It is a surprise to me that such a superfluous Department even exists in the UK! What a waste of taxpayer money!
No such Department existed before 1992. It was originally even created by the Conservatives under the Prime Minister John Mayor (promoted by PM Thatcher).
New government departments/ministries should rarely if ever be created! They tend to expand their staff, cost more money, issue more regulations ... You get the picture!

Shockingly, we’re not sure all of that staff and spending is employed in the most efficient manner. Many of its responsibilities would be more at home in other departments and plenty of its 45 arm’s length bodies are ripe for simplification."
