Being a police officer in the U.S. certainly qualifies as a dangerous job! Any encounter with a suspect or a person of interest could turn out to become life threatening to the police officer. As a police officer you do not know whether you are not the next one being shot at.

There are over 700,000 police officers (with power to arrest) in the U.S. (Source).

"... The National Fraternal Order of Police, a national police group with nearly 400,000 members, released the report, which showed 378 officers were shot in the line of duty in 2023, up 14% from the previous year, when 330 were shot.

Of the 378 shot this year, 46 died from their injuries. ..."
