Soviet-style FDA Abolishes Trans Fats

Update Of 12/2/2013

Just read following interview with the Professor Walter Willett, chair of the Department of Nutrition at the School of Public Health, Harvard University:

This is how a technocrat and elitist thinks!

Excerpts & Comments (Emphasis added):
  1. I don’t think any reasonable person could now claim that they are regarded as safe because every major organization that has looked at this issue has concluded that trans fats (produced by partial hydrogenation) are harmful. Implementation of this determination will effectively eliminate trans fats due to partial hydrogenation from our food supply., ...” [Does he think he is some kind of a god!]
  2. “Even though about 75 percent of trans fats have been removed from our food supply already, millions of Americans are still consuming amounts that are harmful. ” [Does this not suggest that such draconian, statist measures are not necessary anymore?]
  3. “Yes, most but not all restaurants and food manufacturers have already eliminated trans fats. I don’t think there will be substantial resistance; it will probably become difficult to obtain trans fat because producers are likely to eliminate it.” [The language of this demi god is just breathtaking! This guy is obnoxious, just read the rest of the short interview!]

Federalism Vs. All Powerful Federal Government

As long as former New York City Mayor Bloomberg was waging his personal vendetta against trans fats or soda drinks the rest of the country could look upon this authoritarian nanny state measure and shrug it off.

Now that the FDA has promulgated a new ruling trans fats will now be banned throughout the country. For many decades, federalism in the U.S. has been increasingly supplanted by an all powerful federal government.

Rationalization

Of course, the proponents highlight health risks etc. in defense of this measure. What other health risks will be discovered next? I like mountain hiking. Will the FDA soon mandate that I wear a helmet etc.?

Instead of outright prohibition why is education and persuasion not tried harder? Do high school kids learn enough about healthy nutrition? Do community colleges offer attractive courses in better nutrition? And so on …

Only Socialists think that command and control is best for everyone!

Unconstitutional. Period.

Hope, the U.S. Supreme Court will agree with the People here. This nanny state paternalism has to stop!

What is next? We just had the elimination of incandescent light bulbs for toxic CFL, although new LED technology was already around the corner. Smoking is now prohibited even in private establishments in some parts of the country (or in Germany).

To Make A Long Story Short

Banning of trans fat is a big government fad or obsession! Period!

Abolish The FDA And Start Over

This is the best course of action, I can think of, for the FDA. We ought to devolve more power to regulate to the individual states.
