Virginia Judge holds hospital in contempt of court for refusing ivermectin to COVID patient on ventilator, ignoring court order

What is the medieval demonization of ivermectin all about? It is one of those many strange and disturbing phenomena that have come up during the Covid-19 pandemic! Government paternalism and the occasional arrogance of the medical profession are on display here! What a horror story!

The U.S. government on their MedlinePlus.gov website even falsely claims in their drug information sheet that this drug is for animals only (see here). Quite preposterous!

Apparently, ivermection is a fairly harmless drug so why not give it to patients if they desire and if there are no severe contra indications. It may potentially even trigger a positive placebo effect in the treated patient.

" Virginia hospital was held in contempt of court Monday after refusing to administer ivermectin to a woman who has been battling COVID-19 since early October. ...
Kathleen Davies, a 63-year-old northern Virginia woman, became severely ill with COVID in October, and she has been on a ventilator since Nov. 3. Davies was prescribed ivermectin by her family doctor, but she could not complete her regime upon being admitted to the Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton. That's because the northern Virginia hospital refused to administer the drug, "citing medical, legal and practical concerns," ...
Davies' son, Christopher — who works at the hospital as a radiologist technician — urged the hospital to administer the drug as his mother's health declined and all other medical treatments had been exhausted. But the hospital continued to refuse.  So on Dec. 6, the Davies family took legal action to compel Fauquier Hospital to administer ivermectin. Just one day later, Loudoun County Circuit Court Judge Jim Fisher agreed with the Davies family and ordered the hospital to administer the drug in compliance with the family's wishes. Shockingly, the hospital ignored the order. ..."

The Nepalese Buddhist nuns practicing a forbidden ancient skill Kung Fu

Very recommendable! On my visits to China, I have occasionally met Buddhist nuns. It was a pleasure and honor.

General public schooling of children Was for the Industrial Era, individual self-directed learning Is for the Future

Recommendable! The problem of outdated school systems for children has long been recognized for decades, but only with the digital age better and cheaper alternatives are now available!

Given that we are now in the digital age and all the online available education resources, our current public K-12 public schools are outdated! The education of our children will certainly change! Less indoctrination and more education and learning abilities!

"Our current compulsory schooling model was created at the dawn of the Industrial Age. As factories replaced farm work and production moved swiftly outside of homes and into the larger marketplace, 19th century American schooling mirrored the factories that most students would ultimately join. ...
By many accounts, mass schooling has become even more restrictive than it was a century ago, consuming more of childhood and adolescence than at any time in our history. The first compulsory schooling statute, passed in Massachusetts in 1852, required eight to 14-year-olds to attend school a mere 12 weeks a year, six of which were to be consecutive. ...
Enclosing children in increasingly restrictive schooling environments for most of their formative years, and drilling them with a standardized, test-driven curriculum is woefully inadequate for the [future]. ...
While the past belonged to assembly line workers, the future belongs to creative thinkers, experimental doers, and inventive makers. The past relied on passivity; the future will be built on passion. ...
This could help explain why the unschooling, or Self-Directed Education, movement is taking off, with more parents migrating from a schooling model of education for their children to a learning one. With Self-Directed Education, passion is at the center of all learning. Young people follow their interests and pursue their passions, while adults act as facilitators, connecting children and teens to the vast resources of both real and digital communities. In this model, learning is natural, non-coercive, and designed to be directed by the individual herself, rather than by someone else. ..."

Scientists getting closer to diagnosing CTE in living people using MRI

Good news! Maybe Muhammad Ali (a.k.a. Cassius Clay) may have suffered from CTE, but I speculate. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's, but CTE could not be diagnosed back then.

".... A debilitating brain disease caused by repeated head trauma can only be diagnosed once it’s too late and a person is dead — but researchers at Boston University are getting closer to making a diagnosis while patients are still alive ... The researchers found that the men with CTE had shrinkage in regions of the brain such as the frontal lobe, temporal lobe and other structures such as the hippocampus which has a major role in learning and memory. ... it’s the best study yet that shows an MRI could be used to find evidence of CTE.

Florida Governor DeSantis Proposes in Budget to Relocate Illegal Immigrants to other states, Washington DC

You got to love this Governor from Florida! He is possibly a serious presidential contender in 2024!

This has been repeated in the news for for some time now, but it appears he means it! However, the language of his budget proposal does not explicitly include the names of the two locations (Delaware, Martha's Vineyard)!

"Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis set $8 million in his 2022–23 budget to transport illegal immigrants out of The Sunshine State.

He proposed the spending in the Freedom First Budget (pdf) to protect against harms resulting from illegal immigration. The spending may include the transportation of unauthorized aliens located within Florida to other states or the District of Columbia.

“In yesterday’s budget, I put in $8 million for us to be able to transport people illegally [in the United States] out of the state of Florida,” he said during a press conference on Friday.

The Republican governor listed Delaware, President Joe Biden’s hometown state, and Martha’s Vineyard, where former President Barack Obama owns a mansion, as potential destinations to relocate the illegal immigrants."

From his budget proposal:

Gallup Poll: 38% of American adults view Socialism positively

Apparently Gallup conducts this poll on the U.S. economy every year since 2010.

Sponge cells hint at origins of nervous system

Amazing stuff! Much more research is needed. Whether these investigated cells actually communicate by chemical or electrical signals is still an open question.

"Sponges are simple creatures, yet they are expert filter feeders, straining tens of thousands of litres of water through their bodies every day to collect their food. Their mastery of this complex behaviour is all the more remarkable because they have no brain, nor even a single neuron to their name. ...
that sponges use an intricate cell communication system to regulate their feeding and to potentially weed out invading bacteria ...
Previous research has found that sponges possess genes encoding proteins that typically help synapses to function, despite the animals’ lack of neurons. ...
To discover which cells were expressing these genes, [researchers] sequenced the RNA in various individual cells from a freshwater sponge (Spongilla lacustris).
They found that the sponge has 18 distinct cell types. Synaptic genes were active in a few of these types, which were clustered around the sponges’ digestive chambers. This suggests that some form of cellular communication might coordinate the animal’s filter-feeding behaviour. ...
The researchers then used X-ray imaging and electron microscopy to study one of these cell types, which they called secretory neuroid cells. The scans revealed that neuroids send out long arms to reach choanocytes, a type of cell with hair-like protrusions that drive sponges’ water-flow systems and capture most of their food. ...
On the basis of the proximity of the two cell types and the expression of genes that might allow for the secretion of chemicals, the researchers think that these arms enable neuroids to communicate with choanocytes, so that they can pause the water-flow system and clear out any debris or foreign microbes. However, these neuroid cells are not nerves, and there is no sign of the synapses that enable neurons to communicate so quickly. Instead, this cell type might represent an evolutionary precursor to a true nervous system ..."

"... Surveying the cell types in the freshwater sponge Spongilla lacustris, Musser et al. found that many genes important in synaptic communication are expressed in cells of the small digestive chambers. They found secretory machinery characteristic of the presynapse in small multipolar cells contacting all other cells and also the receptive apparatus of the postsynapse in the choanocytes that generate water flow and digest microbial food. These results suggest that the first directed communication in animals may have evolved to regulate feeding, serving as a starting point on the long path toward nervous system evolution. ..."

Gogle AI predicts complex chemical systems

Recommendable! Once more Google is pushing the boundaries of our knowledge!

"A team led by scientists at the London-based artificial-intelligence company DeepMind has developed a machine-learning model that suggests a molecule’s characteristics by predicting the distribution of electrons within it. The approach, described in the 10 December issue of Science1, can calculate the properties of some molecules more accurately than existing techniques. ...
The DeepMind team has made probably the most ambitious attempt yet to deploy AI to calculate electron density, the end result of DFT calculations. “It’s sort of the ideal problem for machine learning: you know the answer, but not the formula you want to apply,” ... The team trained an artificial neural network on data from 1,161 accurate solutions derived from the Schrödinger equations. To improve accuracy, they also hard-wired some of the known laws of physics into the network. They then tested the trained system on a set of molecules that are often used as a benchmark for DFT, and the results were impressive ... “This is the best the community has managed to come up with, and they beat it by a margin,” ..."

From the abstract:
"... The resulting functional, DM21 (DeepMind 21), correctly describes typical examples of artificial charge delocalization and strong correlation and performs better than traditional functionals on thorough benchmarks for main-group atoms and molecules. DM21 accurately models complex systems such as hydrogen chains, charged DNA base pairs, and diradical transition states. More crucially for the field, because our methodology relies on data and constraints, which are continually improving, it represents a viable pathway toward the exact universal functional."

Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin promises To Withdraw Virginia from Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative

Good news! Bravo Glenn Youngkin!

Glenn Youngkin may well turn out to be the 2nd Donald Trump in recent U.S. political history!

Good to know when politicians resist the dominant Global Warming hoax and Climate Change religion!

Carbon taxes are an extremely artificial tax only to please the climate change/crisis tyrants! We need less taxation not more!

Governor-elect Youngkin said, “RGGI describes itself as a regional market for carbon. But it is really a carbon tax that is fully passed on to ratepayers. It’s a bad deal for Virginians. It a bad deal for Virginia businesses.” ...
“Governor-elect Youngkin made it clear that he fully understands the negative effects of staying in RGGI.  He could also add another reason for withdrawing Virginia: it is a compact between states that is unconstitutional under Article I, Section 10, Clause 3 of the Constitution, which states clearly that ‘No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, … enter into and Agreement or Compact with another State….’”"

New Brain Maps Can Predict Behaviors

Very recommendable! Amazing stuff! Comprehensive review and critique of connectome research. Learn that often dispassionate scientists can be voyeurs too. :-)

In some sense connectomics is a rather primitive approach to understand the functioning of the brain. E.g. it does not tell us much about the chemical communication between neurons etc.

"Last summer a group of Harvard University neuroscientists and Google engineers released the first wiring diagram of a piece of the human brain. The tissue, about the size of a pinhead, had been preserved, stained with heavy metals, cut into 5,000 slices and imaged under an electron microscope. This cubic millimeter of tissue accounts for only one-millionth of the entire human brain. Yet the vast trove of data depicting it comprises 1.4 petabytes [data]’ worth of brightly colored microscopy images of nerve cells, blood vessels and more. ...
including new types of cells never seen in other animals, such as neurons with axons that curl up and spiral atop each other and neurons with two axons instead of one. These findings just scratched the surface ...
In fact, the only species for which there is yet a comprehensive connectome is Caenorhabditis elegans, the humble roundworm.
Nevertheless, the masses of connectome data that scientists have amassed from worms, flies, mice and humans are already having a potent effect on neuroscience. ...
Recent work with C. elegans has demonstrated the power of large-scale connectomics. One experiment showed that it’s sometimes possible for scientists to predict the behavior of an animal from a knowledge of its connectome; another hinted at rules governing the linkage of neurons into working circuits. Those successes, however, also underscore how far large-scale connectomics still needs to go before it can tackle much more complex creatures. ...
About 35 years ago, the first full-brain wiring diagram was completed for the roundworm. For its time, the effort was heroic, even though the animal has only 302 neurons in its brain. It was carried out through the painstaking process of hand-drawing neuronal connections on printouts of electron microscopy images. It took more than 15 years to complete. ...
This approach is leading to impressive progress in understanding these animals. In a report in Cell published in September, scientists used the worm connectome to describe one of the most complex behaviors in the natural world: sex. Using video and calcium imaging — which measures and traces activity in brain cells — they recorded C. elegans during the act of mating. Videos showed the worms slithering around one another in serpentine patterns while white light from fluorescent proteins indicating neuronal activity flickered on and off along the length of their slender bodies. ...
For example, it has been known for some time that in C. elegans, the connections between neurons dramatically reorganize themselves between birth and adulthood. To understand how the brain changes throughout development, in a recent paper in Nature ... compared the connectomes of eight genetically identical roundworms ranging between larval and adult stages.
The most interesting finding of the study ... was that even though the worms were genetically identical, as much as 40% of the connections between nerve cells in their brains differed. Moreover, the connections that varied between individuals were weaker than those that were similar. Stronger connections that contained 100 synapses or more were consistent across multiple organisms.
... this finding points to the power of brain-map comparisons in bulk ... because each connectome is slightly different,” ... finding points to the existence of two classes of connections: variable ones and consistent ones. ...
When ... mapped the snippet of human brain, for example, they had no idea whether the strange things they saw were normal or one-offs due to the unique history and genetic makeup of the person. If they could map equivalent samples from 100 human brains, then they would get some clarity on these unknowns, but at 1.4 petabytes per brain, that is unlikely to happen anytime soon. ...
Nevertheless, connectomics is making important progress even where it can’t yet be large scale and where only partial connectomes exist. Work in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is particularly far along, both in the larva (which has about 10,000 neurons) and in the adult (with about 135,000 neurons). Last year, researchers ... released a synapse-level “hemi-brain” connectome that mapped many important control centers in the fly’s brain. This led to an important announcement in October, when neuroscientists uncovered dozens of new neuron types and circuits that seem to aid in fly navigation. ...
What Connections Can’t Do
The successes of connectomics can be bittersweet. For many years, a central criticism of connectomics has been that it is insufficient to explain how the brain functions. ...
Another limitation of the connectome is that it doesn’t tell us anything about the quality of the connections: whether they are strong or weak. It simply tells us that there is a connection. ... neurons make thousands of connections with other neurons in vast networks full of redundancies and pathways with overlapping functions. ... Connectomics also tells us almost nothing about the brain chemicals called neuromodulators, which circulate through the fluid surrounding neurons, unlike the neurotransmitter chemicals released precisely within the synaptic connections between neurons. They represent another way that cells in the brain communicate with one another. ..."

From the abstract:
"We acquired a rapidly preserved human surgical sample from the temporal lobe of the cerebral cortex. We stained a 1 mm3 volume with heavy metals, embedded it in resin, cut more than 5000 slices at ∼30 nm and imaged these sections using a high-speed multibeam scanning electron microscope. We used computational methods to render the three-dimensional structure containing 57,216 cells, hundreds of millions of neurites and 133.7 million synaptic connections. The 1.4 petabyte electron microscopy volume, the segmented cells, cell parts, blood vessels, myelin, inhibitory and excitatory synapses, and 104 manually proofread cells are available to peruse online. Many interesting and unusual features were evident in this dataset. Glia outnumbered neurons 2:1 and oligodendrocytes were the most common cell type in the volume. Excitatory spiny neurons comprised 69% of the neuronal population, and excitatory synapses also were in the majority (76%). The synaptic drive onto spiny neurons was biased more strongly toward excitation (70%) than was the case for inhibitory interneurons (48%). Despite incompleteness of the automated segmentation caused by split and merge errors, we could automatically generate (and then validate) connections between most of the excitatory and inhibitory neuron types both within and between layers. In studying these neurons we found that deep layer excitatory cell types can be classified into new subsets, based on structural and connectivity differences, and that chandelier interneurons not only innervate excitatory neuron initial segments as previously described, but also each other’s initial segments. Furthermore, among the thousands of weak connections established on each neuron, there exist rarer highly powerful axonal inputs that establish multi-synaptic contacts (up to ∼20 synapses) with target neurons. Our analysis indicates that these strong inputs are specific, and allow small numbers of axons to have an outsized role in the activity of some of their postsynaptic partners."

New Brain Maps Can Predict Behaviors | Quanta Magazine Rapid advances in large-scale connectomics are beginning to spotlight the importance of individual variations in the neural circuitry. They also highlight the limitations of “wiring diagrams” alone.

How Does Government Welfare Stack Up Against Private Charity? It’s No Contest

Very recommendable!

"... America's generosity as a whole is actually quite extensive, with Americans giving $471 billion in 2020, an all time high. That's more than what the vast majority of countries bring in for tax revenue. 80% of this is from individuals, according to Giving USA.
Americans, in general, are incredibly generous, with 25% of Americans volunteering every year. Converted to a dollar value, this is roughly $179 billion worth of work. Most of this charity comes from the rich, with 93% of households that make over $162,501 donating to charity and 91% of households that make over $125,001 donating to charity.
Since the government started the "War on Poverty" 56 years ago, it has spent $27 trillion on this effort. And yet, it was only the beginning 7 years when poverty rates went down. Why? Well, one likely explanation is that welfare has taught people not to work, as governmental welfare dependency statistics have shown. Indeed, 93% of welfare recipients rely on welfare for more than 2 years. Charity, on the other hand, is not guaranteed, so it encourages people to take responsibility and become self-sufficient.
Another problem with government welfare is the bureaucracy. For example, studies have found that 70% of the money spent on budgeting for government assistance gets spent upholding the bureaucracies, with only 30% actually going to the poor. ..."

"... Widely used biomarkers of Zn status include plasma, whole blood, and urine Zn, which decrease in severe Zn deficiency; however, accurate assessment of Zn status, especially in mild to moderate deficiency, is difficult, as studies with these biomarkers are often contradictory and inconsistent. Thus, sensitive and specific biological markers of Zn physiological status are still needed. In this communication, we provide the Zn status index (ZSI) concept, which consists of a three-pillar formula: (1) the LA:DGLA ratio, (2) mRNA gene expression of Zn-related proteins, and (3) gut microbiome profiling to provide a clear assessment of Zn physiological status and degree of Zn deficiency with respect to assessing dietary Zn manipulation. ..."

Chinese ophtalmologist Says China Targeted Her for Exposing Origin of COVID-19

I do not know how credible this story is. What is a bit surprising that two ophthalmologists have become whistle blowers about this pandemic according to the article. This article does not explain how the ophthalmologist Ms. Dr. Li-Meng Yan became an expert virologist, a serious and curious omission.

Anyway, the article reiterates that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was also involved with military research potentially in biological weapons. We also know that Anthony Fauci and his ilk financed so called gain of function research at that institute in circumvention of U.S. research restrictions!

The SARS-CoV-2 virus seems almost too perfect to be natural or zoonotic. Is it a pure coincidence that the virus appears to have spread in Wuhan first? Say they there a wet markets in Wuhan etc. There are wet markets in other Chinese cities as well. Then this leaves e.g. the question was it an intentional or accidental release?
Furthermore, the new virus was from the beginning highly infectious specifically to humans and it is lethal mostly only to very elderly and humans with serious comorbidities! The designers of this virus may have underestimated the latter lethality! The timing of the release is also suspicious as to interfere with the crucial 2020 presidential election in the U.S.
Then, there is e.g. the story about the sudden disappearance of critical virus genome data (see e.g. here) ...

"Yan has a medical degree and a doctorate in ophthalmology from Chinese universities."

From the abstract:
"... The alternative theory that the virus may have come from a research laboratory is, however, strictly censored on peer-reviewed scientific journals. Nonetheless, SARS-CoV-2 shows biological characteristics that are inconsistent with a naturally occurring, zoonotic virus. In this report, we describe the genomic, structural, medical, and literature evidence, which, when considered together, strongly contradicts the natural origin theory. The evidence shows that SARS-CoV-2 should be a laboratory product created by using bat coronaviruses ZC45 and/or ZXC21 as a template and/or backbone. Building upon the evidence, we further postulate a synthetic route for SARS-CoV-2, demonstrating that the laboratory-creation of this coronavirus is convenient and can be accomplished in approximately six months. Our work emphasizes the need for an independent investigation into the relevant research laboratories."

From the body:
"... As a coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 differs significantly from other respiratory and/or zoonotic viruses: it attacks multiple organs; it is capable of undergoing a long period of asymptomatic infection; it is highly transmissible and significantly lethal in high-risk populations; it is well-adapted to humans since the very start of its emergence; it is highly efficient in binding the human ACE2 receptor (hACE2), the affinity of which is greater than that associated with the ACE2 of any other potential host ..."

Are leptons all alike? Is the discovery of a new force imminent?

Recommendable! Well written! The quest to find an undiscovered force continues!

"... Physicists have long made cursory checks to understand if leptons are really as similar to one another as they seem. One aspect they’ve tested for is lepton universality—whether all of the charged leptons and neutral leptons interact via the same forces. ...
Recently, however, data from experiments like CERN’s LHCb and Fermilab’s Muon g-2 have accumulated into a compelling case that muons don’t behave as they’re predicted to. One possibility is that the electron, muon and tau could interact differently from one another, due to the presence of an undiscovered force. ..."

Study can't confirm/reproduce lab results for about 50% of cancer experiments

Very concerning!

Can we expect similar devastating results for other areas of medicine? How about SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19?

The wild west of science! Scientists are all too human!

"Eight years ago, a team of researchers launched a project to carefully repeat early but influential lab experiments in cancer research.

They recreated 50 experiments, the type of preliminary research with mice and test tubes that sets the stage for new cancer drugs. The results reported Tuesday: About half the scientific claims didn’t hold up. ...
For the project, the researchers tried to repeat experiments from cancer biology papers published from 2010 to 2012 in major journals such as Cell, Science and Nature.
Overall, 54% of the original findings failed to measure up to statistical criteria set ahead of time by the Reproducibility Project, according to the team’s study published online Tuesday by eLife. The nonprofit eLife receives funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute ...
Often, they couldn’t get help from the scientists who did the original work when they had questions about which strain of mice to use or where to find specially engineered tumor cells.
... it is concerning that about a third of scientists were not helpful, and, in some cases, were beyond not helpful,” ..."

Technique enables 3D real-time rendering of scenes from 2D images

Recommendable! This could be a breakthrough in 3D scene rendering from 2D images!

"... A new technique demonstrated by researchers at MIT and elsewhere is able to represent 3D scenes from images about 15,000 times faster than some existing models.

The method represents a scene as a 360-degree light field, which is a function that describes all the light rays in a 3D space, flowing through every point and in every direction. The light field is encoded into a neural network, which enables faster rendering of the underlying 3D scene from an image.

The light-field networks (LFNs) the researchers developed can reconstruct a light field after only a single observation of an image, and they are able to render 3D scenes at real-time frame rates. ...
By mapping each ray using Plücker coordinates, the LFN is also able to compute the geometry of the scene due to the parallax effect. Parallax is the difference in apparent position of an object when viewed from two different lines of sight. ... The LFN can tell the depth of objects in a scene due to parallax, and uses this information to encode a scene’s geometry as well as its appearance. ...
They found that LFNs were able to render scenes at more than 500 frames per second, about three orders of magnitude faster than other methods. In addition, the 3D objects rendered by LFNs were often crisper than those generated by other models.
An LFN is also less memory-intensive, requiring only about 1.6 megabytes of storage, as opposed to 146 megabytes for a popular baseline method. ..."

From the abstract:
"Inferring representations of 3D scenes from 2D observations is a fundamental problem of computer graphics, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. Emerging 3D-structured neural scene representations are a promising approach to 3D scene understanding. In this work, we propose a novel neural scene representation, Light Field Networks or LFNs, which represent both geometry and appearance of the underlying 3D scene in a 360-degree, four-dimensional light field parameterized via a neural implicit representation. Rendering a ray from an LFN requires only a *single* network evaluation, as opposed to hundreds of evaluations per ray for ray-marching or volumetric based renderers in 3D-structured neural scene representations. In the setting of simple scenes, we leverage meta-learning to learn a prior over LFNs that enables multi-view consistent light field reconstruction from as little as a single image observation. ..."

Conspiracy Theories about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941

Every year we commemorate this day that will lives in infamy! Every year several conspiracy theories are warmed up again and are regurgitated!

Most of these conspiracy theories are garbage and they only superficially sound convincing or plausible. They often claim to tell you the truth! Purveyors of such conspiracy theories have often ulterior motives like implying that the U.S. was imperialist and a war criminal as well.

However, as usual history is most of the times much more complicated than what talking heads like to select for their presentation. See e.g. Events leading to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Japan in the first half of the 20th century was a military dictatorship invading and attacking various countries etc. to build their empire.

Here are two examples:

  1. The November 1941 U.S. oil embargo against Japan provoked the attack (see e.g. here). Picking one singular measure out of a history of many events and measures by various parties involved to explain a course of historical events is a sure sign of demagoguery
  2. The U.S. had advance intelligence information of an imminent attack on Pearl Harbor, but did not warn the military command stationed in Pearl Harbor. How many lives were saved by keeping it secret from the Japanese that the U.S. was able to crack/decipher their diplomatic and some of their military codes?

Epstein transferred tens of millions to Ghislaine Maxwell, JPMorgan executive testifies

This case may well demonstrate how women are aiding and abetting male pedophiles and sex traffickers. If this is confirmed, she was apparently handsomely paid for her being a partner in crime!

Unfortunately, it seems an frequently overlooked fact that women are often helping male sex predators to perpetrate their sex crimes. Male sex predators are often not lone wolves!

This begs also another question: how often are women the main perpetrators of a sex crime? This is probably a very underreported issue.
"... Research on sex offenders has historically focused, almost exclusively, on male offenders. Studies of female sex offenders are relatively rare, at least in part because most known sex offenders are male. Females comprise only 1.2 percent of arrests for rape and 8.0 percent of arrests for all other sex offenses (U.S. Department of Justice, 2002). Women who are sex offenders are most often convicted of offenses against children ...
In the criminological literature, attention to female sex offenders is rare, with the first articles appearing in the 1980s. Although recognized, female sex offending is not only often considered less serious than that of males ..., but is also acknowledged as possibly less likely to be detected or reported " (Source: Federal Probation, Volume 68, No. 3)

Congress drops proposal to require women to register for the draft

So this sex discrimination is allowed to continue in violation of gender equality! Either men do not have to register anymore or women have to be treated the same as men in this respect!

Here some republicans and conservatives are clearly on the wrong side of the issue!

"Women will not be required to register for the military draft in the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act, according to Politico.
Legislation expanding the Selective Service System received bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress earlier this year.
Women have been allowed to serve in combat since 2015, prompting calls to include women in the draft.  ..."

Congress Should Not Continue to Delegate Its Power to the Executive Branch

Recommendable! Law-maker in chief! Ruling by executive order! Caution: The Cato Institute is also thoroughly infected with the Trump Derangement Syndrome.

"By now, Congress has ceded enough policymaking initiative to render itself expendable. When Biden wants a law made, he can go it alone."

"Biden has been issuing executive orders at an unprecedented clip for modern presidents — 71 and counting. If he sustains this pace through the year, Biden would almost double the combined annual average of his three immediate predecessors. ...
In this regard, Biden’s actions reflect a modern trend. Scholars have coined the phrase “presidential administration” to describe American government since at least the Clinton administration. The idea is that the president, rather than Congress, has become the primary policymaker in Washington, D.C. Think former president Barack Obama’s “pen and phone” ...
And therein lies the rub: Congress has given away, or “delegated,” much of its policymaking power over the last century to the executive branch by passing broadly‐worded laws that empower the federal bureaucracy to impose law‐like rules. For the most part, Congress delegates to pass the buck. When voters want something done, lawmakers could legislate policy specifics, but they’ll get blamed if they err. By delegating, Congress can escape accountability. ...
The good news is that the Supreme Court might compel Congress to get its act together.
In a line of cases stretching back more than two decades, the Court has been hinting that Congress must be clear when it delegates significant policy decisions to the executive branch. This principle is known as the “major questions doctrine,” and, if it takes hold, presidents would have far less leeway to advance their agendas through creative interpretation of old laws. ..."

How autocrat Erdogan’s Pseudoeconomics Is Ruining the Turkish Economy

Recommendable. However, the author Mustafa Akyol paints history in simple black & white colors like woodblock cut art. And the author suffers from the Trump Derangement Syndrome!

Why Turkey is e.g. still a member of NATO or why the EU still tries to make it a member while Islamist President Erdogan is in office is curious to say the least.

How Erdogan’s Pseudoscience Is Ruining the Turkish Economy | Cato at Liberty Blog One of the most startling stories in the world these days is what the Wall Street Journal recently called “The Erdogan Lira Crisis.” The crisis is that Turkey’s national currency has been plummeting at an astonishing rate: in 2012, 1 U.S. dollar equaled 1.8 Turkish liras. Today, after an accelerating downward spiral of the Turkish currency, 1 dollar equals 13.7 liras.

On Masked Autoencoders Are Scalable Vision Learners

Recommendable! A new paper on self-supervised learning by Facebook with well known authors like Kaiming He (first author), Piotr Dollar, and Ross Girshick (senior author).

To mask 75% of an image is very high, no matter whether it is random or not! However, the results are impressive, but something seems to be still missing as the resulting images are still kind of blurry.

From the abstract:
"... Our MAE approach is simple: we mask random patches of the input image and reconstruct the missing pixels. It is based on two core designs. First, we develop an asymmetric encoder-decoder architecture, with an encoder that operates only on the visible subset of patches (without mask tokens), along with a lightweight decoder that reconstructs the original image from the latent representation and mask tokens. Second, we find that masking a high proportion of the input image, e.g., 75%, yields a nontrivial and meaningful self-supervisory task. ..."

From the main text:
"...  It has an asymmetric encoder-decoder design. Our encoder operates only on the visible subset of patches (without mask tokens), and our decoder is lightweight and reconstructs the input from the latent rep-
resentation along with mask tokens ...
Random sampling with a high masking ratio (i.e., the ratio of removed patches) largely eliminates redundancy, thus creating a task that cannot be easily solved by extrapolation from visible neighboring patches ... The uniform distribution prevents a potential center bias ..."
