Electric flying VTOL taxis near reality, but US infrastructure lags

Good news!

"Electric air taxis are set to debut in select US cities through a government pilot program, but infrastructure is lagging, experts say.
Archer Aviation, the official air taxi provider for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, is advancing toward Federal Aviation Administration certification with its Midnight air taxi, but the main challenge remains the development of vertiports and charging stations."

"... This new dual-use autonomous VTOL aircraft platform, highlighted by its Halo (commercial) and Thunder (defense) variants, builds on eight years of eVTOL development and flight testing by Archer. It features a clean-sheet design, bringing the commercial VTOL sector's rapid innovation in electric propulsion and rotor design directly into a performance-optimized configuration. ..."

US Senate Minority Leader Schumer urges US Senator Fetterman not to leave Democratic caucus. Really!

When will this meanwhile senile US Senator Chuck Schumer finally step down for health reasons. He has been acting irresponsible and reckless like his colleague Mitch McConnell not to resign for some years now!

Do we need term limits for US Senators too? Maybe!

Schumer urges Fetterman not to leave Democratic caucus: 'Very good member of Congress' | Just The News "The comment comes after Fetterman indicated that he could leave the Democratic Party over its anti-Israel stance. He has repeatedly stated that he would not become a Republican, indicating that he would be an independent instead."

How DARPA plans to get nuclear power in the size of a 'AA battery'

Good news! When can I get one? 😊

"... As a way to bypass that roadblock, DARPA funded seven competing teams as part of its Rads to Watts program to refine a range of approaches to radiovoltaics. The objective of the multi-million-dollar program (full figures weren’t disclosed) is a new kind of miniature power cell that can run anything from satellites in space to tactical radios to pacemakers, tough enough to work for years or decades without recharging and in extreme environments that freeze or fry traditional power systems. ..."

From the Calvin Coolidge speech “The Inspiration of the Declaration,” delivered on America’s 150th birthday on July 5th, 1926

Maybe the celebration of the 250th birthday of the U.S. Declaration of Independence would be incomplete without this quote:

“If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final.

If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions.

If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people.”

Stardust may have seeded the Solar System

Amazing stuff! The charm of stardust! Or when stardust catches the eyes of scientists! 😊

"... Roughly 4.6 billion years ago, part of a giant molecular cloud collapsed, with most mass collecting to form what would one day become our Sun. The leftover matter flattened into a rotating protoplanetary disc, which ultimately gave rise to planets, moons, and other objects that make up the Solar System. As the disc cooled, some of its matter condensed to form tiny mineral structures known as calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs). These materials, which are preserved inside meteorites, represent some of the Solar System’s oldest known rocks.

Scientists recently found that some of these CAIs contain large amounts of strontium-84, a relatively rare isotope found in certain kinds of stardust that existed before the Sun formed. The discovery came as a surprise, since it was previously assumed that the region where CAIs formed was hot enough to completely vaporize this dust. The team posits that grains of ancient stardust instead acted as nucleation seeds, drawing the Solar System’s earliest solids to condense around them—just as a particle of dust might accumulate water droplets that freeze to form a snowflake."

From the abstract:
"Recent reports of extreme strontium-84 excesses in primitive Solar System condensates, known as fine-grained calcium-aluminum–rich inclusions (fg-CAIs), suggest that presolar stardust may be preserved in refractory meteoritic components.
This is at odds with preconceptions that presolar grains were completely vaporized in the CAI-forming region.
Here, we reappraise the role of presolar materials in early condensation and overall disk heterogeneity by isolating strontium from primary fg-CAI phases.
We demonstrate that extreme strontium-84 anomalies are likely hosted in a subpopulation of CAI oxides. The anomalies of primitive noncarrier phases are shown to be attenuated but correlated with the abundance of presolar precursors, which suggests that carriers exert leverage on ensuing condensate compositions. We propose that this relationship between isotope anomalies in refractory CAI components stems from stardust acting as nucleation seeds for the earliest solids formed in the Solar System."

Sponging up sea water pollution

Good news! This is very preliminary, but promising research!

"... Sponges filter water through their pores, removing heavy metals, organics and bacteria while recycling nutrients.
Since shipping ports suffer from high concentrations of oil and toxins, researchers thought hardy sponges might provide a natural cleaning service. A team collected members of five sponge species for introduction to the Mediterranean port Marina Palamós. They began by growing the sponges on ceramic plates in the lab, then transplanted 42 specimens onto metal grids coated in calcium carbonate which were located within the port. ...

But the chicken liver sponge, Chondrosia reniformis, had a 92% survival rate over 455 days, even reproducing asexually. The sponge also showed an ability to “creep” away from threats such as pollution and UV radiation to more hidden crevices. ..."

"... “Here we show that some sponge species have exceptional potential for use in the restoration of degraded harbor habitats,” ...

Unlike many sponges, the chicken kidney sponge can ‘creep’ away if local conditions deteriorate – for example, when nearby organisms compete. It can also relocate from the exposed upper surface of a rock, where it is subjected to UV radiation, polluted sediments, and predators, to sheltered crevices where these stresses are greatly reduced.
It also reproduces asexually by fission: this allows populations to expand rapidly and later reproduce sexually, increasing the chances of successful fertilization.” ..."

From the abstract:
"Harbor infrastructures impose strong environmental stress on coastal marine communities, limiting the persistence of many native species and hindering ecological restoration.
Identifying resilient habitat-engineering organisms is therefore key to developing effective and affordable renaturalization strategies. In this study, we evaluated the suitability of five Mediterranean sponge species to withstand the process of collection, laboratory manipulation, and transplantation to a recreational harbor, where they were monitored over 455 days using image-based morphometric analyses coupled with computational modeling.
Among the species tested, only Chondrosia reniformis showed high resilience under harbor conditions, with 91.7% survival. In contrast, all individuals of Corticium candelabrum, Crambe crambe, Scalarispongia scalaris, and Ircinia oros died during laboratory preparation or shortly after deployment in the harbor. Individuals of C. reniformis initially underwent a moderate size reduction but subsequently stabilized their biomass.
The sponges demonstrated remarkable morphological plasticity, including continuous substrate crawling (up to 12.7 cm of total displacement) and the capacity to recover from disease.
Some individuals underwent body fission [asexual reproduction?] during warm months, generating clonal offspring that nearly doubled the size of the experimental population in the harbor.
Collectively, the results indicate that the high survival of this species in the degraded harbor environment, together with its resistance to disease, its ability to proliferate clonally, and its capacity to reposition itself for improved environmental adaption, makes C. reniformis a highly suitable candidate as putative habitat engineer in future multitrophic approaches aimed at enhancing biodiversity and renaturalizing degraded harbor environments and other anthropogenically impacted coastal habitats."

Yale University: The unforeseen consequences of the ‘great aging’ of America or Gerontocracy in America

Food for thought! What is democracy by elected representatives? A tyranny of the  majority?

Is this Yale professor inciting/stoking an uprising/revolution of the younger against the elderly?

His chosen dichotomy is dubious and very simplistic! His prescriptions are even more dangerous and are calling for big government if not socialism!

According to Google Scholar this professor "Samuel Moyn
Professor of Law and History, Harvard University" has only a total citation count of 14521 (as of 7/30/2026 since 2021), but he has authored over 480 publications. Not very impressive!

Caveat: I did not read his book.

"Yale law professor Samuel Moyn’s new book argues that a “gerontocracy” now holds sway in America, with wealth and power disproportionately concentrated in the hands of older people. In a Q&A, Moyn explains how that happened, why it’s a problem, and how we might fix it."

"What Moyn calls “the great aging” has, he says, transformed America into a society in which older people control a disproportionate amount of political power and wealth [???] and “hoard” jobs and housing [???], depriving the young of opportunity and political say.

Some of the statistics Moyn cites: The median age of congresspeople is more than 60. The median age of voters is 52; in some campaigns, donor ages average as high as 70.

Workers over the age of 55 now comprise nearly a quarter of the workforce, compared to 10 percent in 1990. ...

“If Americans deserve a society that is oriented to innovation and problem-solving, and equips and launches the young into the prime of life, the country is heading the wrong direction,” Moyn writes. ...

His book prescribes a host of possible strategies for wresting control from the aged, from making voting mandatory [???] and boosting public funding [???] of elections to reevaluating age-related tax breaks and bringing back mandatory retirements. Finally, he suggests that a more socialistic model of elder care in America would help reduce the angst around aging that compels older workers to cling to jobs and wealth. ..."

US government bans new foreign-made humanoids, robot dogs, and solar inverters, citing risks to national security targeting China
