Rand Paul GRILLS Dr. Fauci for His Inconsistencies on Coronavirus Guidance
President Trump made a huge mistake not to have fired this clown Fauci! He has come out with so many preposterous forecasts etc.! He has been at the same job since 1984, clearly a sign that he has no ambitions etc.!

Bravo to the management of this business! Hope, other businesses affected by the latest unnecessary lockdown order will join!
This idiocy of medieval responses (lockdowns, quarantine, face masks etc.) to a medieval superstition (Covid-19) by our politicians has to stop finally!
How many more businesses have to be bankrupted and how many more employees loose their jobs for this idiocy!

Race After Technology: Shining Light on the New Jim Code
Even the prestigious Institute for Advanced Studies worships the cult of racism! Incredible! This is not science but medieval superstition!
"Read an excerpt from Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code, the recent book from Ruha Benjamin, Member (2016–17) in the School of Social Science, that seeks to understand how emerging technologies can reinforce white supremacy and deepen social inequity." (source)
"Now, in the age of big data, many of us [presumably black Americans] continue to be monitored and measured, but without the audible rumble of helicopters to which we can point. This doesn’t mean we no longer feel what it’s like to be a problem. We do. This book is my attempt to shine light in the other direction, to decode this subtle but no less hostile form of systemic bias, the New Jim Code."

Misnomer SARS-Cov-2
I am certainly no expert in medicine or biology, but I have a strong hunch that attaching the fear arousing, deadly SARS (severe, acute respiratory syndrome; see e.g. here, here) prefix to the name of the latest coronavirus is incorrect! It also reminds us of MERS. This could be a case of the power of labels.
The naming chosen for this new coronavirus certainly helped to have many politicians run for cover and mandate extensive lockdowns, face masks, social distancing and the like. Thereby risking to cause one of the severest economic recessions in a generation!
It also helped to trigger massive public funding of research for scientists probably for years to come!
"SARS was a relatively rare disease; at the end of the epidemic in June 2003, the incidence was 8,422 cases [worldwide, I presume] with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 11%."
Well, the new coronavirus caused by now (6/30/2020) more than 10.2 million cases worldwide, but the actual fatality rate is perhaps as low as 0.5% or at most around 5%.
Also the fact that children are apparently little affected by this virus should have cautioned us not to go to extremes!
To my insufficient knowledge, little information was so far provided regarding the similarity of the new virus compared to e.g. the common cold coronavirus.
What seems to have happened here is that this new coronavirus was treated as if it was a severe medieval plague like Black Death, which it clearly is not! Covid-19 turned out to be not much more worse than a severe flu season. Precaution and fear has again trumped common sense and rational approaches! When precaution and fear became worse than the disease ...

China’s Palace Diplomacy in Africa
It is quite shocking how much influence China has gained in the past five decades in dozens of African countries!
"... that since 1966, Chinese companies have built or renovated at least 186 African government buildings, including 24 offices or residences of heads of state. Of the 70 buildings for which I found financing information, the Chinese government or a Chinese company financed all but three, and Beijing partially or fully subsidized the construction costs for at least 45 of the 70 buildings. ...
Certain cheap Chinese products, particularly technology such as smart phones, are hugely popular with African consumers, and Chinese firms have built most of the continent’s 3G and 4G telecoms networks. ...
he Chinese government has allegedly made direct cash payments to heads of state or ruling parties in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Somalia, and Zambia. Chinese companies have reportedly bribed presidents, senior government officials, or their family members in Benin, Chad, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. ... Others take the form of expensive gifts: exotic tiling for a dictator’s mansion, a helicopter for a coup leader, a lavish wedding for a prime minister, or new headquarters for ruling parties in Namibia, Zambia, and Sierra Leone ...
Chinese companies are particularly well suited to provide a political boost because they can move quickly, in part because many are willing to forego encumbering environmental impact studies or ignore local labor laws. ...
This charm offensive has helped make Africa one of Beijing’s most dependable sources of support. African states comprised nearly half of the 37 signatories of a 2019 open letter defending China’s human rights abuses of its minority Uighur population. Last year, many African countries supported the Chinese candidate to head the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization in a vote he easily won over the U.S. supported aspirant, and cast 30 of the 79 “yes” votes to pass a controversial Russia and China-backed U.N. cyber crime resolution opposed by the United States and many European countries."

A Book Talk on The Return of Great Power Rivalry with Dr. Matthew Kroenig
Recommendable!
"In his book, he argues that democracies are uniquely prepared to overcome any challenge autocratic rivals pose, despite growing concerns. In aggregate, Kroenig contends, democracies outcompete autocracies. ... Conversely, autocracies often have to spend more on internal security compared to external. ... Kroenig responded by mentioning that both Putin and Xi fear the spread of democracy, and are leveraging technological capabilities to facilitate authoritarianism worldwide. ... Korenig emphasized that if a “Cold War” means a serious competition, then yes. If it means that we are approaching a high likelihood of war, then no. Compared to the Cold War and the current era, the US will need to create new strategies and policies instead of following the old guidelines like “containment.”"
Most of these observations are not new, they are just a confirmation! Or should we be alarmed, because these well known assurances about the superiority of democracies over authoritarian regimes may sound complacent?
P.S. I did not watch the talk itself

Boris Johnson vows 'Roosevelt' style plan to get UK back on track from coronavirus
If this is indeed true that Prime Minister Johnson plans a Great Deal style government program, then he is much more foolish than I thought! He may even surpass the very embarrassing Prime Minister May!
Does this fool Johnson not know that President Roosevelt was the most socialist president the United States ever had! For any British Prime Minister to aspire to such a lousy U.S. president is incredible!
It appears that not only e.g. Germany or France have serious issues with their many inept and incompetent politicians comprising their political classes.
Johnson would be much better advised to try international free trade with the former Commonwealth countries, lower taxes, and deregulation a la Margaret Thatcher!

Why Capitalism Is A Myth!
Posted: 6/29/2020
Just take the public education of our children in Western countries as an example. Attendance is compulsory and enforced by the government under penalty or fines if not worse. Home schooling of children is e.g. prohibited in Germany. Private run schools for children are fairly rare and regrettably unaffordable to many parents.
This tight and expansive government control of the education of our children is irreconcilable with free market capitalism and a constitution conceived in individual liberty! Most parents would voluntarily and freely make every effort to get their children the best education possible. Free markets and private charity would provide plenty of education opportunities for our children! In the age of the Internet, the almost exclusive authority of the government on the education of our children is not justified at all anymore!
It is high time to largely privatize the education of our children and let parents and older children make their choices about the education of children.

"As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years." (Source). This is extreme and not warranted!
Unfortunately, the Founders made a huge mistake not to be more specific about intellectual property rights in the U.S. Constitution!
"Article 1, Section 8, Clause 8 of the Constitution gives Congress the power “to promote the Progress of Science and Useful arts, by securing, for limited Times, to Authors and Inventors, the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.”
I don't believe the Founders had in mind the life of the author plus an additional 70 years!

Three extraordinary women run the gauntlet of science — a documentary
What shoddy journalism is this coming from Nature Journal! This article is regurgitating lousy propaganda and demagoguery!
"Ask people to picture a scientist, and what do many imagine? A white man in a white lab coat, sadly."
What the heck does this have to do with those ideological slogans like systemic racism, sexual harassment and institutional bias! This is analogous to Nazi antisemitic propaganda!
"It [the movie] chronicles, through the stories of three extraordinary female researchers, the gender and racial biases that drive so many people out of science. All the usual suspects are here: systemic racism, institutional bias, sexual harassment. Together, they tell so many aspiring researchers the lie that they do not belong."
What utter nonsense!
"The third story comes from Jane Willenbring, a geoscientist who in 2016 filed a formal complaint accusing her PhD adviser, David Marchant, of routinely abusing her during fieldwork in Antarctica years before. Marchant, who has denied the allegations, was sacked from his post at Boston University in April 2019 after an investigation."

Karl Marx Despised Society's Poorest People

Work from his lab had shown that the RNA binding protein PTB prevents the activation of neuronal factors in non-neuronal cells and that deleting it could convert fibroblasts into neurons in culture. ...
Using genetically engineered mice in which astrocyte-specific production of PTB could be switched off at will by injecting a silencing RNA, the team observed that several weeks after PTB depletion, the cells began producing neuronal markers, with the number of ex-astrocytes producing such markers increasing as the weeks went by."

Experimental peptide targets Covid-19
Good news! This is only the beginning of using computer modeling to find new therapeutics for diseases!
"Using computational models of protein interactions, researchers at the MIT Media Lab and Center for Bits and Atoms have designed a peptide that can bind to coronavirus proteins and shuttle them into a cellular pathway that breaks them down. ... Their idea was to have their peptides recruit naturally occurring proteins called E3 ubiquitin ligases, which can mark proteins for destruction when cells no longer need them. ... [researchers] recently used similar computational methods to design improved versions of enzymes used for the genome-editing technique known as CRISPR. Their new CRISPR-Cas9 enzymes, together, can target more than 70 percent of DNA sequences, while the most commonly used form of CRISPR-Cas9 reaches only about 10 percent."

US inmates got virus relief checks, and IRS wants them back
Sometimes even news about the IRS can be sort of funny! How did this actually happen? OK, legislators were in a hurry and failed to exclude prison population from receiving these relief checks.
But why would the IRS have prison addresses on file? Do any prisoners file annual tax returns? Are they short-term prisoners or freshly incarcerated?
"Hundreds of thousands of dollars in coronavirus relief payments have been sent to people behind bars across the United States, and now the IRS is asking state officials to help claw back the cash that the federal tax agency says was mistakenly sent. The legislation authorizing the payments during the pandemic doesn’t specifically exclude jail or prison inmates ..."

Boston bans facial recognition due to concern about racial bias
The return of medieval superstition! When facial becomes farcical!
I bet the advantages of face recognition far outweigh any dubious concerns about "racial bias".
"The Boston City Council today voted unanimously to ban facial recognition, making Boston the largest city in the country to ban the technology since San Francisco passed the first citywide ban in May 2019. Nearby Somerville, Massachusetts passed a facial recognition ban roughly a year ago as well."

Newly observed phenomenon could lead to new quantum devices
Amazing stuff!
"The way electrons interact with phonons ... determines the physical processes that take place inside many electronic devices. These interactions affect the way metals resist electric current, the temperature at which some materials suddenly become superconductors, and the very low temperature requirements for quantum computers, among many other processes.
But electron-phonon interactions have been difficult to study in detail because they are generally very weak. The new study has found a new, stronger kind of unusual electron-phonon interaction: The researchers induced a Kohn anomaly, which was previously thought to exist only in metals, in an exotic material called a topological Weyl semimetal."

Nanoparticles boost cancer immunotherapy
Good news! Cancer is history!
"They showed that if they treated mice with existing drugs called checkpoint inhibitors, along with new nanoparticles that further stimulate the immune system, the therapy became more powerful than checkpoint inhibitors given alone. ... The MIT team devised a way to package and deliver small pieces of DNA that crank up the immune response to tumors, creating a synergistic effect that makes the checkpoint inhibitors more effective. In studies in mice, they showed that the dual treatment halted tumor growth, and in some cases, also stopped the growth of tumors elsewhere in the body. ... "

30 Facts about Covid-19 – Swiss Policy Research
Very recommendable! Almost everything about Covid-19/SARS-Cov-2 are totally overblown and exaggerated!
Way too many Western politicians have been cowards not to stop the nonsense of lockdowns etc.
"1) According to the latest immunological and serological studies, the overall lethality of Covid-19 (IFR) is about 0.1% and thus in the range of a strong seasonal influenza (flu).
4) Up to 80% of all test-positive persons remain symptom-free. Even among 70-79 year olds, about 60% remain symptom-free.
6) The median age of the deceased in most countries (including Italy) is over 80 years (e.g. 86 years in Sweden) and only about 4% of the deceased had no serious preconditions. The age and risk profile of deaths thus essentially corresponds to normal mortality.
8) Up to 30% of all additional deaths may have been caused not by Covid19, but by the effects of the lockdown, panic and fear. For example, the treatment of heart attacks and strokes decreased by up to 60% because many patients no longer dared to go to hospital."

Transparent graphene electrodes might lead to new generation of solar cells and display screens
This could be a breakthrough for display screens, solar cells etc.!
"A new way of making large sheets of high-quality, atomically thin graphene could lead to ultra-lightweight, flexible solar cells, and to new classes of light-emitting devices and other thin-film electronics. The new manufacturing process, which was developed at MIT and should be relatively easy to scale up for industrial production, involves an intermediate “buffer” layer of material that is key to the technique’s success. The buffer allows the ultrathin graphene sheet, less than a nanometer (billionth of a meter) thick, to be easily lifted off from its substrate, allowing for rapid roll-to-roll manufacturing."

"China has become an indispensable economic and strategic partner for Iran. Over the last decade, Chinese companies have invested more than US$5 billion in upgrading Iran’s gas refinement and oil infrastructure, expanding highways, updating Tehran’s metro system (which was originally built with Chinese assistance) and developing the Mehran Petrochemical Complex in western Iran.
During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Iran in January 2016, President Hassan Rouhani announced that ‘China and Iran plan to build economic ties worth up to $600 billion’. The volume of trade between the two sides grew from US$1.6 billion per year in the 1980s to US$15 billion in 2007 and around US$45 billion in 2014–15 (in 2018 it dipped to US$33 billion)."
