The Wilson administration deported Emma to Russia — in the sealed cabin of a ship, and then by sealed railcar. Still, she was euphoric at the prospect of seeing the “land of promise,” a land “freed from political and economic masters.”
What she found was the opposite. Lenin’s rule was shocking and “grotesque,” as she put it. She changed her mind about the Soviet Union. And she wrote a book, My Disillusionment in Russia. ..."
