You think we are now smarter than our humble predecessors of hundreds of years or a few thousand years ago? Think again! Yes, we now have more knowledge (but still very insufficient), but we are not really smarter.
E.g. we still know very little about the effects of the sun and its non constant solar activity, on earth's climate. The same is true about e.g. the travel of the Solar System within the Milky Way galaxy.
