The chart below is for the United Kingdom.

You wonder what caused the first, more significant and surprising spike between 1995-2000?

I doubt, the second spike shown after the Covid-19 pandemic is due to the Covid-19 pandemic!

You wish, the Spectator had provided more historical data. E.g. showing whether there were any other such spikes and long lasting high levels in the past.

Of course, some lazy, sloppy journalists of the article accompanying this chart failed to explain any of it (see source below)!
