There are way too many issues on a typical general election ballot in Arizona that boggles your mind:
- Federal election of presidential candidates
- United States Senators
- United States Representatives
- Four propositions (two local, two statewide)
- State Senators
- State Representatives
- Corporation Commissioners
- County Board of Supervisors
- County Attorney
- County Recorder
- County School Superintendent
- Sheriff
- County Treasurer
- Justice of the Peace
- County Community College at large
- School Governing Board Member
- City Mayor
- City Council Member
- Justices of the Supreme Court
- Judges of the Court of Appeals (6 judges total)
- Judges of the Superior Court (40 judges total)
I understand democratic elections are expensive, disruptive, high voter turnout is desired etc. I also appreciate that citizens can vote for all kinds of judges here in Arizona.
However, this is probably an extreme overload for most citizens to cope with! For example, the election (more exactly, the decision over retention) of judges should be separated from the rest! It would probably better serve the principle that all politics is local when the city and county officials elections were separated! This would probably allow for more competition among local politicians etc.
