Sounds scary, right!
Methane is even more a trace gas in the atmosphere than the life essential and harmless CO2! There is an artificial and much exaggerated panic over such trace gases going on!
Since methane is the largest component of natural gas, it is a loss to businesses not to capture it and sell it.
"What’s happening: Methane emissions in the US are worse than scientists previously estimated, a new study has found. The research represents one of the most comprehensive surveys yet of methane emissions from US oil- and gas-producing regions, and found that emissions were significantly higher than previously estimated.
The big picture: The study highlights the urgent need for new and better ways of tracking the powerful greenhouse gas. ..."
"Oil and gas operations across the United States are emitting more than 6 million tons per year of methane, the main component of natural gas and the most abundant greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide, according to Stanford-led research published March 13 in Nature.
These emissions, which result from both intentional vents and unintentional leaks, amount to $1 billion in lost commercial value for energy producers. ...
The new emission and cost estimates are roughly three times the level predicted by the U.S. government. ..."
Methane leaks in the US are worse than we thought A new study reveals more leaks from oil and gas operations, but it’ll take satellites, planes, and more to find all the culprits.
