Manipulating neurons with engineered viruses for brain treatments

Amazing stuff!

"Harmless adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) engineered to deliver genes to specific cell types have allowed scientists to manipulate individual neurons in the brain. In a set of eight studies, researchers created more than 1,000 AAVs that home in on neurons in the spinal cord, cortex or striatum — a region deep in the brain that degenerates in Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases. The ability to precisely control neurons’ activity could lead to treatments for neurological conditions. ..."

"This collection includes articles that describe a range of methods to gain access to neuronal and non-neuronal cell types within the central nervous system. By combining technologies such as genetics, virology, genomic enhancers, and RNA sensing, these methods open the door to targeting the nervous system in ways that were previously unimaginable. ..."

Engineered Viruses Make Neurons Glow and Treat Brain Disease "Neuroscientists can now make precise genetic tweaks to the neurons that are most affected by brain diseases such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and ALS"

Engineered viruses can label and control populations of individual neuron types in the mouse brain.
