“Going flat”: rethinking life after mastectomy

Recommendable!

Unfortunately, the article does not cover the age of the women nor whether they are single or not. What about the partners, companions, spouses, or relatives of these women?

I don't like it at all when women are referred to as "people". This is an ideological misnomer if not worse!

"A growing number of women are choosing to forgo breast reconstruction after mastectomy — opting instead to live flat-chested. Yet until recently, their experiences remained largely underrepresented.

That’s changing, thanks to new research from Flinders University that lifts the voices of 460 Australian women who chose “flat closure”, either unilaterally or bilaterally.

The study found 92% of respondents were happy with their decision to “go flat”. But many also reported feeling pressured by medical professionals to reconstruct, with one in four saying they were second-guessed — even after surgery. A third felt their healthcare team was biased towards reconstruction. ..."

From the abstract:
"Thousands of Australian women undergo mastectomy to treat or reduce the risk of breast cancer each year. At this challenging time, women often rely on their healthcare professionals for guidance and support.
The option of flat closure surgery, or ‘going flat’, may be downplayed, discouraged, or absent from discussions women have with healthcare professionals.
Women, by necessity or choice, look for information and support about going flat—and living flat— outside of their healthcare providers. Written materials, online resources, and support groups are frequently sought by women. Yet, there is a lack of Australian-specific sources.
Most women who have undergone flat closure surgery are satisfied with their decision."

Going Flat After Mastectomy "Many people [???] choose to go flat or live flat after mastectomy to remove one or both breasts rather than have surgery with tissue flaps or implants."
