A new book by the somewhat controversial author Mustafa Akyol (here is his own website. Unfortunately, he stopped writing blog posts in 2011).
His previous, related book was published in 2011: Islam without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty "A provocative manifesto for an interpretation of Islam that synthesizes liberal ideas and respect for the Islamic tradition."
"... he reveals how Muslims lost the universalism that made them a great civilization in their earlier centuries. He especially demonstrates how values often associated with Western Enlightenment ― freedom, reason, tolerance, and an appreciation of science ― had Islamic counterparts, which sadly were cast aside in favor of more dogmatic views, often for political ends. ..."
No doubt that Islam once was more tolerant, enlightened, and universalist!
