Alexander Borodin

We are talking about Alexander Porfiryevich Borodin (1833 – 1887) was a Russian composer, doctor and chemist. Quite a combination of careers and accomplishments.

Here is another webpage with biographical information on him.

Notes

  1. What is lesser known about him is that “He was a notable advocate of women's rights and a proponent of education in Russia and was a founder of the School of Medicine for Women in St. Petersburg
  2. He managed to establish medical courses for women (1872) at the Imperial Medical-Surgical Academy, St. Petersburg
  3. “Borodin next embarked on a career and cause that consumed the remainder of his life. In order to promote the training of women as physicians, he left the Medical Academy in 1872 and founded the School of Medicine for Women, where he lectured until his death. A committed feminist, he worked tirelessly for the education of women ... and spent more and more of his time on women's issues and related philanthropic causes. …””
  4. “He frequently attended town meetings on women's rights.”

There were probably large numbers of men and growing before the 20th century who supported women in male dominated professions or who supported women’s rights and so on. Has anyone ever written a history about those men?
