Misnomer SARS-Cov-2

I am certainly no expert in medicine or biology, but I have a strong hunch that attaching the fear arousing, deadly SARS (severe, acute respiratory syndrome; see e.g. here, here) prefix to the name of the latest coronavirus is incorrect! It also reminds us of MERS. This could be a case of the power of labels.

The naming chosen for this new coronavirus certainly helped to have many politicians run for cover and mandate extensive lockdowns, face masks, social distancing and the like. Thereby risking to cause one of the severest economic recessions in a generation!
It also helped to trigger massive public funding of research for scientists probably for years to come!

"SARS was a relatively rare disease; at the end of the epidemic in June 2003, the incidence was 8,422 cases [worldwide, I presume] with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 11%."
Well, the new coronavirus caused by now (6/30/2020) more than 10.2 million cases worldwide, but the actual fatality rate is perhaps as low as 0.5% or at most around 5%.

Also the fact that children are apparently little affected by this virus should have cautioned us not to go to extremes!

To my insufficient knowledge, little information was so far provided regarding the similarity of the new virus compared to e.g. the common cold coronavirus.

What seems to have happened here is that this new coronavirus was treated as if it was a severe medieval plague like Black Death, which it clearly is not! Covid-19 turned out to be not much more worse than a severe flu season. Precaution and fear has again trumped common sense and rational approaches! When precaution and fear became worse than the disease ...
