I just received my print copy of this adopted speech delivered at Hillsdale College on 10/4/2022.
I did not read the whole speech, but the analysis presented seems to suck!
In the beginning, the author makes two points:
- NATO expansion up to the borders of Russia has been seen as a severe threat by Russians (not only Putin the Terrible)
- The claim that the Ukraine was "the most Russian of the non-Russian Soviet Republics. Russian has for a long time been the language of its big cities, of its high culture, and of certain important regions."
Russia, since the Fall of the Soviet Union, failed to build their own kind of NATO! The Warsaw Pact disappeared on the ash heap of history! In principle, every country, including the Ukraine, is free to decide, which military alliance it wants to join!
Whether the Ukraine is the most Russian is a weird, if not absurd argument! Because it is perhaps the most Russian it gives Putin the Terrible carte blanche to wage a brutal war of aggression mostly against the ("most Russian") civilian population of the Ukraine? The history of Ukraine is very mixed to say the least. After the annexation by Catherine the Great e.g. Russification was imposed on the Ukrainian people.
Apparently, it has escaped the author to notice how valiantly and dedicated the Ukrainian population is defending themselves against the Russian invasion! They did not exactly welcome the Russians!
