What a great CO2 recycling process! Just recycle atmospheric CO2 and stop worrying!
By the way, why don't we just plant some more trees to recycle CO2 and stop the hysteria and alarmism! Global warming is a hoax and climate change is a religion!
"For many years, researchers have been working to build devices that can mimic photosynthesis—the process by which plants use sunlight and carbon dioxide to make their fuel. These artificial leaves use sunlight to separate water into oxygen and hydrogen, which could then be used to fuel cars or generate electricity. Now a research team from the University of Cambridge has taken aim at creating more energy-dense fuels.
The group’s device produces ethylene and ethane, proving that artificial leaves can create hydrocarbons. The development could offer a cheaper, cleaner way to make fuels, chemicals, and plastics—with the ultimate goal of creating fuels that don’t leave a harmful carbon footprint after they’re burned."
"... To accomplish this feat, the researchers introduced a few innovations. The first was to use a specialized catalyst made up of tiny flower-like copper structures, produced in the lab of coauthor Peidong Yang at the University of California, Berkeley. On one side of the device, electrons accumulated on the surfaces of these nanoflowers. These electrons were then used to convert carbon dioxide and water into a range of molecules including ethylene and ethane, hydrocarbons that each contain two carbon atoms. ..."
From the abstract:
"Photoelectrochemistry (PEC) presents a direct pathway to solar fuel synthesis by integrating light absorption and catalysis into compact electrodes. Yet, PEC hydrocarbon production remains elusive due to high catalytic overpotentials and insufficient semiconductor photovoltage.
Here we demonstrate ethane and ethylene synthesis by interfacing lead halide perovskite photoabsorbers with suitable copper nanoflower electrocatalysts. The resulting perovskite photocathodes attain a 9.8% Faradaic yield towards C2 hydrocarbon production at 0 V against the reversible hydrogen electrode. The catalyst and perovskite geometric surface areas strongly influence C2 photocathode selectivity, which indicates a role of local current density in product distribution. The thermodynamic limitations of water oxidation are overcome by coupling the photocathodes to Si nanowire photoanodes for glycerol oxidation. These unassisted perovskite–silicon PEC devices attain partial C2 hydrocarbon photocurrent densities of 155 µA cm−2, 200-fold higher than conventional perovskite–BiVO4 artificial leaves for water and CO2 splitting. These insights establish perovskite semiconductors as a versatile platform towards PEC multicarbon synthesis."
Cambridge research team reaches EU ‘Fuel from the Sun’ Final with artificial leaves capable of producing a sustainable solar fuel (original news release) "Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a system of artificial leaves that use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into a synthetic fuel known as syngas. Their scaled-up demonstrator system, built for the final of the European Union’s ‘Fuel from the Sun’ competition, showed potential for the production of syngas under real-world conditions."
