The last major refinery in the U.S. was built 45 years ago? What!

Talking about a deprecated and neglected infrastructure in the U.S.! True, refineries probably have a long useful lifespan of several decades with proper maintenance and upgrades.

How much has this to do with current skyrocketing gas prices? Probably, significantly!

"It’s been 45 years since the nation’s last complex refinery was built by Marathon in Garyville, La. as the economy expanded and people needed more gasoline."

"Our Garyville refinery is located along the Mississippi River in southeastern Louisiana between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It has a crude oil refining capacity of 585,000 barrels per calendar day (bpcd)."

"The Garyville Refinery is the 3rd largest American oil refinery with a nameplate capacity of 556,000 barrels per day (88,400 m3/d)."

Why are gas prices so high? It was decades in the making.
