This forgotten female mountaineer mapped the Grand Canyon
One reason we may not know much about this early, female mountaineer, i.e. Barbara Washburn, is that she accomplished some of her record breaking feats during World War II and shortly after WW II when priorities were very different.
And again, as so many times, it was a man in her life who supported her (the husband in her case)!
This forgotten female mountaineer mapped the Grand Canyon: Barbara Washburn, a self-described "accidental mountaineer," spent 40 years mapping remote corners of the U.S.
