On The Ospedale della Pieta

Posted: 8/18/2019

The citizens of the Western World are fooled on a daily basis to believe that the emergence and enormous expansion of the welfare state in Western countries since about the late 19th century is a great achievement and a great benefit to society. The opposite is closer to the truth! The welfare state is a huge power grab by government and represents an enormous subjugation of its citizens!

“The Ospedale della Pietà was a convent, orphanage, and music school in Venice. Like other Venetian ospedali, the Pietà was first established as a hospice for the needy. A group of Venetian nuns, called the Consorelle di Santa Maria dell’Umiltà, established this charitable institution for orphans and abandoned girls in the fourteenth century. ...

Infants could be left at the Pietà via the scaffetta, a window only large enough to admit infants. Not all infants were female, nor were they necessarily orphans. Through the seventeenth century all four of the surviving ospedali gained increasing attention through the performances of sacred music by their female musicians, known as figlie di coro.

By the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the Pietà - along with the three other charitable Ospedali Grandi - was well known for its all-female musical ensembles that attracted tourists and patrons from around Europe” (S1; emphasis added)

None other than the great Antonio Vivaldi was engaged by the Pieta for many years of his active live: “The composer Antonio Vivaldi was appointed a violin teacher in 1703 and served in various roles through 1715, and again from 1723 to 1740. Much of Vivaldi's sacred vocal and instrumental music was written for performance at the Pietà.” (S1; emphasis added)

The Ospedale della Pieta was not an isolated case. There were many institutions like it all over Europe. Many of them probably forgotten.

One Of The Most Famous And Least Known U.S. Political Speeches

Posted: 8/18/2019

It is one of those speeches most past and present politicians never want you to learn about!

If I had to choose between the much too famous and very overrated Lincoln’s Gettyburg address and Crockett’s little known “ Not Yours To Give ” speech, I gladly take the latter! I have intentionally picked the Gettysburg Address, because, as I have argued here in my blog, to me President Lincoln and the totally unnecessary American Civil War is probably the best identifiable point in time in U.S. history when Big Government first clearly emerged and after which it expanded ever since.

The David Crockett reportedly gave this speech in the U.S. House of Representatives and it is recapitulated in Chapter 8 “A sensible and timely view of a certain constitutional question”, p. 137-140 of a book by Edward Sylvester Ellis (see S1; emphasis added). The speech is believed to be given by David Crockett on 4/22/1828 (S3). Unfortunately, speeches in the U.S. House of Representation were not officially transcribed at that time to my understanding.

Here is finally the speech by David Crockett (emphasis added):
“I was one day in the lobby of the House of Representatives when a bill was taken up appropriating money for the benefit of a widow of a distinguished naval officer [Stephen Decatur]. Several beautiful speeches had been made in its support, rather, as I thought, because it affords the speakers a fine opportunity for display than from the necessity to convince anybody, for it seemed to me that everybody favored it. The Speaker was just about to put the question when Davy Crockett arose:

“Mr. Speaker–I have as much respect for the memory of the deceased, and as much sympathy for the sufferings of the living, if suffering there be, as any man in this House, but we must not permit our respect for the dead or our sympathy for a part of the living to lead us into an act of injustice to the balance of the living. I will not go into an argument to prove that Congress has no power to appropriate this money as an act of charity. Every member upon this floor knows it. We have the right, as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; but as members of Congress we have no right so to appropriate a dollar of the public money. Some eloquent appeals have been made to us upon the ground that it is a debt due the deceased Mr. Speaker, the deceased lived long after the close of the war; he was in office to the day of his death, and I have never heard that the government was in arrears to him. This government can owe no debts but for services rendered , and at a stipulated price. If it is a debt, how much is it? Has it been audited, and the amount due ascertained? If it is a debt this is not the place to present it for payment, or have its merits examined. If it is a debt we owe more than we can ever hope to pay , for we owe the widow of every soldier of the war of 1812 precisely the same amount. There is a woman in my neighborhood , the widow as gallant a man who ever shouldered a musket. He fell in battle. She is as good in every respect as this lady, and is as poor. She is earning her daily bread by her daily labor, and if I were to introduce a bill to appropriate five or ten thousand dollars for her benefit , I should be laughed at, and my bill would not get five votes in this House. There are thousands of widows in this country just such as the one I have spoken of; but we never hear of any of these large debts to them. Sir, this is no debt. The government did not owe to the deceased when he was alive; it could not contract it after he died. I do not wish to be rude, but I must be plain.

Every man in this House knows it is not a debt. We cannot, without the grossest corruption, appropriate this money as the payment of a debt. We have not the semblance of authority to appropriate it as a charity . Mr. Speaker, I have said we have the right to give as much money of our own as we please. I am the poorest man on this floor. I cannot vote for this bill, but I will give one week’s pay to the object, and if every member of Congress will do the same, it will amount to more than the bill asks.”

The book continuous: “He took his seat. Nobody replied. The bill was put upon its passage, and, instead of passing unanimously, as was generally supposed, and as, no doubt, it would, but for that speech, it received but few votes, and, of course, was lost.” (S1; emphasis added)

One may add that the widow of Stephen Decatur was very persistent: “Decatur's widow, Susan, tried for several years to receive a pension from the U.S. Government. By an act of Congress on March 3, 1837, she was granted a pension retroactive to Decatur's death.” (S5; emphasis added) So by 1837, the U.S. Congress had already forgotten the speech given by David Crocket (unfortunately never officially transcribed)!
It is also important to note in this context that Stephen Decatur did not die while in service, but in a duel. Decatur had no good reason to accept this particular duel from a naval officer he had court-martialed (that is another story)!

Even if Edvard Sylvester Ellis completely invented this speech it does not affect or diminish its tremendous  importance! What is the importance of this speech :
  1. An early and strong rebuke of the coming welfare state
  2. Crocket exposed the many silly ways our elected representatives would abuse taxpayers’ money
  3. Emphasis on individual responsibility and to set a personal example for charity. If you give to a charitable cause, others will follow

Although little known, this speech deserves to be right up there with other, famous orations like the famous Pericles’ Funeral Oration

P.S. The same chapter (i.e. XIII) of the book (S1) contains more very interesting discussions about the U.S. Constitution following the Not Yours To Give speech. It turns out that Crocket learnt from a previous mistake! Here are more excerpts (emphasis added):
“Well, Colonel [Crockett] where in the Constitution do you find any authority to give away the public money in charity”
It is not the amount, Colonel, that I complain of; it is the principle. In the first place, the Government ought to have in the Treasury no more than enough for its legitimate purposes. … The power of collecting and disbursing money at pleasure is the most dangerous power that can be intrusted to man … there is not a man in the United States who can ever guess how much he pays to the government. So you see, so while you [member of the U.S. Congress] are contributing to relieve one you are drawing it from the thousands who are even worse off than he. … If you have the right to give to one, you have the right to give to all; and, as the Constitution neither defines charity nor stipulates the amount, you are at liberty to give to any and everything which you may believe, or profess to believe, is a charity, and to any amount you may think proper. You will very easily perceive what a wide door this would open for fraud and corruption and favoritism, on the one hand, and for robbing the people on the other. No Colonel, Congress has no right to give charity. Individual members [of the U.S. Congress] may give as much of their own money as they please, but they have no right to touch a dollar of the public money for that purpose. … So you see, Colonel, you have violated the Constitution in what I consider a vital point. It is a precedent fraught with danger to the country, for when Congress once begins to stretch its power beyond the limits of the Constitution, there is no limit to it, and no security for the people. I have no doubt you acted honestly, but that does not make it any better, except as far as you are personally concerned, and you see that I cannot vote for you”

Unfortunately, the United States has come along way to abandon those sound principles!

Missing Internet Mathematics Encyclopedia

Posted: 8/17/2019  Update: 10/7/2019

Update Of 10/7/2019

I was remiss not to mention what is perhaps the most extensive and most professional encyclopedia of mathematics on the Internet: https://www.encyclopediaofmath.org by Springer in collaboration with the European Mathematical Society. However, this encyclopedia is tough reading for non experts!

There is, of course, also the Wofram MathWorld. However, the entries are very terse and concise. It is excellent for a quick refresher or lookup, but not great for understanding. It is also quite challenging for math laypeople, I imagine.

Original Post

Ever wondered why there is still no great, exclusively focused Wikipedia of Math available on the Internet? Wikipedia articles on math subjects are, unfortunately, of very varying quality!

Math is so important for and to humanity that it certainly deserves a first class and high quality website on the Internet!

What would be some desirable properties of such a website (not in any particular order):
  1. Curated by some of the leading math societies and mathematicians of this planet
  2. Presenting math both in the usual abstract form and also practical with examples. All math should also then be explained in easily understandable layman terms
  3. Math should be made accessible through different means and approaches
  4. Plenty of inviting self study curricula or topics should be available
  5. Very important would be the historical background and how math evolved over the centuries. The history of math should be well integrated into all aspects of the website. The historical background often helps to understand where we are now in math
  6. Math and statistics should be well integrated throughout the website

As far as I am concerned, I am suffering every day from the fact that there is no such website available as I have endeavored to study AI and machine learning on my own.

Caveat: An excellent math encyclopedia on the Internet may very well make lots of math professors and teachers unemployed. Well explained math is not only fun, but also not very difficult to understand. Like alchemists, the high priests of math (e.g. professors and teachers) have artificially cloaked math with their jargon into something so that  the uninitiated majority of people are to only marvel at math like the pyramids of Gizeh

Don't Blame Mental Illness For Mass Shootings Nonsense!

Posted: 8/15/2019

I was truly shocked today when I read this lousy editorial (S1) published in the Science journal of the American Association For The Advancement Of Science (AAIS) written by a “former deputy director and acting director of the National Institute of Mental Health at the NIH”, i.e. Alan I. Leshner.

This editorial is full of obvious junk science and highly politicized science coming from the association for the advancement of science! Truly appalling!

It is a well known fact that many of the mass shooters in the U.S. over the last several decades were obviously and severely mentally ill perpetrators at the time of their mass murder. I have blogged here several times about mass shootings and its association with severe mental illness (e.g. here, here, here). Unfortunately, in too many cases, I am afraid, it was never even researched whether the perpetrator was mentally ill or not.

In his editorial “Stop blaming illness”, the author gets it wrong quite a few times (emphasis added):
  1. Worst of all he, in his last paragraph, favors a law passed in 2019 by the Dimocratic Party dominated U.S. House of Representatives to allocate more money for “firearm violence”. The usual big red herring! I call that politicized science or junk science!
  2. He downplays mental illness as “regrettably, a rather loosely defined and loosely used term, and this contributes to the problem”. This is rather strange coming from a former director of the National Institute of Mental Health. Seems to be quite symptomatic of the very regrettable state of mental illness research in the U.S. for which he was responsible too!
  3. “According to the National Council for Behavioral Health, the best estimates are that individuals with mental illnesses are responsible for less than 4% of all violent crimes in the United States”. What an absurd and misleading quote of statistics. This is very lousy Mr. Leshner. You ought to be ashamed! Mass shootings are not some violent crime!
  4. Mr. Leshner blames “Unfortunately, it has been difficult to determine precisely the causes of mass shootings and the appropriate approaches to preventing them, largely because of a dearth of public funding for this line of research.” How much has Mr. Leshner done throughout his professional career to convince legislators that more money was needed?
  5. If, to Mr. Leshner’s credit, he was trying to make the point that many mentally ill people are harmless and would never commit a mass shooting in their lifetime, he totally failed with this piece!

The Absurdity Of Plastic Bans

Posted: 8/14/2019

Today, I saw this article on Bloomberg News: Coke Putting Dasani Water in Cans Amid Backlash Against Plastic (8/13/19). “Coke will start selling [aluminum] canned Dasani in the U.S. Northeast next month, with plans to expand the product to other parts of the country in 2020. The announcement comes after PepsiCo Inc. said recently it would experiment with selling Aquafina, its mainstream water brand, in cans at restaurants and stadiums.” (emphasis added)
If this headline does not express the whole absurdity of plastic bans, what does!

How much energy does aluminum production require? How many tons of additional aluminum containing minerals have to be mined if this switch is implemented on a global scale?

Superlubricity Or Superconductivity Or Both

Posted: 8/12/2019

We have been waiting for superconductivity at room temperature to become reality for decades. Scientists are constantly making significant advances in this direction. There is a good chance to achieve it within the next 10-20 years in my estimation.

Lately, research progress on superlubricity (frictionless surfaces and motion) has become more impressive as well (see e.g. S1). “Predicted [only] in the 1980s and 1990s, structural superlubricity was first conclusively spotted and reported in 2004, when researchers showed that the ease with which a graphite flake slides over another graphite surface depended strongly on its orientation: At certain rotation angles, friction dropped to next to nothing, the team noted in Physical Review Letters.” (S1; emphasis added)

Just to give an idea of the enormity: “It’s estimated that a third of the energy that goes into powering fossil fuel–[engine] cars is lost to friction, converted into other forms of energy like heat and sound.” (S1; emphasis added). Just imagine e.g. car tires (coefficient of friction of 1) had a lot less friction on the road, huge amounts of energy could be saved daily.

If anyone of these two, i.e. superconductivity or superlubricity, could be achieved, or better, both, we would be having an unprecedented energy revolution

Rising Mercury In Fish Alarmism

Posted: 8/9/2019

This week an alarming sounding research article was spread in the usual media (news and science outlets) and on Facebook! As usual, the gullible authors totally uncritically regurgitated the news.

We are inundated with such scary introductions like “Add another item to the ever-growing list of the dangerous impacts of global climate change: ” (S4)

These articles are huge baloney. The underlying scientific article (S3) is most likely junk science or deeply flawed science:
Articles like S1, S2, and S4 do not mention the amount of HG found in the sampled fish, they only talk about percentage increases. Using percentage increases is a very old technique of statistical manipulation!
One of the articles (S2) at least reproduces a chart from the underlying scientific article (S3) showing an increase in methylmercury (MeHG) from roughly 750 to 1000 nanogram per gram. The preview of S3 displays two charts showing tissue methylmercury of roughly between 70 and 150 nanogram per gram for one fish species and between 0 and 130 nanograms per gram
None of the articles (cannot confirm S3) mentions whether the minuscule nanogram amounts found in sampled fish is even hazardous for human consumption or the food chain
The underlying scientific article (S3) heavily relies on model simulations not on hard facts and measurements. We know how easily such models are manipulated for fame and money. My impression is that these model simulations are based on correlations, most likely without proving causation.
One of the hypotheses the researchers offered why the mercury in these fish were increasing is that due to the warming ocean these fish would consume more calories (food) like “Michael Phelps”. I am not kidding! If this is not junk science, what is! (S1)
None of the blaring, alarming headlines mentions that the study had an extremely narrow focus, which basically prohibits any generalization! “The researchers analyzed 30 years of ecosystem data from the Gulf of Maine, including an extensive analysis of the stomach contents of two marine predators, Atlantic cod and spiny dogfish, from the 1970s to 2000s.” (S1)

What are the affiliations of these researchers: “Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, Harvard University; Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University; … ; Fisheries and Oceans Canada, St Andrews Biological Station”

Sources (S):
  1. Mercury levels in fish are on the rise (8/7/2019; Harvard Gazette)
  2. Climate change and overfishing increase neurotoxicant in marine predators (8/7/2019; original article in Nature; preview only, behind paywall)

Papyrus Reading Instead Of Psychic Reading

Posted: 8/2/2019

If you happen to live in the U.S. you will come across the psychic reader service in many metro areas of the U.S. I do not claim to be an expert on this service. Well some psychic reader definitely go the extra mile to show off their service to attract customers.

This psychic reader was discovered in the Paradise Valley Mall of Phoenix, Arizona:

In light of this, perhaps the owners of this shopping mall should consider renaming their mall into something like the Valley of the Kings Mall (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_of_the_Kings; just kidding)
