She became notorious for accusing her teacher and a painter of raping her and going to trial for it. Perhaps, one of the earliest recorded rape trial where a woman accused a man of rape. The accused was found guilty, but the sentence to be exiled from Rome was not carried out. "At the trial, Artemisia was tortured with thumbscrews with the intention of verifying her testimony."
