An Example Of German Efficiency And Organization

Trigger

The World’s Largest Truck Assembly Plant

It’s a marvel of German engineering and organization!

A few (mind boggling) facts:
  1. Built in 1962 by Mercedes Benz
  2. Located in Wörth, Rheinland Pfalz (Rhineland Palatinate), Germany
  3. Assembles trucks of 6.5 metric tons weight
  4. Total employees about 12,000
  5. Employs French (15%) and German workers
  6. Assembles about 470 trucks per day. Each truck is customized and different from any truck built the same day or even built during the same year. Absolutely stunning!
  7. Assembles trucks for about seven different brands
  8. Has its own power plant supplying about 40% of its electrical power and about 25% of heating power
  9. Workers are organized in independent groups managing their own affairs to a significant extent
  10. Just in time and sequence delivery of parts from over 1,000 different foreign and domestic locations
  11. Heavy use of industrial robots (I suspect not enough)
  12. Adjacent proving ground of 550,000 square feet to mimic street conditions all over the world
