Why is President Trump challenging the birthright citizenship?

Update of 1/28/2025: In my view, references to the slave issue are a red herring to argue for messing with the birthright.

Update of 1/27/2025: What about babies born in the US to illegal immigrants? This is perhaps the strongest argument.

Section 1 of the 14th Amendment is very clear: "All persons born ... in the United States ... are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. ..."

So what is the point given the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence? Sure enough, 250 years ago North America was largely unpopulated, but now the US has a population far exceeding 300 million.

May I speculate, he actually wants to reinforce and permanently settle any doubts about this constitutional right to prevent anymore future challenges. Irrespective of his motives, if this challenge goes on the US Supreme Court may weigh in and confirm the 14th Amendment.

Why would Trump pick a fight over this and most likely cause unnecessary and vehement opposition and divisiveness?

P.S. Lest we forget, Trump's wife Melania is also an immigrant.
