"Dragon Man" May Replace Neanderthal as Our Closest Relative

Is this not an interesting coincidence that the Communist Party of China just celebrates its 100th anniversary, while three research papers come out in June 2021 to claim that "Dragon Man" is closer to H. sapiens than the "Neanderthal"?

Is the CPC making some supremacy claims for ancient hominids who lived in the area what is now China?

I am skeptical to attach so much importance to a single skull! However, this seems to be quite common in paleoanthropology!

"... The single cranium used to describe the species—the largest of any hominin and remarkably well-preserved for being at least 146,000 years old—has a murky history that some experts say limits what conclusions can be drawn about it, but it does add to anthropologists’ understanding of human evolution in Asia during the latter half of the middle Pleistocene, an important period in human expansion.

“We got such an amazing, complete cranium, and it provided very important information for us to understand the evolution of Homo as a genus,” says Xijun Ni, a paleoanthropologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a coauthor of all three studies. “Previously, we thought the Neanderthal is the sister lineage of H. sapiens, but now we find that Homo longi and other members of this lineage are actually closer to Homo sapiens than Neanderthals are.” ...
The third study is a first stab at working H. longi into human evolution. The authors created a new phylogenetic tree for the Homo lineage using 95 fossils and more than 600 measurements and morphological traits and modeled the presumed biogeographic migrations of different groups during the Pleistocene. The resulting tree confirmed that the Harbin cranium, along with other fossils from the Harbin group, constitute a monophyletic sister lineage with H. sapiens, pushing the time when modern humans and Neanderthals last shared a common ancestor back 400,000 more years and displacing them as our most recent ancestor. ..."

Research advances one step closer to stem cell therapy for type 1 diabetes

Good news!

"... In a study published on June 7, 2021, in the journal Nature Communications, the investigators reported that they have developed a new way to create beta cells that is much more efficient than previous methods. Additionally, when these beta cells were tested in a mouse model of type 1 diabetes, the animals’ blood sugar was brought under control within about two weeks. ...
Producing beta cells from hPSCs in the lab is not new, but in the past the yields of these precious cells have been low. With existing methods, only about 10 to 40 percent of cells become beta cells. By comparison, techniques used to create nerve cells from hPSCs have yields of about 80 percent. Another issue is that if undifferentiated cells are left in the mix, they could eventually turn into another kind cell that would be unwanted. ...
To address the problem, the researchers took a stepwise approach to create beta cells. They identified several chemicals that are important for inducing hPSCs to become more specialized cells. They ultimately identified several cocktails of chemicals that resulted in beta cell yields of up to 80 percent. ..."

"... To address these issues, we first devised a strategy to efficiently cluster hPSC-derived pancreatic progenitors into 3D structures. Through a systematic study, we discovered 10 chemicals that not only retain the pancreatic progenitors in 3D clusters but also enhance their potentiality towards NKX6.1+/INS+ β cells. We further systematically screened signaling pathway modulators in the three steps from pancreatic progenitors toward β cells. The implementation of all these strategies and chemical combinations resulted in generating β cells from different sources of hPSCs with high efficiency. ..."

Why the Fourth of July Belongs to Thomas Jefferson by Lawrence Reed

Recommendable! It contains some great quotes of Thomas Jefferson!

Where are the Founding Fathers and Mothers of our time? Only in rare moments of history do so many great minds meet in one place as around the time of the Declaration of Independence! Each one outdoing the other one!

Yes, Thomas Jefferson was a slaveholder of several hundred slaves. However, how did he treat his slaves? Was he cruel or was he humane?

"“A free people claim their rights as derived from the laws of nature, and not as the gift of their chief magistrate”"

"“The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere”"

"“I had rather be shut up in a very modest cottage with my books, my family and a few old friends, dining on simple bacon, and letting the world roll on as it liked, than to occupy the most splendid post, which any human power can give”"

"“Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty”"

"“I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man"

"“A wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government"

Ukraine Inks Infrastructure Deal with China After Biden Snubs Zelensky for Putin

This looks like another huge foreign policy blunder by the demented and senile 46th President!

"... Ukraine has been a partner in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a global infrastructure debt trap program, since at least 2018, when China established a BRI “promotion center” in the country. ...
The Zelensky administration’s abrupt shift in attitude towards Chinese investment follows the president’s condemnation of American counterpart Joe Biden last month for failing to impose sanctions on Russia’s Nordstream 2 fuel pipeline. ...
Biden rejected an urgent request from Zelensky to meet in person prior to his summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on June 16. Shortly after meeting Putin, Washington, DC, publications began to report that Biden had chosen to freeze lethal aid to Ukraine, pivotal in the eastern Donbass war against Russian allied militias. ..."

Ukraine Inks Infrastructure Deal with China After Biden Snubs Zelensky for Putin Chinese government media outlets confirmed Sunday that Beijing’s Ministry of Commerce had recently signed a reportedly expansive deal to invest in nationwide infrastructure in Ukraine, following the latter’s decision not to co-sign a statement at the United Nations condemning China for committing genocide.

Chinese scientists deleted key data that could help identify origins of COVID-19

Very recommendable! Long and detailed article! Very disturbing story! I think, the article errs when it claims that the recovered virus samples do not support the lab leak hypothesis, when in fact they indicate a bat virus origin possibly tracing back to the now infamous Wuhan Institute of Virology.

"... The recovered virus samples do not support either the "lab leak" hypothesis or the "natural origins" hypothesis of the origins of SARS-CoV-2, according to scientists who have examined the paper. But these scientists say it does suggest the virus was spreading in Wuhan earlier than the Chinese government claimed, and ... findings should reinforce skepticism that China has fully shared all relevant data on COVID-19. ...
But when [the researcher] went to the SRA [NIH's Sequence Read Archive] to examine the Chinese sequences, he found the data had been deleted. He explained in his paper that the SRA "is designed as a permanent archive of deep sequencing data." The only circumstances under which data can be removed is if the original researchers make an email request to have it deleted, provide reasons for doing so, and have that request approved by SRA staff. ...

A spokesperson for the NIH told the Telegraph that the NIH had "reviewed the submitting investigator's request to withdraw the data" in June 2020 and subsequently removed it.
"The requestor indicated the sequence information had been updated, was being submitted to another database, and wanted the data removed from SRA to avoid version control issues," the spokesperson said. "Submitting investigators hold the rights to their data and can request withdrawal of the data."
[The researcher] attempted to contact the Wuhan University researchers asking why they requested the data be deleted but did not receive a response. ...
Fortunately, he was able to recover some of the data from the Google Cloud, obtaining 34 early positive COVID-19 samples, and he was able to reconstruct partial viral sequences from 13 of them. ..."

"The origin and early spread of SARS-CoV-2 remains shrouded in mystery. Here I identify a data set containing SARS-CoV-2 sequences from early in the Wuhan epidemic that has been deleted from the NIH’s Sequence Read Archive. I recover the deleted files from the Google Cloud, and reconstruct partial sequences of 13 early epidemic viruses. Phylogenetic analysis of these sequences in the context of carefully annotated existing data further supports the idea that the Huanan Seafood Market sequences are not fully representative of the viruses in Wuhan early in the epidemic. Instead, the progenitor of currently known SARS-CoV-2 sequences likely contained three mutations relative to the market viruses that made it more similar to SARS-CoV-2’s bat coronavirus relatives."

Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s Legacy of Liberty by Lawrence Reed

Very recommendable!

"... An earlier case [of an elected king] involves a fascinating country known as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Its story is largely forgotten outside of Eastern Europe but it deserves to be much better known everywhere.

The Commonwealth spanned 226 years, from 1569 to 1795, as a political union with a single monarch of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Between 11 and 14 million people resided within its borders at its zenith, making it one of Europe’s largest and most populous nations. In terms of political and economic liberty, it was an enlightened country—ahead of its time, in fact. ...
As far back as the 9th Century, Poland’s kings came to power by vote. The electorate, to be sure, consisted not of the masses but of a much smaller nobility. ...
During the two centuries of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, kings were not only elected, but they were also required to agree to the extraordinary Henrician Articles (King Henry’s Articles). The document’s pro-liberty provisions included these:
  1. Election was the only route to the throne, and no children of the elected monarch could inherit the position.
  2. The King could not raise taxes or tariffs, declare war or impose a military draft, without the approval of Parliament, known then as it is today as the Sejm. He couldn’t even get married unless the Sejm signed on (in those days, royal marriages were a foreign policy matter).
  3. ... the King could not rule without endorsement of the Sejm, which he was required to convene at least once every two years for a minimum of six weeks.
  4. The King was compelled to enforce the religious freedom guarantees that made the Commonwealth one of the most tolerant enclaves on the European continent ...
  5. The nobles jealously guarded not only their own positions, but the freedoms of the people more broadly. ... each king had to take an oath that embodied these words: “If anything has been done by us against laws, liberties, privileges or customs, we declare all the inhabitants of the Kingdom are freed from obedience to us.”
... "

Chinese Scientists Produce Genetically Modified Pigs for Human Transplant

Good news! Successful porcine xenotranplantation is coming another step or more closer! Lucky pig charm!

In 2017, eGenesis announced that it had produced the world’s first genetically modified pigs that do not carry endogenous retroviruses, eliminating the risk of virus transmission from pigs to humans; and in 2018, eGenesis produced the first immunoplex-engineered pig, reducing the immune rejection of pig allogeneic organ transplants. ..."

"Xenotransplantation, specifically the use of porcine organs for human transplantation, has long been sought after as an alternative for patients suffering from organ failure. How COVID-19 vaccines were made so quickly without cutting corners

Very recommendable! However, no credit at was given to President Trump! He was not even mentioned once in this article, although without his support and push it would not have happened this fast! This is very disingenuous by the author of this article!

The article explains very convincingly how it was possible to develop the new vaccine so fast by different companies in several countries.

"Driven by a global urgency and underpinned by decades of prior work on vaccine technology, vaccine developers found a way to chop not just days or months, but years off the timeline. What was jettisoned was not the science, or the safety tests, but rather the wait time baked into the development process — waiting for results and waiting for regulatory approvals ...
It began with deciphering the exact genetic makeup of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. By early January 2020, that genetic blueprint was in hand and the first vaccines to test were ready just a few weeks later. ...
Researchers knew to zero in on those [spike] proteins thanks to decades of work studying coronaviruses, including two that have caused other outbreaks of human diseases — SARS and MERS. That work also identified the best form of the protein to use: a stable form just before the virus fuses with a cell it’s about to infect. ...
Scientists had already built these rapid, genetically based templates largely because of the ongoing battle against HIV ...
“plug-and-play” vaccine manufacturing. Decades of trying to attack HIV has created a library of safe [templates] to use quickly against any new would-be viral marauders. ...
One of the templates directly carries a nonfunctional, partial strand of viral mRNA to cells in the body, delivering instructions for those cells to create copies of the protein that the immune system recognizes as foreign. That’s what’s used in the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna shots. ...
The mRNA for the coronavirus’ spike proteins gets packaged inside tiny bubbles of fat called lipid nanoparticles. These tiny fat bubbles have been around for decades and safely used for dozens of other drugs, some approved, others still in the pipeline. ...
Two key therapies — one still in the works and one approved — paved the way for COVID-19 vaccine developers to hit the ground running with RNA-based templates.

One therapy, made by Germany-based CureVac, is the first vaccine to reach human trials that was developed using mRNA to fight an infectious disease. It targets the rabies virus and was injected into human volunteers starting in 2013. Decades earlier, in 1971, researchers developed the first syringefuls that they thought were safe for humans, which they initially tested by injecting themselves. The first version of the mRNA-based rabies vaccine ... did show that the technology was safe. ..."

Scientists reveal how internal biological clock may suppress tumor growth

Good news! Cancer is history!

"Those who engage in long-term, rotational shift work, such as nursing or firefighting, are at increased risk of developing cancer, but the biological roots of this phenomenon have remained largely unknown.
Now, new research ... demonstrates a clear link between the circadian clock and the body’s tumor suppression system, with the potential to accelerate cancer cell growth. ...
the new research shows how mutant forms of the circadian clock gene CRY2 found in human tumors are able to dampen the activity of a key tumor suppressor gene, P53. ...
“This is the first study to investigate point mutations in a core clock gene that have been reported in human cancers,” ... “The impact of these genetic changes on P53 activity is truly remarkable and indicates a striking regulation of tumor suppression by the circadian clock.” ..."

"... The circadian repressors CRY1 and CRY2 evolved from light-activated DNA-repair enzymes, suggesting that they may be involved. Here, we demonstrate that missense mutations in CRY2 reported in The Cancer Genome Atlas suppress P53 target-gene expression and enhance the growth of MYC-transformed fibroblasts. Our identification of point mutations in CRY2 in human tumors that influence P53 activity and cell growth provides evidence for a clinically relevant molecular connection between CRYs and P53. ...
Disruption of circadian rhythms increases the risk of several types of cancer. Mammalian cryptochromes (CRY1 and CRY2) are circadian transcriptional repressors that are related to DNA-repair enzymes. While CRYs lack DNA-repair activity, they modulate the transcriptional response to DNA damage, and CRY2 can promote SKP1 cullin 1–F-box (SCF)FBXL3-mediated ubiquitination of c-MYC and other targets. Here, we characterize five mutations in CRY2 observed in human cancers in The Cancer Genome Atlas. We demonstrate that two orthologous mutations of mouse CRY2 (D325H and S510L) accelerate the growth of primary mouse fibroblasts expressing high levels of c-MYC."

India looks westwards towards Pakistan to counter China

Recommendable!

"Recent conciliatory moves by India’s nationalist government on its western flank have rightly aroused global interest. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s calculus appears relatively simple. Faced with continued Chinese aggression on India’s northern frontier and a likely Taliban resurgence in Afghanistan, improving relations on the country’s western flank, with Pakistan, seems prudent.
In recent weeks, there have been reports of secret back-channel talks between Indian and Pakistani security officials—facilitated by the United Arab Emirates—aimed at easing bilateral tensions. How plants quickly adapt to shifting environmental conditions

Amazing stuff! How agile plants can be!

"... The study ... offers a new understanding of how gene activity directs plant growth, and how quickly plants respond to their environment—with shifting light conditions triggering molecular changes in as little as five minutes. The findings provide insights into how to increase yield and safeguard world food production as climate change shrinks the planet’s arable land. ...
“This paper shows, in high resolution, how plants respond to subtle environmental changes on the cellular level,” ...
“Our study reveals the mechanism in close detail and also shows the rapid nature of the response. We found that when PIF7 is active, it binds to DNA. And our data indicate that this leads to the removal of H2A.Z from the DNA. Subsequently, genes are activated, and then this induces growth, to outcompete the neighboring plants,” ...
The speed of the process was unexpected ... in addition to triggering the stress response within five minutes, the histone landscape also recovered quickly when shade was removed.
“When we removed shade, the levels of H2A.Z at PIF7 target genes went back to normal within 30 minutes,” ..."

"... We found that PIFs [Phytochrome-Interacting Factors] act rapidly to reshape the H2A.Z and H3K9ac epigenetic landscape in response to a change in light quality. ... Thus, we describe a PIF–INO80 regulatory module that is an intermediate step for allowing plants to change their growth trajectory in response to environmental changes."

History's judgement on the global Covid-19 pandemic will not be kind!

This global Covid-19 pandemic has, for all people to notice, exposed and revealed how foolish most of our elected politicians and how inept most of our influential elites are! A total failure of common sense, reason, and rationality! Like lemmings, these politicians and elites were running over the cliff with Covid-19!

The emperor's new clothes (has no clothes) as far as the government responses to Covid-19 are concerned!

So many grave errors were made for over 1.5 years and they were not corrected!

Politicians and the elite allowed a hysteria to go on and fester for over 1.5 years! Sound advice like we have nothing to fear, but fear itself was totally forgotten!

Latest by June 2020, it was clear that Covid-19 is very infectious, but relatively harmless! E.g. young and healthy people were rarely affected and so on.

The lab leak hypothesis was entirely dismissed until late Spring 2021. China was not pressured for more cooperation and so on!

The death toll attributed to Covid-19 was totally inflated and never corrected! I bet, it is at least 50% inflated!

Instead of focusing our efforts on the vulnerable people, the entire populations and all businesses were subjected to Draconian, one size fits all measures like lockdown, which were upheld for 12 months and longer, and so forth!

Retraction of paper on vaccine deaths spurs call for more scrutiny of COVID-19 death reports

I probably have blogged here since about April 2020 that I have serious doubts about the high numbers of deaths supposedly caused by Covid-19! Anybody who died with Covid-19 was counted as having died of Covid-19, which of course has been gross charlatanry!

That this nonsense or hoax or scam was allowed to go on for 1 to 1.5 years is incredible! This pandemic will go down in human history as an epic episode of great human folly and utter ineptitude! Most of our elected politicians and scientific elites have completely failed. As is best exemplified by the highest paid federal bureaucrat and joker, i.e. 80 year old Anthony Fauci of Faucian Bargain fame!

"... "Currently we only have association, we agree, and we never said anything else. But the same is true with fatalities as consequences of SARS-CoV2-infections [sic]," which are "rarely vetted by autopsy or second opinion" to confirm they were caused by the novel coronavirus, rather than incidental to infection.

“Bad fat” suppresses killer T cells from attacking cancer

Very recommendable! Cancer is history!

"... Salk researchers led by Professor Susan Kaech have found that the environment inside tumors (the tumor microenvironment) contains an abundance of oxidized fat molecules, which, when ingested by the killer T cells, suppresses their ability to kill cancer cells. In a vicious cycle, those T cells, in need of energy, increase the level of a cellular fat transporter, CD36, that unfortunately saturates them with even more oxidized fat and further curtails their anti-tumor functions. ...
suggests new pathways for safeguarding the immune system’s ability to fight cancer by reducing the oxidative lipid damage in killer T cells. ...
established that tumors contain elevated amounts of several classes of lipid, and oxidized lipids in particular, which are generally found in oxidized low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), commonly considered “bad” fat. They then observed how killer T cells respond to the oxidized LDLs in tumors and found that killer T cells adapted to the tumor microenvironment by increasing CD36 on their surface and ingesting an abundance of oxidized lipids. ... they found this process served as a catalyst to drive even greater amounts of lipid oxidation internally in the killer T cells and ultimately repressed their defenses. ..."

"A common metabolic alteration in the tumor microenvironment (TME) is lipid accumulation, a feature associated with immune dysfunction. Here, we examined how CD8+ tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) respond to lipids within the TME. We found elevated concentrations of several classes of lipids in the TME and accumulation of these in CD8+ TILs. Lipid accumulation was associated with increased expression of CD36, a scavenger receptor for oxidized lipids, on CD8+ TILs, which also correlated with progressive T cell dysfunction. ...
Thus, an oxidized lipid-CD36 axis promotes intratumoral CD8+ T cell dysfunction and serves as a therapeutic avenue for immunotherapies."

Dinoflagellate Genome Structure Unlike Any Other Known

Amazing stuff! Wonders of life!

"... Rather than the flexible, X-shaped chromosomes familiar to humans, dinoflagellates organize their genetic material in orderly blocks along rigid, rod-shaped chromosomes. Genes within blocks are consistently transcribed in one direction and rarely interact with others outside their immediate vicinity. This odd arrangement, the authors found, influences the three-dimensional structure of the entire chromosome. ...
Dinoflagellates are best known for their relationship to corals. In exchange for a safe home, the single-cell microalgae provide the coral with photosynthetic nutrients. When corals bleach, it’s because they’re expelling their symbionts in response to stress. ...
Their genomes, for one, are massive. S. microadriaticum’s genome is relatively small among dinoflaggelates, but it’s still one-third the size of the human genome. And rather than regulate gene expression only through transcription, dinoflagellates also engage in rampant gene and chromosome duplication, making genome assembly a nightmarish effort for geneticists—putting the puzzle together is more difficult when many of the pieces look identical.

Until very recently, it was also thought that dinoflagellates lacked the histones that condense and package DNA and are present in all other eukaryotes. While recent studies have found that they do in fact have histones, they likely don’t serve the same purpose. Ordinarily, histones work like spools, allowing DNA to wind and unwind to become more or less accessible to transcriptional machinery as needed. In contrast, dinoflagellate chromosomes seem to be perpetually condensed into a crystalline structure, leaving unanswered questions about how their DNA is organized and how it can be accessed for transcription. ..."

Biden's Bureau of Land Management nominee is an unabashed eco-terrorist

Who is in charge of the White House? Probably not the demented 46th President of the United States! Is it his wife or Kamala Harris?

A look at her Wikipedia profile reveals that this nominee has not accomplished much! Very unimpressive! Except she is famous for being involved in criminal sabotage act of tree spiking

"Of all the people President Biden could have nominated to lead the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), he chose a brazen eco-terrorist who also advocates for population control. ...
This is the same Tracy Stone-Manning who wrote a graduate student thesis for the University of Montana, titled “Into the heart of the beast. A case for environmental advertising,” in 1992.
Here are just a few of the deranged claims in her thesis:
The origin of our [environmental] abuses is us. If there were fewer of us, we would have less impact.”
“We must consume less, and more importantly, we must breed fewer consuming humans.”..."

How many of our contemporaries actually believe in such a naive, primitive, stupid, and blatantly false ideology? I am afraid, way too many!

Accelerating deployment of offshore wind energy alter wind climate and reduce future power generation potentials

Anybody, who claims that large offshore wind power farms are benign and environmentally friendly is a propagandist! Unfortunately, this research also relies on climate model predictions!

Of course, large wind power farms change local wind patterns and weather conditions and probably much more!

To invest in wind power as a source of energy is one of the greatest hoaxes and scams of recent history! It is like medieval superstition is alive and kicking! Human folly has no bounds!

"... With increasing size and clustering, offshore wind farms (OWFs) wake effects, which alter wind conditions and decrease the power generation efficiency of wind farms downwind become more important. We use a high-resolution regional climate model with implemented wind farm parameterizations to explore offshore wind energy production limits in the North Sea. We simulate near future wind farm scenarios considering existing and planned OWFs in the North Sea and assess power generation losses and wind variations due to wind farm wake. ...
The large-size of wind farms and their proximity affect not only the performance of its downwind turbines but also that of neighboring downwind farms, reducing the capacity factor by 20% or more, which increases energy production costs and economic losses. ..."

Identifying the Neural Link Between Gut Bacteria and Social Behavior in Mice

Very recommendable! Amazing stuff!

Perhaps this research will one day also lead to better treatments for excessively antisocial or violent humans!

"Research has shown that the communities of bacteria that live in a mouse's gut are essential for the animals to exhibit normal social behavior with other mice. Mice that have been bred to be germ-free, without a gut microbiome, display significant antisocial behaviors, such as avoiding a stranger mouse rather than interacting with it. ...
It had already been shown that, on a chemical level, germ-free mice have significantly higher levels of the hormone corticosterone (the analog of the so-called stress hormone, cortisol, in humans) than mice with healthy microbiomes. The team of researchers, led by former Mazmanian lab postdoctoral scholar Wei-Li Wu, aimed to identify the neurons that were both affected by corticosterone and played a role in social behaviors. ...
"There are a lot of neurons in the body that respond to corticosterone—called glucocorticoid receptor-positive neurons—and we wanted to know which cell populations and brain regions were then responsible for the altered social behaviors in germ-free mice?" ...
To address this, the team conducted fecal transplants from wild-type mice with normal gut microbiota into germ-free mice. These mice then showed decreased corticosterone levels and more normal social behavior. The team then systematically identified a species of bacteria that mediated this improvement, namely Enterococcus faecalis. Germ-free mice that were colonized with E. faecalis showed improved social behaviors and lowered corticosterone levels. The mechanisms through which E. faecalis is able to mediate this improvement will be the subject of future research. ...
This work strengthens the emerging appreciation of the profound effects of the gut-brain connection ..."

"... The gut microbiota contribute to social activity in mice, but the gut–brain connections that regulate this complex behaviour and its underlying neural basis are unclear. Here we show that the microbiome modulates neuronal activity in specific brain regions of male mice to regulate canonical stress responses and social behaviours. Social deviation in germ-free and antibiotic-treated mice is associated with elevated levels of the stress hormone corticosterone, which is primarily produced by activation of the hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis. Adrenalectomy, antagonism of glucocorticoid receptors, or pharmacological inhibition of corticosterone synthesis effectively corrects social deficits following microbiome depletion. Genetic ablation of glucocorticoid receptors in specific brain regions or chemogenetic inactivation of neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus that produce corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) reverse social impairments in antibiotic-treated mice. ..."

Nature journal: It’s official: China has eliminated malaria

Can you rely on communist propaganda when they celebrate 100 years of  communist party dictatorship? Is it possible to verify this claim?
Of course, the Communist Party of China would like to teach the West a lesson whenever they can!

This also begs the question again, why do we not aim to eradicate blood suckers and disease carriers like mosquitoes? Are these blood suckers essential for life on earth or the environment etc.?

"The World Health Organization (WHO) today [6/29/2021] is certifying China as free of malaria, after a decadeslong effort drove an estimated annual toll of 30 million cases in the 1940s, including 300,000 deaths, to zero in 2017. Along the way, China developed new surveillance techniques, medicines, and technologies to break the cycle of transmission between the Anopheles mosquitoes that spread malaria parasites and humans.

Antimalaria efforts started in the 1950s with programs to distribute antimalarial medicines to people at risk, reduce mosquito breeding grounds, and spray insecticides. China launched a program to identify new malaria drugs in the late 1960s. As part of that effort, pharmaceutical chemist Tu Youyou screened traditional Chinese medicine concoctions for compounds active against malaria, eventually isolating artemisinin from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua). Artemisinin became the key compound in the front-line drugs now used against malaria and won Tu a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015. China was also among the countries pioneering the use of insecticide-treated nets in the 1980s. ...

Joe Biden’s limited Iraq and Syria strikes won’t stop Iran by Michael Rubin

Recommendable! The demented 46th President is pretending to carry a big stick before negotiations with Iran!

"On June 27, President Joe Biden ordered airstrikes against three targets used by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. “The U.S. strikes targeted operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and one location in Iraq, both of which lie close to the border between those countries. Several Iran-backed militia groups, including Kata’ib Hezbollah (KH) and Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS), used these facilities,” a Pentagon statement said. ... The airstrikes are the second ordered by Biden against pro-Iranian militias in just over four months. On February 25, Biden ordered similar strikes against a facility in eastern Syria.
Last night’s strikes will be no more effective. ...
Biden chose an option that, in his mind, posed the least chance of escalation or Iraqi diplomatic opprobrium. In effect, Biden chose to prioritize symbolism over effectiveness. ...
Quite the contrary; the groups have grown powerful enough that even Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi not even fears taking substantive action against them, but even attends their parades. ...
Part of the problem for the ineffectiveness of the military option is Biden and Sullivan’s embrace of proportionality. For the Pentagon to calibrate rather than escalate a response leads Iranian strategists to calculate the price of continued drone and rocket strikes is worth it. ...
No one ... believed that Biden would ever repeat a strike equivalent to President Donald Trump’s January 3, 2020 decision to target Iranian Qods Force chief Qassem Soleimani and his Iraqi ally Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, founder of Kata’ib Hezbollah.
... his unpredictability had its advantages. Biden, however, is as predictable as the sunrise. ..."

Beyond coronavirus: the virus discoveries transforming biology

Recommendable! Amazing stuff! Nice overview article by Nature journal! It is more than embarrassing that we still know so little about viruses!

Thus, the risk of viruses as biological weapons is very real! Just imagine, someone, somewhere develops a highly infectious and very deadly virus and its antidote at the same time ...

"Although we humans have been focused on one particularly nasty virus since early 2020, there are legions of other viruses out there waiting to be discovered. Scientists estimate that there are about 1031 individual viral particles inhabiting the oceans alone at any given time — 10 billion times the estimated number of stars in the known Universe.
It’s becoming clear that ecosystems and organisms rely on viruses. Tiny but mighty, they have fueled evolution for millions of years by shuttling genes between hosts. ...
There are just 9,110 named species listed by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), but that’s obviously a pitiful fraction of the total. In part, that’s because officially classifying a virus used to require scientists to culture a virus in its host or host cells — a time-consuming if not impossible process. ...
In 2020 alone, the ICTV added 1,044 species to its official list, and thousands more await description and naming. This proliferation of genomes prompted virologists to rethink the way they classify viruses and helped to clarify their evolution. There is strong evidence that viruses emerged multiple times, rather than sprouting from a single origin. ..."

Switzerland’s labor Unions Must Become More Transparent

Even the moderate Swiss think that labor unions are too powerful and their financing/spending of money is too intransparent!

"By European standards, Switzerland’s trade unions are a pretty mild bunch. Germany’s train drivers are threatening (yet another) strike; Italy’s trade unionists are almost permanently grumpy; and the less said about France’s often disgruntled leftist unions the better. ...
Against a background of mounting transparency, disclosure about party financing and spiraling corporate reporting standards, union financing remains murky.

The opacity is all the more striking given unions’ ever louder voice in recent critical political decisions. Concerns among organized labor about greater risks of wage dumping was central to the collapse of Switzerland’s years long talks with the European Union about a new Framework Treaty on bilateral relations. And the unions have been similarly inflexible on any further liberalization of the domestic labor market. ...
“The annual report of Travail Suisse (another employees’ umbrella body) is richly illustrated, but reveals no information about financial flows. Meanwhile, the ever more radical Unia (Switzerland’s biggest trade union) discloses fat income of CHF 143 million for 2019, but leaves the reader in the dark about any details of its sources of income” ...

The opacity of union accounting is all the more striking given the fact that some proportion of their funds derives, directly or indirectly, from the public sector, i.e. from tax payers. The concept of “social partnership” comprising unions, government and private business – popular in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, but relatively unfamiliar in the English speaking world – involves, among other things, setting minimum wage and working condition agreements for different sectors of the economy. ..."

C-SPAN Historians Survey on U.S. Presidents 2021 with President Trump as 4th worst

The new C-SPAN historian survey to rank U.S. presidents is out! This one, for the first time, includes President Trump!

This survey/ranking is a total joke!
President Obama is the 10th best president ever? That is beyond ridiculous!
President Trump is ranked 41? Who are these historians?

I am not sure why President Lincoln is ranked no. 1 survey after survey! This president was ultimately responsible for the by far bloodiest war in U.S. history to the bitter end for four years! Over 600,000 soldiers died, the number of civilian deaths is unknown! Millions more were injured, often severely! This war was fought to prevent the secession of southern states. Secession of states is not unconstitutional nor illegal! Anyone, who claims the American Civil War was primarily over slavery is a liar! Slavery would have been phased out anyway like in the rest of the Western world! There was no massive war necessary to achieve that!

Why President FDR and Theodore Roosevelt are ranked 3rd and 4th is a total mystery! FDR was, in my opinion, the worst of all presidents! He pushed socialism like no other! He was recklessly hiding his incapacity! Because of him, term limits were introduced and much more. TR was also a so called progressive president!
