She will always be remembered for her movie roles as a prodigy child actress.
What is lesser known about her:
- She publicly announced her breast cancer and mastectomy in 1973. “[S]he became one of the first prominent women to speak openly about breast cancer.”
- She was perhaps the first white girl to dance with a black actor in a movie, i.e. Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson. Shirley Temple and Bill Robinson appeared together in a number of films. According to NPR Ms. Temple and Mr. Robinson remained friends until his early death. She is reported to have admired Mr. Robinson as a dance instructor.
For some reason, the Wikipedia article about Shirley Temple does not mention Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson.
