European Court Of Justice Deferred Again To Big Government

Posted: 12/11/2018

For lack of time, I will not go into details here, but refer the reader to e.g. Source 1 and to do some research. The facts of this case have been well covered in the media for a number of years.

On December 11, 2018, the European Court of Justice decided it was OK for the European Central Bank to purchase Euro trillions of various government bonds over several years. Unfortunately, the Federal Reserve central bank also engaged in similar purchases.

This is just another example how the highest possible court (in this case the European Court of Justice) in a legal dispute about government policies rubber stamps government policies.

Clearly, this massive purchase program of government bonds is a form of government financing, which obviously contravenes the no bail out clause in European agreements about the single currency.

One can also safely assume that these justices have very limited understanding of economics.

The Irresponsible Softness Of The German Criminal Justice System

Posted: 12/9/2018  Correction/Amendment: 1/15/2019

Today (12/9/2018), a German media article reported that two young men tried to incinerate a sleeping homeless man in the streets. Thanks to a courageous intervention by a woman while the crime was committed serious injury or worse was prevented.

According to the article, the police was able to apprehend the two perpetrators within hours after the crime. One of them had a previous criminal record of violent crimes according to police. These two perpetrators were immediately released again by the police.

This is just another of thousands of examples that the German criminal justice system has been for decades recklessly and irresponsibly lenient even with dangerous criminals!

If you want to find out why international comparisons of incarceration rates are so different or skewed between countries, especially between the U.S. and other OECD member countries, then this might be one answer.

One hopes that the woman who prevented this horrible crime will not become the next victim of these criminals!

On Albert Einstein's God Letter

Posted: 12/8/2018

Preamble

I have previously blogged that Albert Einstein was a stupid socialist.

Briefly About The Letter

Written by Einstein at the age of 74 in 1954 (one year before his death) to Eric Gutkind after reading his book, Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt. In early December 2018, this letter was sold at auction for $2.9 million.

Unfortunately, I do not remember ever having read this short letter before.

Was Einstein A Misanthrope?

In this short 1.5 page letter, Einstein writes (emphasis & commentary added):
  1. “... The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weakness ...”
  2. [So much arrogance and ignorance coming from Einstein! God is much more than a word! Believing in something like God is a strength of human beings not a weakness by any stretch of imagination. Was Einstein a misanthrope?]
  3. “... the Bible a collection of honorable, but still purely primitive, legends which are nevertheless pretty childish ...”
  4. [So much arrogance and ignorance coming from Einstein! The Bible contains some of the greatest stories about humanity ever written. There are too many to mention here and I am not a Bible expert, but the just the story of David & Goliath or Jesus wrote cast the first stone if you are innocent and so many more. Was Einstein a misanthrope?]
  5. “... No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this ...”
[Einstein is here referring to the other above quotes. So disappointing that Einstein was such a dumb man. Einstein had a huge attitude problem!]
  6. “... For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstition ...”
[How infantile was Einstein at the end of his life? Were these expressions of severe senility or did he harbor such opinions most of his life?]
  7. “... And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong ... although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything “chosen” about them. ...”
[Again Einstein’s arrogance and ignorance is incredible. The Jewish people have e.g. contributed so much to civilization over thousands of years that Einstein’s contributions to physics are almost negligible in comparison.
Einstein is also reported as saying "Without 'ethical culture' there is no salvation for humanity." (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Einstein). Where did Einstein think ethics, life, or even the universe were coming from?

Einstein Is Highly Overrated

The more I read about Einstein’s life outside of physics, I begin to sense that his nimbus and his popularity is highly overrated. Outside of physics, Einstein was certainly not such a genius!

IBM's Roaring Come Back (In AI)

Posted: 12/8/2018

Remembered For Typewriters & Mainframes

In boxing, they say heavyweight champions once defeated never come back! IBM was for many years counted down for being a staid IT behemoth of former mainframe glory.

Their database technology is rather closed up and not well known outside of Fortune 500 companies or so. Even Oracle database technology is more accessible than that of IBM.

Was NIPS 2018 The Stage For A Comeback
IBM has for some time tried to come out with new innovative chip technologies or promote IBM Watson, but so far it appears these attempts were not exactly business success stories. Not sure, how much the IBM cloud offering is doing compared to its competitors, but it appears Microsoft oder Amazon are doing so much better.

However, at least since 2015 IBM was pushing for better hardware for AI (see e.g. Deep Learning with Limited Numerical Precision, Approximate Computing: Challenges And Opportunities). Certainly, AI needs urgently better and more powerful hardware!

At NIPS 2018, IBM came out showcasing their advances in hardware for AI, taunting Nvidia that GPUs had come to their limits (“post GPU era”):

Are we entering a post von Neumann architecture era? IBM wants us to believe it.

We’ll see what the future holds for phase change memory; in memory computing; analog hardware; 8-bit precision; mixed precision computing etc. Stay tuned for more exciting things to come!

Let’s see how the competition will respond to this latest foray by IBM!

First Disappointment With Linux Fedora 29

Posted: 12/8/2018 Updated: 12/12/2018, 12/9/2018

Update Of 12/12/2018

Suffered now three application crashes by now. Two crashes came from the Files utility, which I find strange that such a standard utility becomes so brittle. The other application crash was caused by an application, which I was not able to identify.

Update Of 12/9/2018

Unfortunately, I was premature and had to change the original blog post title from “In Praise of Linux Fedora 29” to the current title.

As if I had come under a spell since publishing this blog, I noticed those annoying application is not responsive messages again with Fedora 29. And today (12/9/2018), my system crashed all of a sudden with a black screen of death, which I had not seen in a long time.

Original Post

For four long years I suffered from poor memory management with the Fedora (Workstation) operating system. Every few days, responsiveness would become molasses and I had to reboot.

A about a week ago, with apprehensions I dared to upgrade from Fedora 28 to Fedora 29 and to my great surprise, they finally tackled this poor memory management problem much to my satisfaction!
Special appreciation also for the very smooth upgrade process without any glitches or negative surprises so far!

The Free Everything From Government Plague

Posted: 12/7/2018

Trigger

Yesterday, I saw the news (German language) that rich, small Luxembourg is offering now free public transportation to its citizens.

In the U.S. calls for free Medicare for all, free college tuition, free Internet etc. are heard more often.

Similar demands are voiced in other Western democracies.

A Very Contagious And Dangerous Plague

Over history humans got rid of most plagues of the past, but this plague of more free services and goods provided by government persists and spreads. These are signs of serious decadence and a grand delusion! Free everything has become an addiction! Especially, younger people appear to be attracted by this sweet Siren song!

Abundance of material well being; largely freedom from hunger, material suffering and poverty; and long absence of war times in Western societies for the past several decades has laid the the fertile ground for utopian ideas.

This plague has the power to undermine the achievements of Western Civilization. Big Government tyranny is looming if this plague is allowed to spread further. A government that can give a citizen everything, can take everything.

Combine this free everything from government plague with increasing demands for universal, unconditional basic income and you have the perfect combination for decline and doom!

Will the people resist this great temptation of or longing for cornucopia and paradise!

Government Funded German Goethe Institute Spreads Feminism And Other Leftist Propaganda

Posted: 12/6/2018

I am a longtime subscriber to the weekly Goethe Institute e-mail newsletter. For at least 12-24 months, I have been noticing that these newsletters quite often spread hard leftist propaganda in form of articles, events etc.

I am afraid this is unbeknownst to many taxpayers in Germany! If you are not very familiar with this institute check out e.g. the Wikipedia article

I am afraid this leftist ideology and propaganda is thus effectively spread to 159 institute locations worldwide in almost as many  countries.

Today’s (12/6/2018) newsletter was in particular shocking. It contained following items:
  1. ONGOING EXHIBITION | NOV 2018 - FEB 2019 #FeminismToMe INSTAGRAM EXHIBIT: ARE YOU IN?
Our interactive #FeminismToMe Instagram Exhibit is an ongoing project ... Stop by and check out … about ... personal relationship to and thoughts on modern-day feminism … While you’re visiting, be sure to “like” and “comment” on our posts in person …  don't forget to share your own post under the hashtag on Instagram to help the gallery grow!”
  2. “TALK & WORKSHOP | THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 6:00 PM #FeminismToMe: IN IT TO KNIT IT - FIBER ARTS AND FEMINISM The Goethe-Institut Washington and the D.C. Public Library will host a conversation and hands-on workshop that explores the intersections of knitting and feminism – especially in an age of digital media and widespread activism.  ... will discuss the personal and broader power of knitting. All participants will have the opportunity to knit a small item – a pouch or a yarn tag – that can be utilized for the Women’s March on January 19, 2019. Yarn and knitting needles will be provided, ...”

How do you like Johann Wolfgang Goethe wearing a vulva cap (a.k.a. pussy hat)? (This was also included in same newsletter)

Khashoggi Murder: Cui Bono?

Posted: 12/5/2018  Updated: 12/24/2019, 12/14/2018

Update Of 12/24/2019

Saudi Arabia just sentenced five individuals to death and three others to long jail sentences in a closed criminal court trial. The secret trial probably has not met any Western standards, but it may serve some justice in this case and as a warning to future clandestine operations.

“The verdicts came after a trial in Riyadh’s criminal court that lasted nearly a year and was largely shrouded in secrecy, with sessions closed to the general public. … Diplomats from the United States, Turkey and several other countries were allowed to attend but told not to reveal details of the trial. Members of Khashoggi’s family also attended ...”

Update Of 12/14/2018

Just read this interesting article The regional factors bringing Turkey and Iran together from the ASPI (Australian Strategic Policy Institute).

A few salient quotes from the article (emphasis added):
  1. “... In this context, Iran’s relations with Turkey provide a very interesting case study. Both Tehran and Ankara have regional ambitions that have sometimes led to friction between them, as was the case over Syria until recently. However, economic complementarities and congruence of strategic interests have helped to keep their relationship on a relatively even keel. ...”
  2. “When the Trump administration announced that it was going to reimpose sanctions on Iran, Turkey made it clear that it wouldn’t follow American diktats … Economic interdependence provides part of the explanation for the Turkish stand. Bilateral trade between Iran and Turkey isn’t limited to oil and gas. The volume of trade between the two neighbours stood at US$11.7 billion at the end of 2017, up from US$9.7 billion in 2016, and both countries have committed to eventually raising the level to US$30 billion.”
  3. “... Turkish and Iranian strategic interests coincide on Kurdish secessionism, which threatens the territorial integrity of both countries. ...”
  4. “... Iran’s support to Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the time of the failed coup in July 2016 greatly helped in patching up differences. The Iranian foreign minister stayed up all night as the coup was unfolding to monitor the Turkish situation and telephoned his Turkish counterpart five times to express Iran’s support for the government, thus strengthening personal bonds between the leaders of the two countries.”

Original Post

Disclaimer

I am not very familiar with many of the details of this prominent murder case nor with the Khashoggi himself. I did not have the time to do more research.

Very Briefly & Selectively About Jamal Khashoggi

He is reported to be a:
  1. Supposedly, a dissident of the Saudi Arabian monarchy or the new king
  2. A reported supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood and possibly Islamism sympathizer. What else? (Source: 1)
  3. “Khashoggi interviewed bin Laden several times, usually meeting bin Laden in Tora Bora, and once more in Sudan in 1995” (Source: 3). Men with such intimate access to Bin Laden are suspect
  4. He has become an instant cause celebre for the left. This by itself should immediately raise suspicions and concerns of red herring or instrumentalization
  5. He (59 years old at the time) was three times married and divorced and tried to marry a 36 year old woman he had barely known as was reported (Source: 1)

Briefly About The Alleged Assassination

  1. No body was found yet
  2. What evidence do we have that he actually entered and never left the Saudi consulate as alleged?
  3. The Turkish government supports the case of a murder inside the Saudi consulate.
“The bulk of evidence about Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the killing of Mr. Khashoggi has come from leaks by Turkish authorities to pro-government news outlets” (Source: 2: emphasis added)
“The New York Times confirmed that at least nine of the 15 suspects identified by Turkish authorities worked for the Saudi security services, military or other government ministries.” (Source: 2; emphasis added)
So the Turkish government had audio recordings from inside the Saudi consulate? (Source: 3). How did they obtain these recordings?
  4. Why would Saudi Arabia apparently admit that the murder occurred within its consulate?
  5. That the CIA confirmed (see e.g. Source: 4)  that the new Saudi King ordered the assassination is probably baloney! This so called CIA confirmation seems to be based primarily on anonymous sources.

Possibly An Accident In A Botched Abduction Attempt

“Other alleged abduction attempts / Following Jamal Khashoggi's killing and mutilation, several other exiled Saudi activists reported that the Saudi regime attempted to lure them into their embassies.” (Source: 3)

“This week [around November 16th, 2018], the Saudi public prosecutor blamed the operation on a rogue band of operatives who were sent to Istanbul to return Khashoggi to Saudi Arabia, in an operation that veered off course when the journalist “was forcibly restrained and injected with a large amount of a drug resulting in an overdose that led to his death,” according to a report by the prosecutor.” (Source: 4; emphasis added)

Did Khashoggi indeed violently resist his arrest inside the consulate as reported or alleged? If true, could this also have contributed to his possibly accidental death? A situation got out of hand?

May I purely speculate that Mr. Khashoggi was even seeking death inside the Saudi consulate for fame/celebrity and martyrdom? Had he foreknowledge that he would be arrested? Will his surviving relatives benefit financially?

Hopefully, one day we will learn more about the facts & events leading to the disappearance & presumed death of Khashoggi.

If A Murder (Alleged Or Real) Happened: Cui Bono

As so often, the question who benefits the most from such a murder scandal needs to be raised. Let me speculate here for a bit (in no particular order or ranking):
  1. The new Saudi king would have been extremely stupid to be involved in such an assassination right at the start of his reign. Do we really believe he was that stupid? There are many more subtler ways to get rid of or marginalize a dissident etc. Would the new king indeed resort to such a scheme to possibly get rid of internal rivals by blaming them for the murder afterwards? That would be almost a story out of Thousand And One Nights!
  2. Was it a palace intrigue against the new Saudi king? Possible, but not too plausible! Would have any perpetrator be so stupid to jeopardize Saudi Arabia’s international relations in such a blunt fashion amidst hostile tensions with Iran and a ongoing war in Yemen? To risk such high stakes fall out defies credibility!
  3. Israel: Israelis are way too smart to dare such an international affair and it is not in their interest at all. This murder does not fit very well the pattern of past clandestine operations of Israel. Plus, there was a recent, remarkable thawing of relations between Israel & Saudi Arabia with the promise of better relations going forward. This recent, unusual improvement in relations between Israel & Saudi Arabia alone could have been a strong motive for a daring act to undermine this development to keep the Middle East in perpetual turmoil
  4. Russia’s Putin the Terrible: Putin is a high probability contender for having perpetrated this murder. Russia has the most to gain from strains on the U.S.-Saudi relationship and beyond
  5. Iran: Also a very high probability contender. The rivalry or hostility between Iran, U.S. and Saudi Arabia for dominance in the region is legendary
  6. Islamist or other terrorists: Possible, but these murderers were then probably only pawns
  7. North Korea: Using a potent chemical weapon (VX nerve agent) to assassinate on a major airport (Kuala Lumpur International Airport in 2017) a potential rival for the dictatorship would certainly qualify this rogue state. Perhaps, they acted to please Russia and assure Russia’s committed support for the regime?
  8. Turkey: Not sure why the Turkish autocrat Erdogan is probably colluding in the murder. Perhaps, Erdogan is trying to make up with Russia or Iran?
