Faraday-caged drone successfully triggers and directs lightning strikes

Amazing stuff!

What else can drones do? A question posed by Benjamin Franklin posthumously! Just kidding!

"In a world first, Japanese researchers flew a lightning-proof drone in a thunderstorm, using it to induce and direct natural lightning strikes. The team is now working on how this flying lightning rod might capture and store lightning energy. ..."

"Key highlights:
  • This is the first time in the world that a drone has been successful in inducing and guiding lightning using electric field fluctuations.
  • We devised a design method for a lightning-resistant cage that will prevent drones from malfunctioning or breaking down even if they are hit directly by lightning, and that can be installed on drones in the city, and demonstrated this using natural lightning.
  • In the future, we hope to use this flying lightning rod to protect cities and infrastructure, aiming for a society with zero lightning damage.
