Deutschland führt im Globalen Lockdown-Ranking - Meister der Maßnahmen

Typisch Bananenrepublik Deutschland im Coronawahn! Hoffe, die massenweise Proteste werden weiter gehen!

Why SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19 is a relatively harmless disease and why the cure was worse than the disease.

Large asteroid heading towards Earth late January 2022

This is a recurring real threat to our planet and life on earth!

The Global Warming hoax and the Climate Change religion not so much! Perhaps, these are just convenient distractions from more important issues! Or they are tools of scaremongering to subject people to more Big Government!

DNA Damage Makes Zebrafish Sleepy

Very recommendable! More evidence how important sleep is for our health! This research suggests that in the near future humans might be able to reduce their need for sleep by using more effective DNA damage repair.

"... By labeling repair proteins in live zebrafish larvae with florescent markers and using real-time imaging, the researchers found that during sleep, the repair proteins are recruited to DNA damage sites in the neurons of the dorsal pallium, the zebrafish equivalent of the brain’s neocortex. “Sleep increased the clustering of repair proteins to the DNA damage and the induced repair became more efficient” than during wakefulness, Appelbaum says. ...
Parp1 detects DNA damage and recruits repair proteins to mend the breaks ... it might act as a sensor to trigger sleep. Indeed, the researchers observed that Parp1 clustering on chromatin in the brain increases during the day and reduces to baseline level by the end of the night. When they increased levels of Parp1 in zebrafish larvae, the larvae slept longer, but when Parp1 was inhibited, the larvae slept for a shorter period of time—though they caught up on lost sleep once the inhibitor was withdrawn. In the larvae treated with the Parp1 inhibitor, more DNA damage accumulated both during the day and the night than in larvae where Parp1 functioned normally. After the drug was withdrawn in the treated embryos and they caught up on sleep, DNA damage returned to normal levels, indicating that Parp1 reduces DNA damage in neurons and that even when DNA is intensely damaged, and larvae without functioning Parp1 don’t sense the need to sleep. ...
The researchers also found that inhibiting Parp1 reduces the length of non-REM sleep in adult mice, indicating that the same mechanism likely connects DNA damage, Parp1, and sleep in these mammals. ...
“They showed that fish sleep is important for DNA repair, [and] they confirm their findings in mouse and showed that Parp1 induced non-REM sleep,” ... adding that the mouse results indicate this mechanism must be present in humans as well. ..."

From the abstract:
"... In flies, zebrafish, mice, and humans, DNA damage levels increase during wakefulness and decrease during sleep. Here, we show that 6h of consolidated sleep is sufficient to reduce DNA damage in the zebrafish dorsal pallium. Induction of DNA damage by neuronal activity and mutagens triggered sleep and DNA repair. The activity of the DNA damage response (DDR) proteins Rad52 and Ku80 increased during sleep, and chromosome dynamics enhanced Rad52 activity. The activity of the DDR initiator poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (Parp1) increased following sleep deprivation. In both larva zebrafish and adult mice, Parp1 promoted sleep. Inhibition of Parp1 activity reduced sleep-dependent chromosome dynamics and repair. These results demonstrate that DNA damage is a homeostatic driver for sleep, and Parp1 pathways can sense this cellular pressure and facilitate sleep and repair activity."

After several decades, are we finally able to clear the body of the HIV virus?

Good news! What took so long?

"... Worldwide, there are currently 38 million people living with HIV, and an estimated 36 million have died of HIV-related diseases in the decades since HIV began circulating, according to UNAIDS. ...
The UCLA-led study continues research on a strategy called “kick and kill,” which many of the same scientists first described in a 2017 paper. The approach coaxes the dormant virus to reveal itself in infected cells, so it can then be targeted and killed. In the earlier study, the researchers gave antiretroviral drugs to mice whose immune systems had been altered to mimic those of humans, and then infected with HIV. They then administered a synthetic compound called SUW133, which was developed at Stanford University, to activate the mice’s dormant HIV. Up to 25% of the previously dormant cells that began expressing HIV died within 24 hours. ...
In the new study, while the mice were receiving antiretrovirals, the researchers used SUW133 to flush HIV infected cells out of hiding. They then injected healthy natural killer cells into the mice’s blood to kill the infected cells. The combination of SUW133 and injections of healthy natural killer immune cells completely cleared the HIV in 40% of the HIV-infected mice. ..."

From the abstract:
"HIV is difficult to eradicate due to the persistence of a long-lived reservoir of latently infected cells. ... Here we show the administration of allogeneic human peripheral blood natural killer cells delays viral rebound following interruption of anti-retroviral therapy in humanized mice infected with HIV-1. Utilizing genetically barcoded virus technology, we show these natural killer cells efficiently reduced viral clones rebounding from latency. Moreover, a kick and kill strategy comprised of the protein kinase C modulator and latency reversing agent SUW133 and allogeneic human peripheral blood natural killer cells during anti-retroviral therapy eliminated the viral reservoir in a subset of mice. Therefore, combinations utilizing latency reversal agents with targeted cellular killing agents may be an effective approach to eradicating the viral reservoir."

Iranian drone attacks on Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia

Some very concerning news! How close are to a potentially serious military confrontation in the region?

It does not help that the 46th President of the U.S. is demented and senile!

"Three people were killed and six were injured after Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement claimed responsibility for an alleged drone attack on the United Arab Emirates that occurred Monday morning, state media reported.
Shortly afterward, the Saudi-led coalition claimed that it had managed to down eight drones launched in the direction of Saudi Arabia.
Three fuel tankers exploded in Abu Dhabi's Musaffah industrial area near storage facilities of oil firm ADNOC and a fire broke out at a storage facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport. ..."

Single-celled marine organism first to be found releasing oxygen in the dark

Amazing stuff! What little we still know about our planet!

"A previously unknown biological pathway allows a widespread type of oceanic archaeon to release both oxygen and nitrogen in the dark – the first time such a phenomenon has been seen in nature in an anoxic environment. The process, whose details are not yet fully understood, could transform scientists’ understanding of the cycle of key nutrients in oceans. Ammonia-oxidising archaea are among the most abundant microbes in the world’s oceans. They obtain energy by using oxygen to oxidise ammonia to nitrite. ..."

From the abstract:
"... Nevertheless, AOA [Ammonia-oxidizing archaea] are abundant in environments where oxygen is undetectable. By carrying out incubations for which oxygen concentrations were resolved to the nanomolar range, we show that after oxygen depletion, Nitrosopumilus maritimus produces dinitrogen and oxygen, which is used for ammonia oxidation. The pathway is not completely resolved but likely has nitric oxide and nitrous oxide as key intermediates. N. maritimus joins a handful of organisms known to produce oxygen in the dark. ..."

Method of the Year: Google AlphaFold protein structure prediction

Google collects accolades for its state of the art artificial intelligence research to the benefit of humanity!

"... A pleasant frisson may have set in more recently as you browsed the new and rapidly growing AlphaFold Protein Structure Database or perused papers about a method called AlphaFold and its application to the entire human proteome, or when you dug into the code that drives this inference engine, with its neural network architecture that yields the 3D structure of proteins from a given amino acid sequence. The team behind AlphaFold is DeepMind Technologies, launched as an AI startup in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman and now part of Alphabet after being acquired by Google in 2014. DeepMind has presented AlphaFold14 and AlphaFold2 and, more recently, AlphaFold-Multimer5 for predicting the structures of known protein complexes. ...
At CASP14 [Critical Assessment of Protein Structure Prediction] in 2020, AlphaFold2 blew away its competitors. The difference between the DeepMind team results and those of the group in second place “was a bit of a shock,” says University College London researcher David Jones. “I’m still processing that a bit, really.” Only some months later, when DeepMind gave a glimpse of its method and shared the code, were scientists able to begin looking under the hood. No new information was used to transition AlphaFold1 to AlphaFold2; there was no “clever trick,” says Jones. The team used what academics had been doing for years but applied it in a more principled way, he says. ...
DeepMind, in collaboration with EBI [European Bioinformatics Institute], is now filling the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database with hundreds of thousands of computationally generated human protein structures and those from many other organisms, including the ‘classic’ research organisms maize, yeast, rat, mouse, fruit fly and zebrafish.
Every day, the PDB sees around 2.5 million downloads of protein coordinates ...
Compared to other software developed in the academic community ... AlphaFold’s advances include more accurate placement of side chains in the protein models and an improved approach to integrating machine learning with homology modeling, which looks at protein structure in the context of evolutionarily related proteins. The software uses homology modeling at an “ultrafine” level ..."

Nature journal ideology: COVID vaccines safely protect pregnant people: the data are in

The prestigious Nature journal makes you cringe again. Out of ideological bias and indoctrination, women are labeled as people. This is disturbing and quite demeaning to women!

In this article, Nature used the term people 22 times and most of the times meaning women! It is quite absurd to read this!
Here is a typical example: "And yet, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only around 40% of pregnant people in the United States had been vaccinated against COVID-19 by 1 January 2022"

In my other recent blog post, I pointed out how Nature journal is committed to the Global Warming hoax and the Climate Change religion!

At the end of the long article Nature journal presents this note:
"Editor’s note: Nature recognizes that transgender men and non-binary people can become pregnant. We occasionally use ‘women’ in this story when discussing studies that used the same language."

How many transgender men have become pregnant so far? How many pregnant transgender men have carried their pregnancy to term?

COVID vaccines safely protect pregnant people: the data are in Despite evidence that pregnant people are at high risk of serious disease, many remain unvaccinated.

Fossils Reveal When Animals Started Making Noise

"... but the fossil record provides a minimum date: a katydid from around 250 million years ago has the sound-producing anatomy characteristic of this group. The earliest-known fossils of cicada relatives also date to this time. These insects can generate exceptionally loud sounds by rapidly buckling and unbuckling drumlike structures on their bodies called tymbals. The sound-production structures are so well preserved in some insect fossils that researchers can reconstruct the songs the creatures sang in life. In 2011 a team led by Jun-Jie Gu, now at Sichuan Agricultural University in China, worked out that a specific ancient katydid emitted songs tuned to a frequency of 6.4 kilohertz ...
Today’s amphibians, reptiles and mammals all possess a larynx, or voice box, near the top of their airway. This fact suggests they inherited it from their last common ancestor, which would mean the larynx is nearly as old as land vertebrates themselves, going back 300 million years or so. It probably took millions of years for truly specialized or powerful vocalizations to evolve in these animals, however. Little is known about these early stages of vertebrate vocalization, not least because the larynx is made up of cartilage, which generally does not preserve well. What we do know is that starting roughly 230 million years ago, during the Mesozoic era, vertebrate animals evolved a wide range of vocal abilities. ...
Among the most acoustically talented animals in the Mesozoic were the dinosaurs. In 1981 ... carried out one of the first reconstructions of a fossil animal’s vocalization, working with the herbivorous, duck-billed dinosaur Parasaurolophus. ...
Since 2008 ... team have been using CT scans, along with fluid mechanics modeling, to assess sound production in various dinosaur species. They have discovered that the skulls of many dinosaurs contained complex chambers. Air flow through these spaces would have been correspondingly convoluted. The air flow helped to regulate body temperature, but it also might have enabled the animals to produce a wide array of sounds, including honks, bellows and trumpets. ...
Scientists do not yet have a firm grasp on the origins of the syrinx. The oldest avian syrinx discovered to date comes from a specimen of the extinct bird Vegavis, described in 2016 by Clarke and her colleagues. Vegavis lived during the latest part of the Cretaceous period, 66 million to 69 million years ago. But its syrinx was already fairly specialized, with its expanded resonating space and asymmetry associated with dual-sided sound production."

What’s next for lab-grown human embryos?

Recommendable! The 14-day rule dates back to 1979, an eternity in terms of far we have come since then. Why is it so controversial to grow a human embryo in the laboratory? Do the benefits of studying early human development not far outweigh the risks?

Fears of Frankenstein etc. are probably overblown!

Foolish countries like Germany (otherwise known for its ridiculous commitment to the Climate Change religion and the sudden abandoning of nuclear power) prohibit human embryo research entirely.

"... In May, the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) released new guidelines1 that relaxed the 14-day rule, taking away the hard barrier. Although only a few labs around the world have perfected the techniques needed to culture human embryos up to day 14, the science is advancing rapidly. The relaxed rule allows lab groups, in countries where it is legal, to apply to the regulators for permission to continue research past 14 days. Such studies could reveal what happens during human development after the embryo would normally have implanted in the uterus, about a week after fertilization. It then goes through a stage called gastrulation, roughly between days 14 and 22, when the body’s main pattern emerges and the foundations are laid for organ generation. ...
The 14-day rule was first proposed in 1979, as IVF technology emerged and human embryos existed for the first time outside the body — although the longest they could survive at the time was a few days. By 2006, when the ISSCR issued its first set of guidelines for human embryonic stem cells (ES cells), the 14-day rule was firmly established in the research community. ...
In several countries, including Germany and Austria, it is illegal to do any research on human embryos, and many others impose a 14-day limit by law, such as the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Australia and Canada. In a few places, including the United States and Israel, there are guidelines but no law prohibiting or limiting human embryo research, although it cannot be federally funded in the United States. ...
Researchers working with animal embryos have already cultured them beyond the developmental equivalent of 14 days, which could pave the way for similar advances in human embryo culture. In March, Jacob Hanna’s group at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, doubled the time that mouse embryos can be cultured in the laboratory, from day 5.5 to day 11 (roughly equivalent to human days 13 to 30). ..."

Two decades of soldiers’ medical records implicate common Epstein-Barr virus in multiple sclerosis

Good news! And what a massive hunt for clues!

"... Now, a study that combed data from regular blood tests of 10 million U.S. soldiers has found the strongest evidence yet that infection with a common virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), dramatically increases a person’s chances of developing the rare disease. ...
A combination of genetics—the disease often runs in families—and environmental triggers such as viruses is the likely cause. EBV, a herpesvirus that infects most people by adolescence and then lies latent in B cells throughout life, has long been a prime suspect. ..."

"... There is no treatment or prophylactic for EBV, although Moderna is developing an mRNA vaccine for EBV using the same technology employed for their COVID serums. Earlier this year, Moderna started trials for this EBV vaccine with human volunteers. ...
Individuals who contracted EBV later in life and reported infectious mononucleosis are much more likely to develop MS in their lifetime compared to the majority of people who are first infected with EBV in the first few years of life. Furthermore, MS patients who have undergone cell depletion therapies have seen their symptoms improve. These are the same cells that the Epstein-Barr virus latently infects, strengthening the link between the virus and MS. ..."

From the abstract:
"Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system of unknown etiology. We tested the hypothesis that MS is caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in a cohort comprising more than 10 million young adults on active duty in the US military, 955 of whom were diagnosed with MS during their period of service. Risk of MS increased 32-fold after infection with EBV but was not increased after infection with other viruses, including the similarly transmitted cytomegalovirus. Serum levels of neurofilament light chain, a biomarker of neuroaxonal degeneration, increased only after EBV seroconversion. These findings cannot be explained by any known risk factor for MS and suggest EBV as the leading cause of MS."

Why Is Health Care So Expensive in the U.S.?

Very recommendable! Thanks to way too much government interventions! In other Western countries, the situation is very similar!

Here are some examples:
"... There is not a single answer, but health care economists assign much of the blame to the “original sin” of health care policy: the preferred tax treatment for employer-sponsored insurance (ESI) premiums. ...
First, it makes employers and employers less sensitive to increases in their ESI premiums. That is because a dollar increase in premiums doesn’t reduce one’s after-tax income by a full dollar. ... It weakens the ability of competition among providers to keep prices low. ... Why should doctors or hospitals compete vigorously when they know that their high prices can be passed on by insurers without much pushback? ... the tax exemption reduced 2020 federal tax revenues by $250 billion in 2020. Much of that tax savings went to high-income tax filers. The reason: high-income filers have higher tax rates and buy more expensive plans. ...
In the case of health care, we find a lack of competition among medical providers, hospitals, and insurance companies. ... State certificate-of-need (CON) laws, for example, require government permission before someone may build a new hospital or expand operations. Lawmakers hoped these rules would slow cost growth by stopping unnecessary hospital construction. But the result was the opposite; existing hospitals used CON laws to stop competitors from entering the market, driving up prices. ...
Strict medical licensing rules also prevent much-needed competition. While these rules are ostensibly written to protect patients, existing providers often use these rules to keep qualified competitors out. ..."

Scientists image atoms with record resolution close to absolute physical limits

Impressive!

"... The researchers ... devised an electron microscope pixel array detector and state-of-the-art 3D reconstruction algorithms to take laser-precise images of atoms. The resolution is so sharp that the only blurred element is the thermal jiggling of the atoms themselves. ..."

From the research article:
"Two major problems that limit the resolution and interpretation of electron microscopy images are lens aberrations and multiple scattering. Chen et al. overcame these issues with ptychography, a technique that uses coherent scattering and multiple overlapping illumination spots to reconstruct an image from far-field diffraction patterns. This method works at a resolution that is limited, not by optics, but rather by the scattering strength of the sample, so it can work better with thicker samples. The authors achieved ultimate lateral resolution better than the thermal vibration of atoms in a PrScO3 sample and showed that it is theoretically possible to identify single dopant atoms.
Transmission electron microscopes use electrons with wavelengths of a few picometers, potentially capable of imaging individual atoms in solids at a resolution ultimately set by the intrinsic size of an atom. However, owing to lens aberrations and multiple scattering of electrons in the sample, the image resolution is reduced by a factor of 3 to 10. By inversely solving the multiple scattering problem and overcoming the electron-probe aberrations using electron ptychography, we demonstrate an instrumental blurring of less than 20 picometers and a linear phase response in thick samples. The measured widths of atomic columns are limited by thermal fluctuations of the atoms. Our method is also capable of locating embedded atomic dopant atoms in all three dimensions with subnanometer precision from only a single projection measurement."

Scientists image atoms with record resolution close to absolute physical limits The resolution is so fine-tuned, the only blurred thing in the image is the thermal jiggling of the atoms themselves.

When Defects strengthen 3D-printed material

If you can't beat it join it or so the saying goes!

"... researchers found a counterintuitive way of improving 3D-printed metal alloys. By deliberately introducing more defects into the printing process, followed by a post-processing treatment that uses high temperature and high pressure to change the material’s microstructure, they turned the defects into assets, resulting in a stronger, more ductile metal product.
The technique could potentially be applied to any 3D-printed metal alloy and could be particularly effective for manufacturing products for biomedical and aerospace industries. ...
So we asked ourselves: What if we try to use those defects that are generally considered a limitation for additive manufacturing and turned them into the strengths of additive manufacturing? ..."

From the abstract:

Virginia Giuffre and the Statute of Limitations for sex crimes

Claims of sexual harassment, other sex crimes, or rape are often very difficult to prove in the court of law especially if the incident dates back years.

What are actually the statute of limitations for such claims. I have only cursory followed the allegations against Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, but it appears in such high profile cases and others the statutes of limitations have no limitations. I noticed this again and again. We are told, we have to believe these females claiming to be victims of sex crimes..

Most of Ms. Giuffre's claims were filed many years after the alleged incidents occurred.

Today, I read most of the Wikipedia entry for Virginia Giuffre (born 1983). She is married since 2002, so I presume all her sexual trafficking and related sex crime crime claims date back to before her marriage. She was reportedly associated with Mr. Eppstein between 2000-2002.

Her life and deeds suggest that she is in some ways dubious. E.g. was she really so innocent or did she seek if not exploit these environments? E.g. was she perhaps a recruiter? Is she an opportunist?

We learn following surprising things about her from Wikipedia:

  1. She is an activist for female victims of sex crimes
  2. She signed at least one very lucrative non disclosure agreement
  3. She "from the age of seven, was molested by a close family friend"
  4. She went from "an abusive situation, to being a runaway, to living in foster homes"
  5. "She lived on the streets at age 13 before getting abused by a 65-year-old sex trafficker, Ron Eppinger, in Miami. Giuffre lived with Eppinger for approximately 6 months." She did not run away this time.
  6. "In March 2005, while Giuffre was still establishing her family in Australia, the Palm Beach Police Department began investigating Epstein after a 14-year-old girl and her parents reported his behavior.  The girl described being recruited by a female classmate from her high school to give Epstein a massage at his mansion in exchange for money, wherein he subsequently molested her"
Will Ms. Giuffre come out with sex crime allegations against Donald Trump next after Alan Dershowitz  and Prince Andrew? I would not be surprised: "Her father worked as a maintenance manager at the Mar-a-Lago property owned by Donald Trump, and also helped Giuffre obtain a job there.", "In the summer of 2000, Giuffre first met Ghislaine Maxwell when working as a spa attendant at Donald Trump's private Mar-a-Lago club while reading a book about massage therapy."

P.S. I do little doubt that Ms. Giuffre is probably a troubled woman and needs help and treatment.

How the Food & Drug Administration Can Reduce Animal Testing

Federal bureaucracies are like molasses or worse! Members of the U.S. Congress are not much better! The issue addressed in this article has been known for several decades!

"... If the FDA prioritizes science, health, and ethics over political considerations, it should support the development of sophisticated in vitro and computational approaches to curtail animal testing ...
The number of annually required animal tests is staggering. Over 110 million mice and rats are killed every year in the name of science in the U.S., as are other animals, including monkeys, rabbits, pigs, guinea pigs, cats, and dogs.

And the benefits are not always apparent. When the KHA [Kefauver–Harris Amendments (KHA) to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act] was passed [in 1962], it was the scientific standard of its time. Sixty years later, scientists have learned that the results of animal tests are not necessarily useful or predictive in humans. Approximately 90 percent of early-phase clinical trials fail after extensive animal testing has already been conducted. Despite this, the FDA requires animal tests to be performed for almost every IND [Investigational New Drug] it reviews, regardless of utility. ...
Animal tests are often unnecessary. Aside from the many animal species and breeds involved, the variety of metabolic pathways and drug metabolites in animals leads to variation in efficacy, toxicity, disease latency, and dosing schedules. Often, the results are only loosely relevant to human beings. For example: isotretinoin, also known as Accutane, causes birth defects in rabbits, monkeys, and humans, but not in mice or rats. ..."

Dolphins also copulate throughout the year, largely to establish and maintain social bonds. In dolphins, the clitoris is positioned in the anterior aspect of the vaginal entrance, where physical contact and stimulation during copulation is likely. Clitoral stimulation seems to be important during female–female sexual interactions in common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), which rub each other’s clitorises using snouts, flippers, or flukes. Determining a sexual pleasure response in animals not amenable to neurobehavioral examination is difficult, but investigation of the clitoris may elucidate evidence of functionality. In this study, we assessed macro- and micromorphological features of the clitoris in common bottlenose dolphins to examine functional features, including erectile bodies with lacunae, extensible collagen and/or elastin fibers, and the presence and location of sensory nerves. Our observations suggest the clitoris of dolphins has well-developed erectile spaces, is highly sensitive to tactile stimulation, and is likely functional."

Deterrence by Uncertainty: A New Defense Posture for Taiwan

Always remember David and Goliath! Taiwan may attack the Three Gorges Dam (or other critical infrastructure) and/or Chinese population centers, if the Communist Party of China intends to invade Taiwan.

Taiwan may also destroy e.g. its TSMC plants and so on.

"... Ultimately, these disagreements and factors all boil down to one overarching question: What most scares the Chinese Communist Party?  ...
The two classic Western approaches to deterrence are deterrence by denial and deterrence by punishment. The deterrence by denial strategy “seeks to deter an action by denying a potential aggressor confidence in attaining its objectives.” Broadly speaking, Western advocates for a Taiwan asymmetric “porcupine strategy” adhere to this method for deterrence, under the logic that increasing Taiwanese operational lethality and survivability will: (1) raise the perceived costs on the PLA of a potential invasion; and (2) provide time for the United States to intervene and tip the balance of power in Taiwan’s favor.

Alternatively, the focus of deterrence by punishment “is not the direct defense of the contested commitment but rather threats of wider punishment that would raise the cost of an attack.” Taiwan’s interest in acquiring long-range, “deep strike” platforms is a reflection of this, as a less extreme version of the 2004-era “whisper” campaign (one occasionally revived since) of Taiwanese contingency planning for a strike on China’s Three Gorges Dam (三峽大壩). The logic here is that threatening the CCP with strikes on major targets beyond the immediate battlefield would: (1) raise the threat to senior Party members’ personal safety; (2) threaten vast disruption in the Chinese domestic economy; and (3) increase the risk of social unrest and the long-term economic costs from the effects of war, even in the case of an operationally successful Taiwan campaign. ..."

No more annual flu shot? Researchers find new target for universal influenza vaccine

Oh this is such a disappointing good news! I have been getting my annual flu shots for over 20 years now! How will my well trained immune system respond to that?

"... In a typical year, influenza affects more than 20 million people in the United States and leads to more than 20,000 deaths. ...
Many of the antibodies present in the blood of participants were antibodies already known to recognize either the HA head or stalk. But a collection of new antibodies stood out; the antibodies bound to the very bottom of the stalk, near where each HA molecule is attached to the membrane of the flu virion. ..."

From the abstract:
"Seasonal influenza viruses constantly change through antigenic drift and the emergence of pandemic influenza viruses through antigenic shift is unpredictable. Conventional influenza virus vaccines induce strain-specific neutralizing antibodies against the variable immunodominant globular head domain of the viral hemagglutinin protein. This necessitates frequent re-formulation of vaccines and handicaps pandemic preparedness. ... Vaccination was found to be safe and induced a broad, strong, durable and functional immune response targeting the conserved, immunosubdominant stalk of the hemagglutinin. The results suggest that chimeric hemagglutinins have the potential to be developed as universal vaccines that protect broadly against influenza viruses."

China is running out of fresh, clean water and that’s scary for Asia

A very serious concern! Perhaps China is after all only a paper tiger run by a communist dictator for life!

"... The same goes for China’s rise. Capitalist reforms, a welcoming global trade system and good demographics all contributed to Beijing’s world-beating economic growth from the late 1970s to the early 2000s. The fact that China was nearly self-sufficient in land, water and many raw materials — and that its cheap labor allowed it to exploit these resources aggressively — also helped it to become the workshop of the world.

Yet China’s natural abundance is a thing of the past. ... Beijing has blown through many of its resources. A decade ago, China became the world’s largest importer of agricultural goods. Its arable land has been shrinking due to degradation and overuse. Breakneck development has also made China the world’s largest energy importer: It buys three-quarters of its oil abroad at a time when America has become a net energy exporter.

China’s water situation is particularly grim. ... China possesses 20% of the world’s population but only 7% of its fresh water. Entire regions, especially in the north, suffer from water scarcity worse than that found in a parched Middle East.

Thousands of rivers have disappeared, while industrialization and pollution have spoiled much of the water that remains. By some estimates, 80% to 90% of China’s groundwater and half of its river water is too dirty to drink; more than half of its groundwater and one-quarter of its river water cannot even be used for industry or farming. ...
Much of China’s fresh water is concentrated in areas, such as Tibet, that the communist government seized by force after taking power in 1949. For years, China has tried to solve its resource challenges by coercing and impoverishing its neighbors.

By building a series of giant dams on the Mekong River, Beijing has triggered recurring droughts and devastating floods in Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand and Laos that depend on that waterway. The diversion of rivers in Xinjiang has had devastating downstream effects in Central Asia.

A growing source of tension in the Himalayas is China’s plan to dam key waters before they reach India, leaving that country (and Bangladesh) the losers. ..."

Matricelf treats pig's spinal cord injury with human implants

Xenotransplantation in both directions at about the same time!

"Israeli biotech company Matricelf (TASE: MTLF) today reported that it has successfully completed another usability trial with human implants for replacing the injured spinal cord of a living pig. The company is developing autologous (bone marrow) implants for the regeneration of damaged tissues by using stem cells and external stem cell components from the patients themselves.

Conducting the trial in the live pig simulates the anticipated surgical procedure in humans, both in terms of the flow of brain and spinal fluids (cerebrospinal fluid - CSF) and in terms of the bleeding that might be created near the site of the injury. During the trial, the company was successful in positioning, by two neurosurgeons, human implants (that is to say neural implants originating from human tissues) developed by the company, in the injured spinal cord of the living pig. After the placement of the implants in the area of the injury, a substitute Dura Patch was grafted into the injured spinal cord, as is done with humans, the membranes surrounding the spinal cord were sutured back together, and the trial was completed with major success. ..."

"Montagsspaziergänge": Weit über 100.000 demonstrieren in ganz Deutschland gegen Corona-Maßnahmen

Bravo!

Link between inflammation and autism

Good news!

"... Infections during pregnancy can lead to high levels of the inflammatory signaling molecule interleukin-17a (IL-17a), which can not only affect brain development in the fetus, but also alter the maternal microbiome in a way that primes the newborn’s immune system for future inflammatory attacks. ...
“We’ve shown that IL-17a acting on the fetal brain can induce autism-like behavioral phenotypes such as social deficits,” ... “Now we are showing that the same IL-17a in mothers, through changes in the microbiome community, produces comorbid symptoms in the offspring, specifically a primed immune system.”"

From the abstract:
"Children with autism spectrum disorders often display dysregulated immune responses and related gastrointestinal symptoms. ... Here, we show that mouse offspring exhibiting autism-like phenotypes due to prenatal exposure to maternal inflammation were more susceptible to developing intestinal inflammation following challenges later in life. In contrast to its prenatal role in neurodevelopmental phenotypes, interleukin-17A (IL-17A) generated immune-primed phenotypes in offspring through changes in the maternal gut microbiota that led to postnatal alterations in the chromatin landscape of naive CD4+ T cells. ... Our study provides mechanistic insights into why children exposed to heightened inflammation in the womb might have an increased risk of developing inflammatory diseases in addition to neurodevelopmental disorders."

Tucker Carlson: Race based healthcare under the 46th President

Very shocking! This racist healthcare policy under the 46th President ought to be an impeachable offense!

What do Rochelle Walensky and Kamala Harris have in common?

I am afraid a lot! There almost seems to be a pattern or parallels!

Both probably got their latest job (CDC Director, U.S. Vice President), because they are women and only women were considered or given preference for these jobs! They are both members of the Dimocratic Party!

Both women look conflicted and their job competence is in question! Dr. Walensky is primarily an HIV/AIDS specialist. Mistress Kamala Harris made her political career expressing her feminine qualities! Ms. Harris skin color was also a (racist) factor.

The intention to rapidly promote women to highest posts no matter what is disastrous! To be the first woman is not a goal that makes much sense!

How an oyster builds a perfectly round pearl

These are some head spinning news or do not cast pearls before swine! (just kidding)
You never look again at a beautiful pearl the same way next time!

"The analysis revealed that fluctuations in the thicknesses of the pearls’ layers of nacre exhibit a phenomenon called 1/f noise, or pink noise ... the formation of nacre layers of different thicknesses may appear random, but is actually dependent on the thickness of previous layers. ...  These phenomena “belong to a universal class of behavior and physics,” ..."

From the abstract:
"... We find that mollusks strike a balance between preserving translational symmetry and minimizing thickness variation of layers by creating a paracrystal with medium-range order. Self-correcting growth processes allow pearls to quickly attenuate disorder, accommodate topological defects in tablet structure, and maintain order throughout a fluctuating external environment. ...
Self-correcting growth mechanisms actively remedy disorder and topological defects of the tablets and act as a countervailing process to long-range disorder. ..."

Scientists ID Dozens of Plants, Animals from airborne environmental DNA

Amazing stuff!

"or a little more than a decade, scientists have been filtering water samples from aquariums, rivers, lakes, and even the ocean to obtain DNA that was shed by fish and other aquatic life. The goal: to use this environmental DNA (eDNA) to monitor aquatic species. Now, a trio of papers—two on animals, and one on plants—suggest it’s also possible to detect and identify terrestrial organisms using eDNA floating in the air. ...
Meanwhile, research on airborne plant eDNA is a few steps ahead, giving animal researchers hints as to what they might attempt next. Last month ... reported in BMC Ecology and Evolution the results of a study in which they sequenced eDNA from dust traps, which passively collect pollen as well as any other airborne molecules, in a field owned by the university. The team found several species of grass, fungi, and even an invasive species called tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) that had all been overlooked by more conventional surveys. ..."

Cystic Fibrosis Drugs Can Be ‘Life-Changing’ For Patients. New Images Reveal How These Molecules Work

Good news! Sometimes it takes a decade more more to figure out exactly how a new medication works.

"Just over a decade ago, in one of the great advances in modern medicine, researchers at Aurora Biosciences and then Vertex Pharmaceuticals found what they described at the time as needles in a haystack – small molecule drugs that can treat cystic fibrosis, the lung-damaging genetic disease. ...
a technical breakthrough in 2014, cryogenic electron microscopy. By freezing samples of proteins under study, cryo-EM allowed detailed electron microscope pictures of protein structure and started what has been dubbed the “resolution revolution.” ...
By taking thousands of electron microscope pictures, the scientists showed that CFTR has an unexpected cavity in its 3D structure. These corrector drugs nestle precisely in that hole, stabilizing the protein and ensuring that it folds into the right shape. “It is surprising until you actually see it, because there are no other examples in the literature of how small molecules can help protein folding,”"

The Battle Of Shanghai: The First Conflict Of WW2 | Shanghai: 1937

Very recommendable with some corrections! This was not the first conflict of WW II as this documentary repeatedly claims. There was the e.g. Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. This civil war was an international conflict with many countries involved (and famous individuals like Ernest Hemingway). It was also an early conflict e.g. between communism and fascism and much more.

What was curious to learn in this video is that supposedly the Chinese nationalist military leader Chiang Kai-shek was wobbly in his decision making. This was repeated several times during the video.

Victor Davis Hanson: Why Our Universities Have Failed

Recommendable! VDH surely writes a lot of articles! However, this one is one of his better ones summarizing the situation quite well going back several decades in  history!

"... Nothing historically has proven more dangerous to a society than millions of half-educated college students and graduates, indebted, either idle, underemployed, or poorly remunerated, full of pride in their largely suspect majors, and bitter that the supposedly less educated and not as sophisticated cohorts are deservedly making more than they. Their educations ensured that they are glib, but not necessarily industrious. An unemployed sociology graduate, up to his neck in debt, without a good job is a volatile citizen—once he grasps too late in his late 20s that he is no better educated than a plumber or electrician, and far less compensated. Mutatis mutandis, these profiles were the wannabe mid-echelon of the French and Bolshevik Revolutions. ..."

An ultra detailed map of the brain region that controls movement, from mice to monkeys to humans

Amazing stuff! Mapping the brain in great detail! What an Herculean effort!

"... The massive BRAIN Initiative-funded collaboration involved dozens of research teams around the country who worked together to complete a cell-by-cell atlas of the primary motor cortex, a part of the mammalian brain that controls movement. Combining more than a dozen different techniques to define brain “cell types” across three different species of mammals, the resulting open-access data collection is by far the most comprehensive and detailed map of any part of the mammalian brain ever released. The researchers classified the millions of neurons and other kinds of brain cells present in the motor cortex into many different cell-type categories — the actual number of different brain cell types in this region depends on how they are being measured, but ranges from several dozen to more than 100. ..."

Nature journal: How researchers can help fight climate change in 2022 and beyond

Again, the famous and once respected Nature journal has editorialized the Global Warming hoax and Climate Change religion propaganda and demagoguery! Some of the language used is preposterous (see below)!

When science becomes politicized it is not science anymore! The history of science is littered with obsolete and sometimes even crazy theories. One day this Global Warming hoax and Climate Change religion will go down as such as well!

China is mentioned only once, rather positively and very briefly in this lengthy editorial! That tells you all how the Nature editorial writers are trying to fool you and how the kowtow to China! Are they on the payroll of the Communist Party of China? Perhaps, mentally if not in reality!

How about the new science of climate attribution specifically mentioned in this editorial? This is not better than medieval superstition at best if not quackery!

"... Science is already baked into the UN’s formal climate agenda for 2022. ...
a month later, the panel is set to provide an analysis of the options for curbing emissions and halting global warming ...
But if green energy is to push out fossil fuels and fulfil the rising demand for reliable power in low-income countries, scientists and engineers will be needed to solve a range of problems. These include ... to address technical challenges that arise when integrating massive amounts of intermittent renewable energy. ...
More innovation will also be needed — for example, in the form of technologies that can pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. These have yet to be tested and demonstrated at any significant scale. ...
Governments and funders also need to support scientists in efforts to understand the safety and efficacy of various controversial geoengineering technologies — methods for artificially cooling the planet, such as the addition of particles to the stratosphere to reflect sunlight back into space ...
And China, currently the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, is creating a vast research infrastructure focused on technologies that will help to eliminate carbon emissions. ...
In addition to enabling green innovation, scientists have an important part to play in evaluating climate policies and tracking commitments made by governments and businesses. ...
From floods in Germany to fires in Australia, the evolving field of climate attribution has already made it clear that global warming is partly to blame for numerous tragedies. Attribution science will also feed into an ongoing geopolitical debate about who should pay for the rising costs of climate-related natural disasters, as many low-income countries seek compensation from wealthy countries that are responsible for the bulk of the greenhouse-gas emissions so far. ..."
