Houston hate crimes see jump in 2022, report shows. Really!

A nice example of junk journalism!

Many journalists want us to believe that LGBTQ people are very special and constantly persecuted.

What does a Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism do? They find as many as possible crimes as they can whether for real or not. This center seems to be a one man show when you look at their Our People page. Some of the reports that this center publishes seem to be a joke, e.g. with lots of data missing.

I was not able to find this latest report on the website of this Center. Most of the featured reports seem to be dated.

The definition of such crimes is probably suspect.

Look at the small numbers for a metropolitan area like Houston. Like a tempest in a teapot!

"The number of reported hate crimes reported in Houston spiked in 2022, after a nationwide trend that saw surges in many major cities, according to a new report.

Between 2021 and 2022, the number of hate crimes reported to the Houston Police Department increased from 49 to 65, according to data from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University at San Bernardino. That’s an increase of around 26 percent. Reported hate crimes targeted many groups remained consistent with 2021's numbers in Houston, according to the report. But some categories, such as crimes against transgender residents, increased from two in 2021 up to seven in 2022. ..."

"By the numbers:

Between 2021 and 2022, the number of hate crimes reported to the Houston Police Department increased from 49 to 65, according to data from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University at Santa Barbara.

Crimes against transgender and lesbian residents increased the most, up from two in 2021 to seven in 2022 for transgender residents and up from one in 2021 to six in 2022 for lesbian residents.

Difficulties with tracking hate crimes:

The numbers listed in the report differ from the Houston Police Department’s annual hate crime report which showed a decrease from 2021 to 2022, from 50 to 36. However, experts and officials with the office said the difference likely has to do with what counts as a hate crime, versus a hate incident, and people reporting to different groups.  ..."
