It is absolutely amazing how Goodall presents the history of music.

1874 is about Richard Wagner’s famous Ring Cycle. Did you know that Richard Wagner was an 1848 revolutionary?
1564 is about the invention and impact of the modern violin, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, and much more

I have very recently discovered the overall excellent music documentaries by British composer Howard Goodall on YouTube. Mr. Goodall is an astonishing and very knowledgeable story teller, he sings along, and he plays so many musical instruments in his documentaries.

Communicating With Aliens

Is it actually a good idea for humans to send out signals into the universe to try to communicate with extraterrestrial life if it exists?

Just read this article: Megawatt laser beacon could communicate with aliens. This is not the first attempt by humans, e.g. Voyager program probes of the 1970s.

On the other hand, scientists only in 2007 discovered strange so called fast radio bursts (FRB) for the first time (see e.g. here).

Would it not be wiser to keep a low profile und only try passively to discover whether aliens are themselves actively communicating with each other or aliens reach out to other aliens?

Perhaps, humanity will find out the hard way that aliens are not humanitarians!

Just read this article about latest research on so called Fast Radio Bursts that were first discovered in 2007: Bevy of mysterious fast radio bursts spotted by Canadian telescope Bounty includes second known example of a repeating burst. If a wild speculation is allowed for a very brief moment, are these perhaps signals from aliens? Let’s stay tuned to what scientists may discover in the future.

This week we received news like this Earth's Closest Cousin Discovered Among New Pile of Planets Called Kepler 452b, the world is a bit bigger than Earth and could have a surface suitable for water and life. We read here: “Called Kepler 452b, the planet orbits a 6 billion-year-old sunlike star about 1,400 light-years away. Kepler 452b is about 60 percent larger than Earth, and perhaps five times as massive. With a year lasting 385 days, it sits in the region around its star where temperatures are just right for maintaining liquid water on a world’s surface. … A new haul of 500 planet candidates announced Thursday brings Kepler’s total catalog of possible planets to 4,696. Twelve of those are smaller than two Earth-widths, and nine orbit stars that are similar in size and temperature to the sun. More than 1,000 Kepler planets have been confirmed—and that’s just in one tiny piece of sky.”

I quote from the above article: “This discovery, made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), reveals that the protoplanetary disk surrounding the million-year-old star MWC 480 is brimming with methyl cyanide (CH3CN), a complex carbon-based molecule. Both this molecule and its simpler cousin hydrogen cyanide (HCN) were found in the cold outer reaches of the star's newly formed disk, in a region that astronomers believe is analogous to our own Kuiper Belt - the realm of icy planetesimals and comets beyond Neptune.” (emphasis added)

Just read the abstract of “Untangling dips and pulses in starlight” (Unfortunately, you have to sign in to read even the abstract. What a stupidity!)

So I quote here freely from the above abstract:
“The menagerie of known exoplanets continues to grow with Kepler data. The NASA spacecraft has monitored stars for brightness dips due to planetary transits, enabling Campante et al. to find five rocky planets orbiting the K star Kepler-444—all between Mercury and Venus in size. Kepler's precise photometry also allowed the team to measure the star's asteroseismic pulsations. A comparison of those values with stellar evolution models revealed an age of 11.2 ± 1.0 billion years, or 80% as old as the universe itself. A planetary system this old (over twice the age of Earth) demonstrates the wide time frame in which Earth-sized planets have existed and helps astronomers discern the earliest times of planet formation.”

An Update

Recently, I came across this article in the Neue Zuericher Zeitung titled “Potenzial von Exoplaneten untersucht” (German language) published on 9/19/2013.

This article focuses on so called habitable zones and its lifetime. Habitable zones are defined as the distance from the star that allows for human like life or where water is liquid. I am afraid this is an artificially narrow focus, because life on other planets may be quite different from our own. To assume that life on other planets in the universe is similar to our own is heroic.

Encouraging Recent Developments
Exoplanet stands for extrasolar planet. Almost 800 of them have been identified by now (June 2012). In our Milky Way Galaxy alone, there are an estimated 160 billion exoplanets. The first confirmed detection of several terrestrial-mass planets occurred in 1992. Given these mind boggling numbers, how unique is planet earth?
May I Speculate About Extraterrestrial Life
I usually do not speculate, but I will make an exception here. Extra terrestrial life was something very remote to me to think about, but the confirmed discovery of exoplanets changes my cognition.
Some kind of extraterrestrial life will likely be discovered in space, it is only a matter of time. Probably, these forms of life are maybe quite different from life on earth.
Most likely there is even intelligent life out there. If so, how will we be able to communicate with these beings? I bet we will find a way. Perhaps, they are already trying to communicate with us, but we are yet too primitive to understand. How advanced are they? Are they peaceful? What do they know about us? Have they already visited us?
Extraterrestrial Life And Faith
Do these intelligent beings believe in something like religion or do they have some kind of faith? If yes, do they believe in something like god? If yes, what are the similarities or differences? Would Christians accept these beings as children of god or being made in the image of god? Was Jesus the only son of god? Will religious differences rather divide or unite us?

In the meantime (10/17/2014), astronomer David Weintraub has written a book about this subject titled “Religions and Extraterrestrial Life: How Will We Deal with It?” (See a review here). According to the review, the astronomer argues among other things that Asian religions like Buddhism can easier accommodate the existence of extraterrestrial life and that e.g. Judaism is kind of neutral.

Merger Of Siemens & Alstom In Jeopardy

Just read this German article about the pending merger of Siemens & Alstom: ZUGHERSTELLER : Fusion von Siemens und Alstom steht auf der Kippe.

What an ironic subject! It almost laser focuses on what is wrong with the European Union as far as economic policy is concerned:
  1. Leading European politicians bemoan that their train manufacturers cannot compete with the largest Chinese manufacturer that is gaining market share around the world
  2. The EU was unable to foster big European business (promoting business champions) and that bullet trains were a promising business model of the future

May I remind that train transportation is a very rigid and limited 19th century technology. From a 21st century perspective it is very questionable where trains still make sense whether short or long distance.

Econometrics & Artificial Intelligence

Just watched part of this tutorial session presented at the NIPS (NeurIPS) 2018 conference titled Counterfactual Inference by Susan Athey (The Economics of Technology Professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business). She actually talked about the intersection of economics and AI. Among other things she mentioned that Google used some game theoretic or other economic approach to develop AlphaGo.

These are some personal, subjective observations. I have studied and graduated in economics.

Now that I have studied tons of research papers in machine learning and artificial intelligence, I can say that:
  1. Many of the statistical approaches used in AI for datasets or models have been used in econometrics for decades. Thus data science, machine learning, and AI have a very familiar ‘feel’ to me
  2. Economists have for decades worked with humongous datasets and massive models to predict human behavior and economic outcomes. Thus, I suspect that the recent, sometimes spectacular successes of AI are also founded on the previous research done in econometrics
  3. Researchers in AI do not make any cross references to any achievements of econometrics or applications of econometrics. Is this glaring omission a blind spot or some kind of ignorance?

Unfortunately, I do not have the time to explore this cross fertilization from econometrics to AI much further here. I will try to add to this post as time goes by

Reversal Of The Arrow Of Time Discovered?

Just came across these new articles:
  1. Arrow of time and its reversal on the IBM quantum computer (published 3/13/2019; appears to be the full article)
  2. Physicists reverse time using quantum computer (published 3/13/2019; refers to above reference)

Unfortunately, I did not have the time to read both of these articles. However, I have the impression that this experiment is perhaps a bit too clever to prove the point.

“"However, Schrödinger's equation is reversible," adds Valerii Vinokur, a co-author of the paper, from the Argonne National Laboratory, U.S. "Mathematically, it means that under a certain transformation called complex conjugation, the equation will describe a 'smeared' electron localizing back into a small region of space over the same time period." Although this phenomenon is not observed in nature, it could theoretically happen due to a random fluctuation in the cosmic microwave background permeating the universe.” (New article 2; emphasis added)

According to the authors, these errors are due to imperfections in the actual quantum computer.” (New article 2; emphasis added) Begs the question what else is due to these “imperfections”?

If this is confirmed that would be huge! Apparently, more evidence for reversibility of time in the microscosmos has been discovered over the recent past (Source 1 lists such research).

How important are initial conditions [at the beginning of the universe?]? From chaos theory, we have already learnt that the initial conditions are critical for the path or trajectory of chaotic complex systems.

“... Here we report the experimental demonstration of the reversal of the arrow of time for two initially quantum correlated qubits (two spin-1/2 systems) prepared in local thermal states at different temperatures employing Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques … For initially correlated systems, we observe a spontaneous heat current from the cold to the hot spin and show that this process is made possible by a decrease of the mutual information between the spins … It additionally establishes that the arrow of time is not an absolute but a relative concept that depends on the choice of initial conditions. ... Thus, an anomalous heat current does not seem to be restricted to extremely microscopic systems. The precise scaling of this effect with the system size is an interesting subject for future experimental and theoretical investigations.“

One may freely speculate if the reversal of time is confirmed then e.g. the speed of light constraint is in question too and vice versa.

Building Synthetic Cells From Scratch

To build synthetic cells from the bottom up has been one of the hot frontiers in science for about the past two decades!

European Advances

Surprise, surprise European scientists appear to be at the cutting edge in this field. “In September [of 2018], the US National Science Foundation (NSF) announced its first programme on synthetic cells, funded to the tune of $10 million.” What a late comer to the game! Whereas “... several European investigators ... have proposed building a synthetic cell as one of the European Commission’s Future and Emerging Technologies Flagship schemes, which receive funding of €1 billion.”

Within A Decade

Some scientists predict that we will have functioning synthetic cells created from molecules or other basic ingredients within a decade. We may even achieve industrial scale by then.

Artificial Mitochondria

Without energy synthetic cells would not work very well. “Joachim Spatz’s group at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany, has built a rudimentary mitochondrion that can create ATP inside a vesicle.” In order to do this, they used latest microfluidic technologies.

More Efficient Photosynthesis

According to this article, scientists are already working replicating photosynthesis. Photosynthesis could be an energy source of the future.

“Another Max Planck [Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology] synthetic-biology group ... has been chipping away at other approaches to constructing cellular metabolic pathways. ... pathways that allow photosynthetic microbes to pull carbon dioxide from the environment and make sugars and other cellular building blocks. ...

His group sketched out a system design that could convert CO2 into malate, a key metabolite produced during photosynthesis. ... team searched databases for enzymes that might perform each of the reactions. For a few, they needed to tweak existing enzymes into designer ones.

In the end, they found 17 enzymes from 9 different organisms, including E. coli, an archaeon, the plant Arabidopsis and humans. The reaction, perhaps unsurprisingly, was inefficient and slow7. ... After some further enzyme engineering, … operates 20% more efficiently than photosynthesis. Expanding this work, [team] has begun constructing a crude version of a synthetic chloroplast ...”

As an aside: About four years ago it was shown that quantum mechanics explains the efficiency of photosynthesis (see e.g. here). How will this research of synthetic photosynthesis and quantum effects work out?

Programmable Bioreactors

“... at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis is working on ways to build programmable bioreactors, by introducing simple genetic circuits into liposomes and fusing them together to create more-complex bioreactors. ...
builds these bioreactors using a spinning tube system ... which produces smaller liposomes. The researchers add circles of DNA called plasmids that they have designed to perform a particular function, along with all the machinery needed to make proteins from DNA.”

Minimal Genome

The J. Craig Vintner Institute (JCVI) “... took one of the smallest-known microbial genomes on the planet, that of the bacterium Mycoplasma mycoides, and systematically disrupted its genes to identify the essential ones. Once they had that information, they chemically stitched together a minimal genome in the laboratory.

This synthesized genome contained 473 genes — about half of what was in the original organism — and it was transplanted into a related bacterial species, Mycoplasma capricolum. In 2016, the team showed that this minimal synthetic genome could ‘boot up’ a free-living, although slow-growing organism … As a next step, and supported by an NSF grant of nearly $1 million, ... will attempt to install the JCVI-syn3.0a genome into a synthetic liposome containing the machinery needed to convert DNA into protein, to see whether it can survive. … JCVI has been doing adaptive laboratory evolution experiments with JCVI-syn3.0a, selecting for organisms that grow faster in a nutrient-rich broth. So far, after about 400 divisions, ... have obtained cells that grow about 15% faster than the original organism. ... a handful of gene-sequence changes popping up. But there’s no evidence yet of the microbe developing new cellular functions or increasing its fitness by leaps and bounds.”
