Many people don't realize how many animals are used annually for scientific and medical research. We would not allow this to be done to humans.
As I wrote back in 2014, these animals deserve our prayers and thoughts. We should do our best to replace animal experimentation as fast and as much as possible!
It is my impression that e.g. animal rights activists have become very muted on this subject for some reason and very surprisingly! Where are they when you need them?

Of these 1,434,403 procedures, more than 99% were carried out on mice, fish and rats and 82% were classified as causing a similar level of pain, or less, as an injection. ..."
