Is the EU Creating an Alternative to NATO?

Recommendable! However the title of this video is wrong! It is not an alternative, but a complement, because the US does not need NATO as much as the EU needs the US.
In addition, it is very long overdue that the whole EU takes more international responsibilities in securing peace, free movement of people and commodities, defend small independent countries etc.

EU recently signed defense pacts and established closer military cooperation way beyond Europe.

Scientists discover unknown organelle inside our cells

Amazing stuff! It again confirms that we still know so little!

How is this possible that at the end of the first quarter of the 21st century that such a common and long-lived vesicle was not discovered earlier? The cell is probably one of the most researched objects you can think of. The single cell was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665.
What else are we missing?

"The discovery of an unknown organelle inside our cells could open the door to new treatments for devastating inherited diseases.

The organelle, a type of specialized structure, has been dubbed a "hemifusome" by its discoverers ... This little organelle has a big job helping our cells sort, recycle and discard important cargo within themselves, the scientists say. The new discovery could help scientists better understand what goes wrong in genetic conditions that disrupt these essential housekeeping functions. ...

“This is like discovering a new recycling center inside the cell,” ...

“It’s exciting because finding something truly new inside cells is rare – and it gives us a whole new path to explore.” ..."

From the abstract:
"The pleiomorphic structure and dynamic behavior of cellular endomembrane systems have been extensively studied using classical electron microscopy. However, fixation and staining constraints limit the in situ visualization of transient interactions, such as membrane fusion, scission, and intraluminal vesicle formation, potentially overlooking intermediate structures like membrane hemifusion.
Using in situ cryo-electron tomography in four mammalian cell lines, we identify heterotypic hemifused vesicles featuring an extended hemifusion diaphragm consistently associated with a 42-nanometer proteolipid nanodroplet (PND).
We designate these vesicular organelle complexes as “hemifusomes.” Hemifusomes constitute up to 10% of vesicular organelles at the cell periphery but do not engage in canonical endocytic pathways.
These structures exhibit diverse conformations and frequently contain intraluminal vesicles.
Building on the continuum of related morphologies observed, we propose that hemifusomes serve as platforms for vesicular biogenesis, mediated by the PND. These findings provide direct in situ evidence of long-lived hemifused vesicle complexes and introduce an ESCRT-independent model for multivesicular body (MVB) formation."

Researchers capture first signs of ovarian cancer risk in a very young female patient

Good news! Cancer is history (soon)! God have mercy on this 23-year old woman!

This news release by Mayo Clinic sucks in so far as it does not contain the words woman/women at all although a ovarian cancer is sex specific and no transgender female was ever reported to have suffered from it as I believe! Only beginning in the fourth paragraph does the female journalist mention the pronoun "she" for the first time. This is really appalling!

"... But in the fallopian tube cells collected from the patient with HBOC syndrome and Li-Fraumeni syndrome, the scientists saw something they had never seen before. Instead of the two types of epithelial cells, the secretory cells vastly outnumbered the multiciliated cells across the fallopian tube. They also found that secretory cells were driving chronic inflammation — an established contributor to cancer development. ..."

From the results (the research articles does not appear to contain an abstract):
"Results
A 23-year-old woman presented to Mayo Clinic with a palpable right breast mass and intermittent unilateral nipple discharge.
Biopsy confirmed grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma.
Magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed clinical stage IB disease along with a left renal mass and ovarian cyst (Fig 1A).
Genetic testing identified germline mutations: a likely pathogenic variant in TP53 (c.96+1G>C) affecting a splice donor site, suspected to disrupt RNA splicing and impair protein function, and a pathogenic BRCA2 variant (c.6275_6276del) causing a premature stop codon and loss of protein function (Fig 1B).
The patient underwent bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomy because of her elevated risk of radiation-associated malignancies (Fig 1C).
Renal biopsy revealed grade 3 papillary renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and she then underwent robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy.
Pathology confirmed TFE3-rearranged RCC with negative surgical margins and lymph nodes (Fig 1D).
After counseling for increased risk of therapy-related myeloid neoplasms, the patient decided to proceed with chemotherapy for breast cancer and completed 12 weeks of paclitaxel/carboplatin neoadjuvant therapy."

Crystal defies Pasteur's chirality rules in breakthrough discovery

Amazing stuff! Will it be confirmed or is it a fluke?

"Researchers observed optical behaviours linked to chirality in crystalline lithium cobalt selenium oxide (Li2Co3(SeO3)4), a centrosymmetric crystal that as such cannot be chiral. ‘Within the inorganic crystal community there’s been a strong sentiment that you cannot have chiroptical effects under centrosymmetry’ ...

Chirality refers to two versions of a structure – be that light, molecules or crystals – that are almost identical but cannot be superimposed on each other, just like your left and right hand. When a structure displays centrosymmetry it has lines of symmetry in every direction from a central point, ruling out any possibility of chirality. ...

Chiral materials have a chiroptical response – they rotate linearly polarised light and absorb circularly polarised light differently depending on whether it is left-or right-handed ...

As centrosymmetric crystals have no chirality in the first place, no-one expected to see chirality in their optical response at all. However, the researchers showed that centrosymmetric crystalline Li2Co3(SeO3)4 transmits more left circularly polarised light than right. ..."

From the editor's note and abstract:
"Editor’s summary
For nearly two centuries, chemists have relied on absorption and rotation of polarized light to distinguish chiral compounds, so much so that the term “optically active” is often used synonymously with the structural absence of mirror or inversion symmetry. Parrish et al. now report that a particular centrosymmetric crystalline solid, a lithium cobalt selenium oxide compound, can nonetheless differentially absorb circularly polarized light. They explain the observation as an interference effect between linear dichroism and linear birefringence, and they derive the general symmetry requirements distinguishing the response from conventional optical activity. ...

Abstract
Crystalline solids are governed by universal structure-property relationships derived from their crystal symmetry, leading to paradigmatic rules on what properties they can and cannot exhibit.
A long-held structure-property relationship is that centrosymmetric crystals cannot differentially absorb circularly polarized light.
In this study, we demonstrate the design, synthesis, and characterization of the centrosymmetric material Li2Co3(SeO3)4, which violates this relationship not by defying symmetry-imposed selection rules but by invoking a photophysical process not previously characterized for crystalline solids.
This process originates from an interference between linear dichroism and linear birefringence, referred to as LD-LB, and involves strong chiroptical signals that invert upon sample flipping. In addition to enabling a chiroptical response under centrosymmetry, this process opens up photonic engineering opportunities based on crystalline solids."

15 years of banking data of almost 68,000 individuals reveals early warning signs of cognitive decline in older adults

Recommendable! This seems to be a very comprehensive scale study!

Too bad we did not check the bank accounts of the Biden Clan in time! 😊 Caution: satire!

Money matters! Most people probably try hard to avoid any errors particularly when performing/executing financial transactions etc.

However, I have my doubts about the interpretation of the data. It appears, the researchers approached this study with a serious bias. Apparently, they presumed that when older individuals spend less on day to day activities compared to household and

"A major new study has uncovered how everyday financial behaviors—captured in routine banking data—can signal early signs of cognitive decline and financial vulnerability in older adults, up to a decade before formal intervention. ..."

From the key points and abstract:
"Key Points
Question
Can banking data reveal early symptoms of declining financial capacity and associated financial vulnerabilities?

Findings
In this case-control study, the financial behaviors of 16,742 donors of power of attorney bank registrations with a “loss of financial capacity” marker were compared with a matched control group of 50,226 individuals.
The analysis of 344 transactional and nontransactional financial indicators revealed that in the 10 years before power of attorney bank registration due to loss of financial capacity, the donor group reduced their everyday activities, spent more time at home, and showed signs of increased financial vulnerability compared with the control group.

Meaning
This study suggests that banking data can reveal behavioral markers and financial vulnerabilities associated with the loss of financial capacity.

Abstract
Importance
Many conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases and psychiatric disorders, can impair financial decision-making in older age. Although banking data offer rich insights, they have not yet been leveraged to understand how the loss of financial capacity is associated with financial behaviors.

Objective
To describe the behavioral indicators of financial capacity loss and the association of financial capacity loss with financial vulnerability.

Design, Setting, and Participants
In this case-control study, banking data recorded by a major UK bank between January 1, 2009, and April 21, 2023, were used to compare the financial outcomes of a group of 16,742 donors of power of attorney (PoA) registrations with a “loss of financial capacity” marker and a control group of 50,226 individuals with no reported financial capacity loss that matched the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the donor group 10 years prior to their PoA registration. Group differences in financial outcomes were examined in the 10-year period leading up to the PoA registration. Analysis took place between December 2023 and December 2024.

Exposures
Bank registrations of PoAs recorded between 2019 and 2023 for which the attorney reported that the donor lost financial capacity.

Main Outcome Measures
A broad range of 344 financial measures capturing day-to-day transactional activity (eg, spending on travel and hobbies) and other financial behaviors (eg, online banking logins).

Results
The group of donors of PoA registrations with a “loss of financial capacity” marker comprised 16 742 individuals (mean [SD] age, 72.8 [8.5] years; 10 285 women [61.4%]), and the control group comprised 50 226 individuals (mean [SD] age, 72.7 [8.2] years; 30 657 women [61.0%]).
During the 5 years prior to PoA registration, compared with the control group, donors were increasingly less likely to spend on everyday activities (clothing [difference, −9.1 percentage points (pp); 95% CI, −10.0 to −8.3 pp], travel [eg, hotels; difference, −9.6 pp; 95% CI, −10.5 to −8.8 pp], hobbies [eg, gardening; difference, −7.9 pp; 95% CI, −8.8 to −7.1 pp]) and more likely to spend on items associated with increased time at home (eg, household gas and electricity bills [difference, 5.1 pp; 95% CI, 4.6-5.7 pp]).
Signs of heightened financial vulnerability in the donor group compared with the control group included an
increase in the frequencies of PIN (personal identification number) reset requests ...,
fraud cases (eg, animal charity difference ...), and
lost or stolen credit or debit cards reported (...) and
increased spending on charity (...).
In addition, the donor group exhibited reduced attention to finances compared with the control group via decreased online banking activity (difference in number of monthly online banking logins, −1.0 [95% CI, −1.1 to −0.8]).

Conclusions and Relevance
This study highlighted the financial behaviors and vulnerabilities associated with declining financial capacity, such as a decrease in activity across multiple domains of daily life. These findings illustrate how banking data can reveal early behavioral signs and financial harms associated with financial capacity loss."

President Trump floats effort to get journalists to reveal who leaked low-confidence Defense Intelligence Agency report on Iran

Good news! Bravo! One has to suspect it was indeed a politically motivated leak by news media.

It is generally irresponsible and reckless to jeopardize ongoing military operations and national security by leaking such information in an open society!

This is effort by President Trump (if confirmed) is very controversial as it touches the journalist/reporter source privilege doctrine!

Did the media again act irresponsible and reckless as if e.g. suffering from the Trump Derangement Syndrome? Quite possible!

However, for the protections for the journalist/reporter source privilege to be enjoyed, the involved journalists, their supervisors and the media outlet are responsible to make every reasonable effort to properly verify/vet that the source is authentic, credible and accurate. If it is sensitive, secret  information on current military operations, the responsibility also includes political neutrality! With significant privileges come responsibilities! Someone ought to  lose such privileges when acting irresponsible and reckless or be punished!

There are also some doubts e.g. that the leaked report was e.g. timely. Perhaps, it was already outdated etc. when it was leaked, but without such a disclaimer.

Fact is that the intelligence services community of the US government is very large. It has a dozen or so agencies, probably all of them producing various reports etc. It is probably even expected that any time some agency is tasked to produce a contrarian view/report etc.

Caveat: I am not familiar with the details of the leak.

Climate change without human influence. We need more science and less superstition!

Science, not superstition please!

If you are superstitious, then please continue to believe in the deeply flawed Greenhouse Gas Theory etc.

What are climate demagogues (who think they are demigods)? Those who call others climate deniers! 😊

On a daily basis we are inundated with daily reports about the Global Warming hoax and Climate Change religion. Much of it is superstition comparable to when humans believed the earth was in the center of the universe.

Much of the so called climate science is junk science so are e.g. the climate models.

Fact is we humans still know very little about the complex phenomenon climate! Climatology is still in its infancy!

Here is my quick, unfinished theory about some major factors affecting earth's climate beyond any significant human influence and control:

  1. Fluctuations of solar activity.
Periodic, recurrent or single events etc..
Few humans would probably doubt that the sun is perhaps the greatest influence of all on climate on earth.
So far we still know very little of any existing cycles other than the famous, very short sunspot cycle of about every 11 years. What other, perhaps much longer cycles etc. are out there?
  2. Space travel of the solar system.
The solar system is orbiting around the center of the Milky Way moving with an average velocity of 450,000 miles per hour. It takes about 230 to 250 million years to complete one revolution. There is even a "wobble" associate with it.
In other words, relative to the universe, the solar system (incl. earth) are in a different location every day. What is the effect on earth's climate. None at all?
  3. Precession of the earth axis
The precession of the Earth's axis refers to the slow, conical wobble of Earth's rotational axis, taking roughly 26,000 years to complete a full cycle.
What are the effects on earth's climate? None at all?
  4. Plate tectonics
How much is geology/geophysics involved in influencing climate on earth and how?
There is e.g. a Ring of Fire.
  5. Conveyor belts of the oceans
How much do we really know about e.g. the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
Supposedly, the Pacific Ocean has no conveyor belt. Maybe it is not yet even discovered.
However, there is apparently a global conveyor belt.
Fact is we still know very little of the influence of the oceans on climate and vice versa.
  6. Ice ages and Warm periods preceding the human population explosion and the Industrial Revolution
The many climate demagogues are almost always very fast to ignore, dismiss or downplay these facts!
Just over the last 1000 years alone there were at least two such major periods that we know of:
    1) The Medieval Warm Period between about 950 and 1250 CE
    2) The Little Ice Age between about 1300 and 1850 CE. We are still coming out of this last Ice Age.

"Chinese researchers have developed the first highly parallel optical computing integrated chip, named “Meteor-1”, setting a milestone for using light to perform an enormous number of operations at the same time, the scientists say. ..."

Google AI Search results:
"The Meteor-1 is a significant development in China's pursuit of advanced computing technology, particularly in optical computing.
Here's a summary of its key aspects:
Pioneering Optical Computing Chip: The Meteor-1 is described as China's first highly parallel optical computing integrated chip. It utilizes light (photons) instead of electrons for data processing, offering advantages like ultra-high speed, broad bandwidth, and low power consumption.

Focus on Parallelism: Unlike previous optical computing efforts that focused on expanding the size of the computing matrix, the Meteor-1 aims for higher parallelism by increasing the number of simultaneous tasks it can handle. It incorporates over 100 distinct frequency channels within one photonic platform, enabling a hundredfold increase in "optical computility".

Performance:
  • Theoretical peak computing power exceeding 2,560 TOPS (tera-operations per second) at a 50 GHz optical clock.
  • This performance is reportedly comparable to Nvidia's advanced GPUs like the RTX 4090.
  • The chip boasts an energy efficiency of over 3.2 TOPS/W.

Key Technological Features:
  • Soliton micro-comb source: This on-chip light source generates multiple wavelengths, eliminating the need for hundreds of discrete lasers, reducing system complexity, power consumption, and cost.
  • MZI network: Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) network is used for signal processing.
  • High transmission bandwidth: Offers a transmission bandwidth above 40nm for low-latency parallel operations.
  • Custom-designed driver board: Features over 256 channels for precise optical signal control.

Department of Justice fires 3 prosecutors involved in January 6 criminal cases: report

Good news!

"... The AP reported that two of the attorneys fired were supervisors overseeing Jan. 6 prosecutions in the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington and a "line attorney" who worked on cases related to the Capitol riot. ..."

"... A letter that was received by one of the prosecutors was signed by Attorney General Pam Bondi. The letter did not provide a reason for their removal, effective immediately, citing only “Article II of the United States Constitution and the laws of the United States,” according to a copy seen by The Associated Press. ...

Top leaders at the Justice Department have also fired employees who worked on the prosecutions against Trump and demoted a slew of career supervisors in what has been seen as an effort to purge the agency of lawyers ..."

Canada orders Chinese surveillance camera manufacturer Hikvision to cease operations

Good news! Sometimes the West takes human rights violations seriously!

"Industry Minister Melanie Joly said the Canadian government issued an order against Chinese surveillance camera manufacturer Hikvision to close for national security reasons.

"The government has determined that Hikvision Canada Inc's continued operations in Canada would be injurious to Canada's national security," Joly wrote on X.

The U.S. has expressed concerns with Hikvision over its use of equipment from China's Xinjiang region, which is the basis of reports of abuses against the Uyghur population, according to Reuters.  ..."

Amazing stuff! But no crash, no crush! Just kidding!
In the upcoming age of autonomous vehicles, do we still need to own a car?

Stayed in my head all night long ...
And if I should lose your love
For any reason, any reason at all
Then let my record show
I gave you all the love I know, ooh, ooh, oh, oh"

Trump completes the most ‘significant and astonishing’ week of his presidency so far

Very recommendable! Nice summary!

How Hong Kong became one of the world’s most unequal cities. Really!

This video is a piece of junk journalism! Relies on the infamous NGO called  Oxfam! Propaganda and demagoguery! Tax the rich is also included.
A video paid for by the Communist Party of China, I suspect!
Before Hong Kong was occupied by the Communist Party of China after 1997 it was one of the most free market places on earth. This takeover was a grave violation of international treaties.
This video completely neglects to report e.g. the fact that the society of Hong Kong used to be very dynamic, yes someone started poor, but with talent and skill quickly became affluent and so on. Vice versa, some rich individuals ended up poor when they became lazy etc. Hong Kong also has a considerable middle class not mentioned at all!
Caveat: I did not finish watching this video!

The Sexualization of Children in school a PragerU 5 minutes vidoe

Very recommendable, but a little old! I watched it now at least the second time.

US Senate GOP proposes faster elimination of EV tax credit compared to House-passed megabill

Good news! Bravo! This egregious government subsidy for the purchase of EVs should never have become law! A huge scandal!

It benefited primarily high income earners! Where were the usual social justice warriors when you need them!!!!

"Under the Senate bill, the deadline for ending the credit would move to September 30 from December 31 in the House version of the so-called megabill, which is a tax-cut and spending package. ...

Currently, the tax credit on new electric vehicle purchases and leases is up to $7,500 and up to $4,000 for used EVs under $25,000.

The House version also allowed automakers who have sold less than 200,000 EVs to continue selling models eligible for the EV tax credit until the end of 2026. ..."

A new theory proposes a six dimensional spacetime

Amazing stuff! Exciting! Possibly a breakthrough!

This is the latest research on this topic of three dimensional time is written by a single scientist, i.e. Gunther Kletetschka (like Albert Einstein).

The Google Scholar profile of this researcher is not exactly spectacular with only less than 4,500 lifetime citations, a total of 455 publications since 1989. However, purely theoretical papers like this one usually garner fewer citations, than other, more "applied" papers. Albert Einstein published his famous theory of special relativity at age 26 in 1905.

Note in our time so many research papers are written by sometimes hundreds of scientist/researchers as if this was the new paradigm (diversity and inclusion lead to illusions and dilution? 😊). Who are these hermits/loners that still write papers alone? Caution: satire.

Apparently, there have been previous attempts of a theory of time with three dimensions, but this latest theory here might allow for e.g. better empirically testing.

I suppose the long, dark knights and the low population density in Alaska may have helped the scientist to develop this theory. Just kidding!

"Time, not space plus time, might be the single fundamental property in which all physical phenomena occur, according to a new theory by a University of Alaska Fairbanks scientist. ..."

From the abstract:
"This paper introduces a theoretical framework based on three-dimensional time, where the three temporal dimensions emerge from fundamental symmetry requirements.
The necessity for exactly three temporal dimensions arises from observed quantum-classical-cosmological transitions that manifest at three distinct scales:
Planck-scale quantum phenomena,
interaction-scale processes, and
cosmological evolution.
These temporal scales directly generate three particle generations through eigenvalue equations of the temporal metric, naturally explaining both the number of generations and their mass hierarchy.
The framework introduces a metric structure with three temporal and three spatial dimensions, preserving causality and unitarity while extending standard quantum mechanics and field theory.
While earlier work explored three-dimensional time in Kaluza–Klein theory, this paper’s approach provides specific experimental predictions and a complete particle spectrum.
This approach provides elegant solutions to long-standing problems in particle physics: the three-generation structure emerges naturally from temporal symmetries, weak interaction parity violation arises from geometric properties, and quantum gravity achieves finite corrections without ultraviolet divergences.
The framework accurately reproduces known particle masses, including the top quark ..., muon ..., and electron ...
Building on this validation, the theory makes precise quantitative predictions, including neutrino masses ..., and gravitational wave speed modifications ...
These signatures will be testable through next-generation collider experiments, gravitational wave observatories, and cosmological surveys in the 2025–2030 timeframe. Notably, General Relativity emerges as a natural limiting case when two temporal dimensions become negligible.
The mathematical consistency and predictive power of this framework, combined with its ability to unify quantum and gravitational phenomena, suggest it deserves consideration as a fundamental theory of physics."

New theory proposes time has three dimensions, with space as a secondary effect (this popular science article even has a special editor's note)
