a top legislative priority. ...
And that’s where things get murky. We don’t know precisely what was said during the interview due to the FBI’s archaic and palpably self‐serving policy of not recording interviews electronically but instead having agents take notes, which are then typed up into a formal memorandum of interview called a Form 302. Notably, the original 302 of Flynn’s interview has never been produced; instead, the DOJ produced to Flynn’s attorneys a version of the form that had been substantially edited by Strzok, FBI lawyer Lisa Page, and perhaps others not present at the interview, rendering its accuracy open to question. ..."

Maternal Vaginal Fluids Mimic Microbe Transfer of Vaginal Birth

Amazing stuff!

"Babies born by C-section carry an increased risk of immune and metabolic disorders later in life, which studies have suggested may be associated with the communities of microbes on and in their bodies at the time of birth. The diversity of microbes hosted by Cesarean-born babies differs from that of those born by vaginal delivery, a difference that may arise because vaginally born neonates are colonized by microbes as they pass through the birth canal. ...
While this study is based on the idea that the vagina is the source of a child’s first microbes, that’s still debated. Willem de Vos, a microbiologist at the University of Helsinki and Wageningen University who was not involved in the study but has collaborated with one of the coauthors, says that fecal—not vaginal—microbes are the ones colonizing the infant gut. This new study shows that the vagina could work as “a delivery system of fecal microbes,” he says, but adds that a fecal transplant might be more efficient than exposure to vaginal fluids. ..."

‘Invisible China: how the urban–rural divide threatens China’s rise’

Very recommendable! The tyranny and legacy of Mao Zedong, the world's most notorious and worst mass murderer, lives on thanks to the Communist Party of China!

"... [members of the rural population] seldom succeed, because most working-age men and many women have migrated to cities for employment, leaving their children to be brought up by their grandparents and educated in the local school. The parents return to the village annually for the Lunar New Year festival but play a minimal role in their children’s upbringing. It’s a sad and all too common story affecting more than 100 million Chinese households.

[the author] who has been studying rural China for four decades ... Invisible China, focuses on an issue that has received little attention, China’s vast, isolated and long-neglected rural population. As the authors see it, the rural challenge has ‘remained invisible for too long, not only to the outside world but also to many Chinese’. ...
China’s urban workforce, the driver of the country’s spectacular growth, comes mainly from rural areas. Basic skills were sufficient to move China quickly from poverty to middle-income status. ...
China’s household registration (hukou) system, which strictly separates the urban and rural populations, prevents rural migrants from settling in cities and getting a high-quality education for their children. The burden for educating China’s workforce falls on the country’s rural schools, which are generally of low quality.
As a result, China is teetering on the brink of the ‘middle-income trap’. Beating the trap is no mean feat. Of the 101 countries that were considered middle income in 1960, half a century later only 13 had become high income. The ‘graduates’ include Ireland, Portugal, Spain, the Asian ‘tigers’ (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan) and a few Eastern European countries. Brazil, Malaysia, Thailand and many others failed to make the cut. ...
Mao Zedong established the hukou system in the 1950s and actually worked against the accumulation of human capital. ...
The urban–rural divide persists to this day. Over 60% of China’s population lives in cities, but only 36% has urban hukou. Other urban dwellers—over 300 million strong—work and live in a grey area. ..."

50 years ago, scientists found a virus lurking in human cancer cells

This discovery was a sensation back then! Cancer is history, but progress is too slow!

"Scientists estimate that a handful of viruses cause around 12 to 20 percent of human cancers. Vaccines are now available for hepatitis B virus, which can cause liver cancer, and human papillomavirus, responsible for most cervical cancers. But a vaccine for the first virus ever linked to cancer has eluded scientists. Epstein-Barr virus, or EBV, infects about 90 percent of people and can cause Burkitt’s lymphoma and other cancers in a small fraction of those infected. Developing a vaccine has been a challenge partly because EBV can hide in the body for decades before causing problems. Several vaccine candidates are being tested in people, including one nanoparticle-based vaccine that may trigger a potent immune response."

The golden age of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue

Very recommendable! Good news! The emergence of India as a power for peace, open seas, and prosperity!

"... the strategic grouping joining Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. Since its revival in 2017 amid rising shared concerns about China, the group has consistently defied its critics and originally modest expectations. This year, the Quad has not only survived the first major change of government among its members but has thrived—not least because India, originally the most reluctant member, is now all-in on the grouping. ...
A Quad-Plus group of seven countries was later formed to , and last year, the four countries held the first Quad naval exercises in over a decade. ...
Yet, the most encouraging omen for the Quad and a major reason for its recent success lies with India’s change of heart. Once skeptical of reviving the group, New Delhi has become a driver of recent progress as it confronts an escalating rivalry with Beijing and declining confidence in its former patron, Moscow. In a stark reversal from the past, Indian officials are now some of the most vocal champions of the Quad and its conceptual cousin, the Indo-Pacific. They have also begun facing down criticism from Beijing and Moscow head-on
...
On one hand, India experienced growing trust and comfort cooperating with the United States and the other Quad democracies, diminished ideological attachment to its previous Cold War philosophy of nonalignment, and outspoken advocacy for the Quad and Indo-Pacific by the influential Indian minister of external affairs, S. Jaishankar. ...
One consequence of this sea change: Long-standing Chinese propaganda efforts to discourage Indian participation in the Quad are only adding fuel to the fire—not least because the language, which alternates between bullying and patronizing, only ends up emphasizing Chinese threats. In a March column, China’s Global Times warned India’s participation in the Quad meant it had become a “negative asset” to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) groupings led by Beijing and Moscow. ...
India’s views of the Quad are a product of its unique position on the geopolitical map: relatively vulnerable and alone on the western flank with its more powerful partners clustered safely together on the eastern flank. India is the only member of the Quad that borders China, has been invaded by China, has an active land border dispute with China, is wedged between two nuclear-armed rivals, and lacks treaty alliance commitments from the other Quad members. ..."

A Spatiotemporal Symphony of Light

Amazing stuff!

"... Single-layer materials, alternatively known as 2D materials, are in themselves novel materials, solids consisting of a single layer of atoms. Graphene, the first 2D material discovered, was isolated for the first time in 2004 ... Now, for the first time, Technion scientists show how pulses of light move inside these materials. ...
But when moving through certain few-layers solids, light slows down almost a thousand-fold. This occurs because the light makes the atoms of these special materials vibrate to create sound waves (also called phonons), and these atomic sound waves create light when they vibrate. Thus, the pulse is actually a tightly bound combination of sound and light, called “phonon-polariton.” Lit up, the material “sings.”"

"... The nanometric spatial resolution and femtosecond temporal resolution will be useful for probing the excitation dynamics of these materials."

"Coherent optical excitations in two-dimensional (2D) materials, 2D polaritons, can generate a plethora of optical phenomena that arise from the extraordinary dispersion relations that do not exist in regular materials. Probing of the dynamical phenomena of 2D polaritons requires simultaneous spatial and temporal imaging capabilities and could reveal unknown coherent optical phenomena in 2D materials. Here, we present a spatiotemporal measurement of 2D wave packet dynamics, from its formation to its decay, using an ultrafast transmission electron microscope driven by femtosecond midinfrared pulses. ...
The ability to coherently excite phonon-polariton wave packets and probe their evolution in a nondestructive manner reveals intriguing dispersion-dependent dynamics that includes splitting of multibranch wave packets and, unexpectedly, wave packet deceleration and acceleration. ..."

How neurons get past “no”

Recommendable! About neuronal threshold modulation!

"... The study, published May 25, 2021, in the journal Cell Reports, shows that inhibitory neurons do more than just inhibit neuron activity like an off-switch; paradoxically, they actually increase the amount of information transmitted through the nervous system when it needs to be flexible. To make this possible, inhibitory neurons need to be integrated into the circuit in a specific way. These observations could help scientists better understand and treat disorders involving our ability to focus and modulate signals based on the bigger picture, which are altered in conditions such as anxiety and attention deficit disorders. ...
While the researchers tested the theory in neurons involved in vision, the findings could apply widely to neurons found throughout the brain and nervous system ..."

"... We find that modulation is less detrimental than other forms of neuronal variability and that its negative effects can be nearly completely eliminated if modulation is applied selectively to sparsely responding neurons in a circuit by inhibitory neurons. We verify these predictions in the retina where we find that inhibitory amacrine cells selectively deliver modulation signals to sparsely responding ganglion cell types. Our findings elucidate the central role that inhibitory neurons play in maximizing information transmission under modulation."

Reagan is wearing only a shirt with top buttons open like a Hollywood pirate or does he look like Errol Flynn? This is when Reagan defined a recession (your neighbor loses his job), a depression (you loose your job)  and a recovery (Jimmy Carter loses his job)!

"It requires a return to spiritual and moral values! ... inspiring those brave workers in Poland ..." This appears to be a very significant remark by Ronald Reagan given how early he made it. This remark may have encouraged hope among the members of of the Polish Solidarnosc (founded in 1980) to keep up their good fight with Lech Walesa and other leaders.

Physicists bring human-scale object to near standstill, reaching a quantum state

Amazing stuff! Mind boggling!

"In the last few decades, physicists have found ways to super-cool objects so that their atoms are at a near standstill, or in their “motional ground state.” To date, physicists have wrestled small objects such as clouds of millions of atoms, or nanogram-scale objects, into such pure quantum states.

Now for the first time, scientists at MIT and elsewhere have cooled a large, human-scale object to close to its motional ground state. The object isn’t tangible in the sense of being situated at one location, but is the combined motion of four separate objects, each weighing about 40 kilograms. The “object” that the researchers cooled has an estimated mass of about 10 kilograms ...

The researchers took advantage of the ability of the Laser Interfrometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) to measure the motion of the masses with extreme precision and super-cool the collective motion of the masses to 77 nanokelvins, just shy of the object’s predicted ground state of 10 nanokelvins. ..."

"... We prepared the center-of-mass motion of a 10-kilogram mechanical oscillator ... The reduction in temperature, from room temperature to 77 nanokelvin, is commensurate with an 11 orders-of-magnitude suppression of quantum back-action by feedback and a 13 orders-of-magnitude increase in the mass of an object prepared close to its motional ground state. Our approach will enable the possibility of probing gravity on massive quantum systems."

Solar device generates electricity and desalinates water with no waste brine

Good news!

"... Indeed, there are now around 16,000 desalination plants around the world producing about 95 million cubic metres of freshwater every day . ...
The MSMD device sits on an evaporative crystallizer that uses latent heat from the last distillation phase to evaporate off the liquid from the final concentrated brine that is produced alongside the freshwater, leaving behind only solid salt. ..."

"... Utilizing the “waste heat” of solar cells for desalination enables the simultaneous production of freshwater and electricity and represents low barrier-of-entry electricity and freshwater supplies to off-grid communities for point of consumption. Herein, guided by theoretical modeling, this project demonstrated that a higher freshwater production rate and a lower solar cell temperature could be achieved simultaneously. With a five-stage photovoltaics-membrane distillation-evaporative crystallizer (PME), we experimentally demonstrated a high and stable freshwater production rate of ∼2.45 kg m−2 h−1 and a reduced solar cell temperature of ∼47°C under 1 sun irradiation, as compared to ∼62°C of the same solar cell working alone. The reduced solar cell temperature led to an 8% increase in its electricity production. Moreover, the concentrated brine produced in the process was fully evaporated by the underlying evaporative crystallizer, achieving zero liquid discharge. ..."

Solar device generates electricity and desalinates water with no waste brine – Physics World A device that can generate electricity while desalinating seawater has been developed by researchers in Saudi Arabia and China, who claim that their new system is highly efficient at performing both tasks. The device uses waste heat from the solar cell for desalination, thereby cooling the solar cell. It also produces no concentrated brine as waste, cutting its potential environmental impact.

Energieträger Wasserstoff: Das Erdöl von morgen

Empfehlenswert!
