Slavery routes – a short history of human trafficking (1/4)

Very recommendable! The word slavery is derived from Slavs! Before the trans Atlantic Slave trade more white people were enslaved than Africans! Slavery was very common throughout history across continents! Arabs/Muslims were very much involved in the African slave trade before the European colonial powers!

One of the first major slave revolts happened in modern Day Iraq around 869-883 AD, the Zanj Rebellion! This rebellion may have involved as many as 500,000 slaves!

Cairo was a major slave trading hub in the 10-13th century or so!
Before the trans Atlantic slave trade there was the trans Saharan slave trade (e.g. Timbuktu)! It is estimated that about 1/3 of the slaves traded across the Sahara perished! An estimated 3.5 million slaves were traded via the trans Saharan slave trade!

One of the famous emperors of West Africa, Mansa Musa (1280-1337 AD) of Mali, a slave trader himself, is reported to have brought 12,000 slaves on his famous pilgrimage to Mecca!
