Several users reportedly complain to FTC that ChatGPT is causing psychological harm. Really!

Maybe individuals, who are susceptible, should not be using ChatGPT or not without company (e.g. children not without parents)!

When children interact with ChatGPT the famous line "parental discretion is advised" comes to mind!

I guess, the small number of cases speaks for itself! This is not really an issue, but it grabs headlines!

One may also suspect that these complaints are not the whole truth! E.g. incomplete story about the interaction with ChatGPT etc.

"At least seven people have complained to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission that ChatGPT caused them to experience severe delusions, paranoia and emotional crises, Wired reported, citing public records of complaints mentioning ChatGPT since November 2022.

One of the complainants claimed that talking to ChatGPT for long periods had led to delusions and a “real, unfolding spiritual and legal crisis” about people in their life. Another said during their conversations with ChatGPT, it started using “highly convincing emotional language” and that it simulated friendships and provided reflections that “became emotionally manipulative over time, especially without warning or protection.” ..."

"On March 13, a woman from Salt Lake City called the Federal Trade Commission to file a complaint against OpenAI’s ChatGPT. She claimed to be acting “on behalf of her son, who was experiencing a delusional breakdown.”

“The consumer’s son has been interacting with an AI chatbot called ChatGPT, which is advising him not to take his prescribed medication and telling him that his parents are dangerous,” reads the FTC’s summary of the call. “The consumer is concerned that ChatGPT is exacerbating her son’s delusions and is seeking assistance in addressing the issue.” ..."

People Who Say They’re Experiencing AI Psychosis Beg the FTC for Help "The Federal Trade Commission received 200 complaints mentioning ChatGPT between November 2022 and August 2025. Several attributed delusions, paranoia, and spiritual crises to the chatbot."
