What was this Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) general doing at the Syria-Iraq border?

"A senior commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was killed Sunday in a drone strike along the Syria-Iraq border, several Arab media outlets reported, citing Iraqi officials. ...The strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iran-backed militias in Iraq known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, and five others. ...Last week, the chief scientist of Iran's nuclear arms program, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, was assassinated north of Tehran. In August, Al-Qaida's second-in-command Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah was reportedly assassinated in Tehran by Israeli operatives acting at the behest of the United States. ..."
