What a tempest in a teapot! Maintaining decorum in a highly political environment like the U.S. Senate is certainly an important goal.
First of all, it would probably be a good idea to loosen the conservative, outdated dress code to some reasonable extent in the 21st century.
Second, a few days ago I saw an interview with U.S. Senator Fetterman on YouTube and he seemed to have recovered quite well. Compared to a few months ago, when he appeared to be in a very bad health shape and one had to almost assume he would possibly not survive very long. Thus, he could be asked to dress more formally again, I suppose.
Third, why the Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate Schumer (age 74) agreed to a dress code a la Fetterman is mysterious.
