Sensationalism and false Alarmism in science journalism! The study cited by this science journalistic article appears to be not well done or done too fast!
First of all the article is silent on the question whether this really happens in vivo or whether this phenomenon has also been observed with cold causing coronaviruses or e.g. influenza etc.
"When SARS-CoV-2 virus was added to human heart cells grown in lab dishes, the long muscle fibers that keep hearts beating were diced into short bits, alarming scientists at the San Francisco-based Gladstone Institutes, especially after they saw a similar phenomenon in heart tissue from Covid-19 patients’ autopsies. "
"COVID-19 causes cardiac dysfunction in up to 50% of patients ..."
Exactly what kind of patients? This is a very general statement coming from scientists!
"Infection of human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes with SARS-CoV-2 revealed robust transcriptomic and morphological signatures of damage in cardiomyocytes"
Note that the researchers used iPSC derived cells, not real ones.
‘Carnage’ in a lab dish shows how coronavirus may damage hearts - STAT Maybe we should think of Covid-19 as a heart disease.
Here is the link to the underlying preprint article:
SARS-CoV-2 infection of human iPSC-derived cardiac cells predicts novel cytopathic features in hearts of COVID-19 patients
Caveat: I did not read the entire research paper, only the abstract
