Russia's fiber-optic wire guided drones used in the Ukraine

It seems this is a very much underreported new development in the Russo-Ukrainian War. To the best of my knowledge they were probably introduced in September of 2024 as regular weapons of choice. Experimental drones were perhaps introduced as early as March of this year.

These FPV (first person view) kamikaze drones can apparently not be jammed. They manage to fly and target with high precision even in dense forests.

These drones release the fiber-optic wire from the drone itself thereby e.g. avoiding the issue of the wire getting trapped.

They can reach a distance of about 8-10 km.

I have seen Russian video footage captured by these drones from the German news media outlet BILD. They seem to be very effective and show high maneuverability in difficult terrain.

"These drones provide excellent image quality and flight stability, maintaining the signal until the very last second. However, despite their impressive capabilities, the drone’s range is limited by the length of the fiber-optic cable, which constrains its flight distance ..."
