Amazing stuff! Google does not appear to disclose the transmission speed of the new cable yet.
"... It’s estimated that subsea cables carry 98% of all internet traffic today, and for Google they are vital to to increasing speeds and lowering latency for its billions of consumer and enterprise users globally. ...
Google is bolstering its cloud credentials with a new subsea cable running from the U.S. East Coast to Argentina, with additional touchpoints in Brazil and Uruguay. Firmina, as the cable is called, is the16th submarine cable Google has invested in and the sixth it’s building entirely on its own dime. ..."
"... Firmina will be the longest cable in the world capable of running entirely from a single power source at one end of the cable if its other power source(s) become temporarily unavailable—a resilience boost at a time when reliable connectivity is more important than ever. ..."
In the age of political correctness and racism, Google explained: "The cable is named after Maria Firmina dos Reis (1825 - 1917), a Brazilian abolitionist and author whose 1859 novel, Úrsula, depicted life for Afro-Brazilians under slavery. A mixed-race woman and intellectual, Firmina is considered Brazil’s first novelist."
