Annoyances: Websites prompting for cookie acceptance

Almost every time you visit a website for the first time or after you cleared your web browser cache, the website will prompt you about their cookies!

This frequent annoyance has been going on for about two decades now! Most cookies are harmless! It really sucks!

It appears, we have to thank the European Union in their endless paternalistic zeal to protect consumers for requiring user's consent since 2002!

Should protections e.g. not be implemented in the browser or by installing browser extensions etc. etc.? I don't think the Google Chrome browser (my main browser) cookie settings are very helpful. There seems to be a missing option. I definitely, do not want to allow all cookies.
