Protists might help control gut bacteria and support a healthy immune system

Amazing stuff! This seems to be still preliminary research.

"Protists could be more useful than thought
Single-celled organisms called protists might help control gut bacteria and support a healthy immune system. The organisms have long been considered parasites and treated with antibiotics to kill them. “Medical school told physicians that we shouldn’t have them,” ...
But new research is finding that common organisms such as Blastocystis can outcompete harmful bacteria in the body and, in some cases, produce compounds that affect the immune system. Adding protists to fecal matter transplants for various gut diseases might improve the treatments’ efficacy."

Single-celled organisms set for greater role in gut health (behind paywall) "Long cast as villains, some protists, such as Blastocystis, are potentially beneficial to human health."

Single-celled organisms such as the protist Tritrichomonas musculus can interfere with normal gut microbes.
