Trigger
Just read “Why Does Planned Parenthood Oppose OTC Contraception?”. Well, it is one third or so of Planned Parenthood’s business to prescribe oral contraceptives and they regard this as major leads. And if it was over the counter, women would then have to pay for contraceptives instead of health insurance.
Too Many Prescriptions
In general, way too many medications are only available through a doctor’s visit and require a prescription. This is called paternalism or nanny state. This is one significant reason why healthcare is so expensive in the U.S. and elsewhere in the Western world. Let’s give patients much more control over medications as it used to be the case in the U.S. before FDA or before roughly 1905!
Oral Contraceptives
Oral contraceptives are a case in point. It was perhaps advisable in the first decade after the invention of oral contraceptives in the 1960s to require doctors to monitor etc. the use of these new contraceptives and the health of women who were using it. But since then, women should decide when and how often they go to a doctor to figure out which one is right for them and so on.
Once oral contraceptives become available over the counter, I bet you prices will be falling. If they are not falling allow more imports of such.
