The U.S. fears undersea internet cables are vulnerable to Chinese espionage

Almost every day now there are news about Chinese espionage (e.g. Chinese crossing the southern border, Chinese buying up land around sensitive government properties etc.)

How much is real and how much is xenophobia or exaggerated? The many ways the Chinese communists are attempting to spy is impressive.

"American officials are warning telecommunications companies that Chinese repair ships could pose a security risk to cables that ferry internet traffic across the Pacific Ocean. State Department officials said a state-controlled Chinese company that helps repair the cables appeared to be hiding its vessels’ locations from radio and satellite tracking services, which the officials and others said defied easy explanation. Silicon Valley giants including Google and Meta partially own many cables, but they rely on maintenance specialists, including some with foreign ownership."
