To create deep fakes is a very old technology! It has been done with photos for way over a hundred years!
What is different now? Today, it can be done much more easily and very deceptively using images or video by almost anyone choosing any person and creatively associating the person with any situation (e.g. pornography).
Where to draw the line is the question? First of all, the exaggerated hysteria and emotions about the deep fakes need to dial down to find reasonable solutions!
Some reasonable approaches to consider:
- Common sense and natural skepticism are advised
- Identifying deep fakes is probably a good start.
- Allowing victims of e.g. defamatory deepfakes to have them legally removed from distribution and public view is another.
- Deepfakes should probably be more judged by their intentions and motivations e.g. propaganda & demagoguery, incitement of violence.
- Make tools available to individuals so they can make their own judgments about deepfakes.
