Western Colonialism Debunked

Posted: 7/14/2018

A Popular, But False Stereotype

Colonialism stands for oppression, domination, dependency, and conquest.

For Marxists, colonialism was systematic exploitation. They called it imperialism and saw it as the final phase or stage of capitalism. How wrong they were! However, this false, simplistic narrative is still regurgitated and widely disseminated and believed by contemporaries.

It is like painting in black and white only.

Introduction

Nothing makes history more exciting than to introduce some biography of extraordinary individuals that made a significant positive difference. Following are a selected few and, so far, these examples are predominantly from the British colonial past. These individuals are presented in no particular order. Some of these British individuals surely could be called eccentrics, for which the UK is so famous for.

I am sure there were similar individuals from other European countries, e.g. Belgium, Netherlands, Germany etc., but I did not have the time to research more.

Richard Francis Burton

His many adventures and exploits during his life are mind boggling. He was a polyglot extraordinaire!

“Burton defied many aspects of the pervasive British ethnocentrism of his day, relishing personal contact with human cultures in all their variety. His works and letters extensively criticized colonial policies of the British Empire, even to the detriment of his career. … Burton was a captain in the army of the East India Company, serving in India (and later, briefly, in the Crimean War). Following this, he was engaged by the Royal Geographical Society to explore the east coast of Africa and led an expedition guided by locals and was the first European known to have seen Lake Tanganyika. In later life, he served as British consul in Fernando Pó, Santos, Damascus [modern day Syria] ...” (emphasis added)

“His studies of Hindu culture had progressed to such an extent that "my Hindu teacher officially allowed me to wear the Janeu (Brahmanical Thread)",... although the truth of this has been questioned … Burton's interest (and active participation) in the cultures and religions of India was considered peculiar by some of his fellow soldiers who accused him of "going native" and called him "the White Nigger". ... Burton had many peculiar habits that set him apart from other soldiers. While in the army, he kept a large menagerie of tame monkeys [holy animals in India] in the hopes of learning their language.” (emphasis added)

“... him to attempt a Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca and, in this case, Medina). It was this journey, undertaken in 1853, which first made Burton famous. He had planned it whilst traveling disguised among the Muslims of Sindh, and had laboriously prepared for the adventure by study and practice (including undergoing the Muslim tradition of circumcision to further lower the risk of being discovered)” (incredible; emphasis added)

Allan Octavian Hume

“Allan Octavian Hume, CB ICS (6 June 1829 – 31 July 1912) was a member of the Imperial Civil Service (later the Indian Civil Service), a political reformer, ornithologist and botanist who worked in British India. He was one of the founders of the Indian National Congress, a political party that was later to lead in the Indian independence movement.” (emphasis added)
Yes, you read this right this British civil service member was on of the cofounders of the Indian National Congress. I do not remember, I have ever learnt this before.

“As an administrator of Etawah [a city in Uttar Pradesh], he saw the Indian Rebellion of 1857 as a result of misgovernance and made great efforts to improve the lives of the common people. The district of Etawah was among the first to be returned to normality and over the next few years Hume's reforms led to the district being considered a model of development. ” (emphasis added)

“... like his father Joseph Hume, the radical MP, he was bold and outspoken in questioning British policies in India. He rose in 1871 to the position of secretary to the Department of Revenue, Agriculture, and Commerce under Lord Mayo” (great example of British exceptionalism; emphasis added)

Major General Charles ‘Hindoo’ Stuart

I tend to believe, this British gentleman was an eccentric in the best sense of the word.

Charles Stuart (1758 - 1828) was an officer in the East India Company Army and is well known for being one of the few British officers to embrace Hindu culture while stationed there, earning the nickname Hindoo Stuart. What were his fellow soldiers in the military thinking?

In his teens, Stuart left Ireland for India, where he remained for the rest of his life. Starting as a cadet, he rose through the ranks to become a Major-General. His last command was the Saugor Field Force.

He "had studied the language, manners and customs of the natives of this country with so much enthusiasm, his intimacy with them ... obtained for him the name of Hindoo Stuart”.

He published his letters extolling the virtues of "elegant, simple, sensible, and sensual" Indian saris vis-a-vis "the prodigious structural engineering European women strapped themselves into in order to hold their bellies in, project their breasts out and allow their dresses to balloon grandly up and over towards the floor".

In his book Vindication of the Hindoos (1808), Stuart criticised the work of European missionaries in India, claiming that:
  1. "Hinduism little needs the meliorating hand of Christianity to render its votaries a sufficiently correct and moral people for all the useful purposes of a civilised society."
  2. "Wherever I look around me, in the vast ocean of Hindu mythology, I discover Piety....Morality...and as far as I can rely on my judgement, it appears the most complete and ample system of Moral Allegory that the world has ever produced."
  3. Throughout this book Stuart warns of the dangers of the "obnoxious" missionaries and of attempts to convert Indians to Christianity, a process he describes as "impolitic, inexpedient, dangerous, unwise and insane". He asks "if their religion is insulted what confidence can we repose in the fidelity of our Hindu soldiers?" presaging, it is said, some of the causes of the very fateful Mutiny of 1857.

Stuart was buried with his idols at the South Park Street Cemetery in Calcutta, in a tomb which took the form of a Hindu temple. Looks quite impressive even today.

His remarkable collection of antiquities forms the basis of the British Museum's ancient Hindu and Buddhist sculpture collection from the Indian Subcontinent, now known as the Bridge Collection. “Stuart was a collector of Indian sculpture principally from Bihar, Bengal, Orissa and Central India. He opened the collections in his house in Wood Street, Calcutta, to the public. It contained weaponry, costume, prints, natural history specimens and a library. …  He was a student of Indian culture and a vocal champion of Indian values during the pamphlet controversy of the early nineteenth century from which he acquired the name 'Hindoo Stuart'.”

As an aside: It appears that the famous Encyclopedia Britannica does not have an entry on this gentleman (as of 11/1/2017). Very Disappointing!

John James Cowperthwaite

Many years I read about this extraordinary colonial civil service officer and how he made Hong Kong into a truly astonishing free market success story. For a long time, I did not know there were many others before him.

Since his story is well and widely known, I will not repeat it here.

Where were the first, new leaders of an independent Indian subcontinent educated? What did they learn from the British?

Since Independence, India is the largest, successful democracy on earth with all its wrinkles and failures! If this is not an awe inspiring British colonial success, what is?

Yann LeCun: One Of Mark Zuckerberg's Extremely Left Leaning Employees?

Posted: 7/14/2018  Updated: 4/14/2019, 7/15/2018

Update Of 4/14/2019

As of today, Yann LeCun decided to cut me off from commenting on his public posts on his Facebook page. Very fitting for an intolerant leftist full of hubris. He is also one of those hard and naive leftists who can not handle the truth or criticism!

It is his loss not mine! :-)

A Vice President & Chief Scientist At Facebook

Yann LeCun is the VP & Chief AI Scientist at Facebook according to his LinkedIn profile. Yann LeCun is actually one of the superstars of AI & machine learning.

I have recently liked his Facebook page, therefore about two posts by Yann LeCun appeared on my Facebook page in the past few days. Both of them were openly and kind of directly against President Trump. Not only that, he essentially and unreflectively (I hope) regurgitated typical leftist/progressive and absurd talking points like Trump has a mental issue (e.g. wordplay on paranoid and pronoid) or Peter Strzok’s “fiery” response during the Congressional Hearing about him (LeCun later also commented favorably about Strzok’s possibly fake outrage that Trump insulted a Veteran).

Yann LeCun Responded On His Facebook Posting

I had challenged Yann LeCun on both of his recent Facebook postings listed above. Today (7/15/2018) he responded to one of his two Facebook postings:
“You don't need to be "extreme left leaning" to see that Trump is a lying, incompetent racist who has no sense of basic human decency and no respect for democratic institutions. Anyone, conservative or progressive, who is in favor of democracy and human decency can see that. Are you? Can you?” (emphasis added)

My response to his response in return: “Mon dieu, you entertain a narrow, highly distorted and biased view of the current president. I suspect, it has to do with your upbringing in France (myself I am from Germany). I further suspect, you have a very poor and incomplete understanding of U.S. history and the Declaration of Independence as well as the U.S. Constitution/State constitutions. Recherchez vous si'l vous plait. Merci!”

Zuckerberg About An Extremely Left Leaning Place

About April 10, 2018, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, gave a testimony in the U.S. Congress where among other things, he had the courage to admit “I understand where that concern is coming from because Facebook and the tech industry are located in Silicon Valley, which is an extremely left-leaning place” (source; emphasis added). I guess, he knew what he was talking about.

I personally do not like these awful show trials of business leaders in the U.S. Congress at all. It is often not much more than grandstanding and chest beating of our elected politicians to drag a business leader before them and lash out at them. In the case of Mark Zuckerberg this was certainly the case!

The Bubble Of Silicon Valley

They think they are so smart, open minded, and sophisticated, working on cutting/bleeding edge technology to the benefit of all mankind. They are so proud of the wisdom of crowd sourcing etc.

Turns out, that they rather live in a serious bubble and they are mightily trapped/stuck in really narrow minded groupthink!

No Harm Intended

I don’t mean any harm to or to judge Yann LeCun’s political views. Everyone is entitled to their opinions! His professional work in AI is excellent/outstanding and greatly admired by many, including myself.

Ted Kennedy And Chappaquiddick

The trial judge is quoted as saying: “He has already been and will continue to be punished far beyond anything this court can impose—the ends of justice would be satisfied by the imposition of the minimum jail sentence and the suspension of that sentence, assuming the defendant accepts the suspension” (emphasis added)

Ted Kennedy should have volunteered to go to jail for two months for leaving the scene of an accident and should not have accepted the suspension as the judge suggested!

Perhaps then Ted Kennedy would have become a much better politician than he ever was!

Too Many Stupid Donkeys In The U.S. Democratic Party

Posted: 7/12/2018

Motivation

These days are the congressional hearings regarding the high level FBI agent Peter Strzok, who among other things was fired from the infamous Robert Mueller investigation, who was involved in the Hillary Clinton investigation, and who had a dalliance with another FBI agent (female) discussing in text messages how to stop candidate Trump and more.

That a lot of high ranking politicians (Harry Reid, Pelosi, Schumer, Kamala Harris, Pocahontas, and so many more) from the Democratic Party have been awful and leftist to point beyond comprehension is severely damaging to Democracy in America!

When Politicians Are Grossly Irresponsible

Today, I followed for about 30 minutes or so the U.S. Congressional hearing about FBI agent Peter Strzok. During these 30 minutes, mostly Democratic Party politicians were given their allotted time during the hearing. Most of these democrats used their entire time to do election campaigning, running down their talking points. This was preposterous to watch! Not even a moment of pretense to take these hearings seriously although this hearing deals with what appears has the markings of Watergate II.

Sometimes pictures say more than 1,000 words. Here is one:

The U.S. Democratic Party Needs To Get Their Act Together

As I said before in my blog post, democracy works best when competent, common sense politicians in at least two opposing parties compete with each other for votes and approval from citizens.

It is always the opposition party’s responsibility to set an example and to demonstrate that they are capable to do a better job!

The Democratic Party of the U.S. has been in a deep crisis for many years now and therefore the political system of the U.S. tremendously suffers.

Very Incomplete Six Core Beliefs Of Conservatism

Posted: 7/10/2018

Just received by e-mail the Six Core Beliefs of Conservatism thanks to the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (Motto: Education for liberty).

The Six Core Beliefs of Conservatism excerpted from Russell Kirk (“The following is excerpted from The Essential Russell Kirk, a collection of his finest essays and writings.”)

The funny thing is that the word liberty is mentioned only once, words like freedom or free society a total of 2. Individual liberty is conspicuously absent from this document.
Very regrettable! Very disappointing! One of the biggest mistakes conservatives can make!

Friedrich Hayek wrote a famous essay titled “Why I am not a conservative”, which is part of his book titled “The Constitution of Liberty” (originally published 1960). A few appropriate excerpts from this essay here (emphasis added):
  1. “The tug of war between conservatives and progressives can only affect the speed, not the direction, of contemporary developments. But, though there is need for a “brake on the vehicle of progress,” I personally cannot be content with simply helping to apply the brake. What the liberal must ask, first of all, is not how fast or how far we should move, but where we should move. In fact, he differs much more from the collectivist radical of today than does the conservative.”
  2. “But, as the socialists have for a long time been able to pull harder, the conservatives have tended to follow the socialist rather than the liberal direction and have adopted at appropriate intervals of time those ideas made respectable by radical propaganda ”
  3. “This brings me to the first point on which the conservative and the liberal dispositions differ radically. As has often been acknowledged by conservative writers, one of the fundamental traits of the conservative attitude is a fear of change, a timid distrust of the new as such, while the liberal position is based on courage and confidence, on a preparedness to let change run its course even if we cannot predict where it will lead.”

FDA Drug Approval Process Is Deeply Flawed

Posted: 7/10/2018

Vicious Cycle Of Government Intervention Since 1906

If you need an example of an almost ideal/stylized, but unfortunately, all too real vicious cycle of excessive government intervention just take the official history of drug approval by the U.S. Food And Drug Administration.

The only positive entry I could find perusing this history was: “1905 The American Medical Association (AMA) begins a voluntary program of drug approval that would last until 1955. In order to advertise in the AMA and related journals, drug companies must show proof that the drug will treat what they claim”. Without the vicious cycle of government interventions, we would probably have a much better system of private, voluntary drug testing and approval.

Thalidomide 1962

First, I am not a doctor nor am I medically trained etc.

The Thalidomide scandal of 1962 and its aftermath is a great example of a highly irrational, overreaction by our elected representatives that was never corrected. Thalidomide apparently has been an important drug. It is still used today.

In the U.S., the Thalidomide disaster was prevented thanks to “FDA inspector Frances Kelsey, who prevented the drug’s approval within the United States despite pressure from the pharmaceutical company and FDA supervisors. Kelsey felt the application for thalidomide contained incomplete and insufficient data on its safety and effectiveness. Among her concerns was the lack of data indicating whether the drug could cross the placenta, which provides nourishment to a developing fetus.” (emphasis added)

So what actually caused the breakdown of safety tests and approval for this drug? The sources below do not really tell.

It was approved as an over the counter drug in 1957 in Germany on the safety claims of the maker (what?). Did any German health authorities then approve this drug? Why was this drug so quickly promoted and sold as a morning sickness treatment for pregnant women (on the claims of the maker that it was safe for pregnant women as well)?

“Between 1958 and 1960 it was introduced in 46 different countries worldwide”. How was that possible that this drug was so fast approved and marketed worldwide?

“Around this time [1960?], Australian obstetrician Dr. William McBride discovered that the drug also alleviated morning sickness. He started recommending this off-label use of the drug to his pregnant patients, setting a worldwide trend. ” Did nobody verify this claim?

Apparently, highly advanced countries like the UK had inadequate government drug approval procedures in place up to 1962. How come?

“Until Thalidomide tragedy, the drugs were being sold by notification to health authority and NO safety, efficacy or quality data were required to be submitted prior marketing.” This was the sorry, troubling state of affairs in Western Europe.

Since The Thalidomide Scandal Drug Efficacy Needs Approval

Before Thalidomide (1962), the FDA drug approval process was only concerned with drug safety. Then, U.S. legislators rushed to pass the so called the Kefauver Harris Amendment (a.k.a. Drug Efficacy Amendment), which required drug efficacy as well. We still suffer from this incredibly misguided and short-sighted decision! This was certainly not the “finest achievement in consumer protection”, rather the opposite or everything else!

How Many Lives Were Shorted!

We will perhaps never find out how many lives were shortened since the the drug efficacy requirement came into effect in the U.S. However, I bet many more people were prematurely killed or harmed then by Thalidomide, because new and safe drugs were not speedily approved based on safety alone.

Justice Sotomayor Is Terribly Incompetent

Posted: 7/7/2018

Trigger

Just watched this very brief excerpt of a CBC 60 Minutes interview with Justice Sonia Sotomayor (this video is less than 3 minutes long, but very revealing). This video was apparently posted by CBC itself with the caption “Constitution: A living document or not?”

I was truly stunned about Sotomayor’s utter incompetence as one of the highest judges of the land. Sotomayor chose this very peculiar example of “Quartering of Soldiers” to express or defend that the U.S. Constitution is a living document. She deserves an F grade for that.

Analysis

  1. Bet, she has very carefully and deliberately selected the “Quartering of Soldiers” example. Presumably, there is a very low probability of any case coming any time soon before the U.S. Supreme Court dealing with this aspect
  2. However, she did not at all understand that the Founders and Framers wrote this particular protection of citizens and their homes in the constitution, because in the past this is what happened frequently, not least by the British colonial powers
  3. She did not understand or appreciate that this protection was granted to citizens even in the event or in the face of war powers of government
  4. One can also conclude from this particular amendment that the protection of your home was of paramount importance to the founders and framers. As a general principle, government powers should be considerably limited even in war times. That is a lesson, Sotomayor completely failed to grasp

How LGBT Propaganda Undermines Science

Posted: 7/6/2018

Trigger

I have liked the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) on Facebook some time ago. Since then, I had seen rarely any posting from EMBL or perhaps even none. However, on July 2nd, 2018, the EMBL posts following:
For #LGBTSTEMday this week we've decided to make ourselves a bit more colourful...

I have immediately responded with following comment: “What the heck is this! I expect science not propaganda! You are wasting taxpayer money! You are disqualified!”

Some discussion ensued and EMBL posted we have community guidelines. Debate is encouraged but personal attacks, trolling and abuse will not be tolerated

Well, unfortunately the EMBL does not have policies to prevent propaganda from being posted on their official Facebook page.

At Issue

When a leading scientific institution elevates and celebrates the cause of the lifestyles of a minority of scientists, then this is propaganda and not science and taxpayers pay for it. How often does the EMBL e.g. celebrate heterosexual weeks?

I suspect or I am afraid, such Facebook postings are only possible, because there is a determined, well organized circle of this lifestyle minority of scientists inside this institution (perhaps even at higher levels of leadership and administration), using this institution to further their cause.

I am afraid, this also opens the door for self dealing and corruption like the much despised old boy network (clique; German: Seilschaft). Now it is the LGBT club.

Not only former U.S. President Obama set a terrible example when he lit up the White House in rainbow colors following a U.S. Supreme Court decision.

On Omnigenetics: Futile?

Posted: 7/5/2018

Trigger

Recently, I read this article in the Quanta Magazine: Theory Suggests That All Genes Affect Every Complex Trait. Here is the full text of what I believe is the underlying scientific article: An Expanded View of Complex Traits: From Polygenic to Omnigenic

Omni

If you do not know much about a subject, but you want to impress, then use the prefix omni. Sounds omnipotent, but it is probably more impotent than thought.

Since environmentalism became en vogue in the 1960s and 1970s, we were to believe that everything depends on everything. From Chaos theory, we learnt that a single flap of a butterfly wing in China (or was it a tipped over rice bag) can trigger a hurricane over the Carribean Ocean (to paraphrase; an exaggeration).

Whether this kind of thinking advances science is the question.
