On DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via Reinforcement Learning

Here is a summary of my review of this DeepSeek paper:
  1. It seems to leave too much unexplained or only vaguely described.
  2. The list of 39 references is not very impressive at all.
  3. The usual ablations and variations are missing.
  4. Implicitly, this paper requires you to read a second paper by DeepSeek if you want to understand their "pure RL" approach, i.e. "Deepseekmath: Pushing the limits of mathematical reasoning in open language models". The cross-references to this paper are poorly done.
As of 1/31/2025 this paper is cited only 2 times according to Google Scholar.

Typical excerpts from the paper:
"... One of the most remarkable aspects of this self-evolution is the emergence of sophisticated behaviors as the test-time computation increases. Behaviors such as reflection—where the model revisits and reevaluates its previous steps—and the exploration of alternative approaches to problem-solving arise spontaneously. These behaviors are not explicitly programmed but instead emerge as a result of the model’s interaction with the reinforcement learning environment. This spontaneous development significantly enhances DeepSeek-R1-Zero’s reasoning capabilities, enabling it to tackle more challenging tasks with greater efficiency and accuracy. ...

Aha Moment of DeepSeek-R1-Zero A particularly intriguing phenomenon observed during the training of DeepSeek-R1-Zero is the occurrence of an “aha moment”. This moment, as illustrated in Table 3, occurs in an intermediate version of the model. During this phase, DeepSeek-R1-Zero learns to allocate more thinking time to a problem by reevaluating its initial approach. This behavior is not only a testament to the model’s growing reasoning abilities but also a captivating example of how reinforcement learning can lead to unexpected and sophisticated outcomes.

This moment is not only an “aha moment” for the model but also for the researchers observing its behavior. It underscores the power and  beauty of reinforcement learning: rather than explicitly teaching the model on how to solve a problem, we simply provide it with the right incentives, and it autonomously develops advanced problem-solving strategies. ..."

From the abstract:
"We introduce our first-generation reasoning models, DeepSeek-R1-Zero and DeepSeek-R1. DeepSeek-R1-Zero, a model trained via large-scale reinforcement learning (RL) without supervised fine-tuning (SFT) as a preliminary step, demonstrates remarkable reasoning capabilities. Through RL, DeepSeek-R1-Zero naturally emerges with numerous powerful and intriguing reasoning behaviors. However, it encounters challenges such as poor readability, and language mixing. To address these issues and further enhance reasoning performance, we introduce DeepSeek-R1, which incorporates multi-stage training and cold-start data before RL. DeepSeek-R1 achieves performance comparable to OpenAI-o1-1217 on reasoning tasks. To support the research community, we open-source DeepSeek-R1-Zero, DeepSeek-R1, and six dense models (1.5B, 7B, 8B, 14B, 32B, 70B) distilled from DeepSeek-R1 based on Qwen and Llama."

Trump to slap tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada on Saturday: White House for failing to interdict and prevent illegal fentanyl export and trafficking

Whether tariffs are a good instrument to achieve the goals is debatable!

However, one may safely assume that the US has tried before to negotiate with these three countries to do more about fentanyl export without much effect.

It has been reported and claimed many times that China neglects or even allows for precursor chemicals to be produced and exported.

Mexico too is supposedly doing too little to interdict and prevent illegal drug production and trafficking.

As far as Canada is concerned I am not particularly aware of its involvement, but the open border sure are an opportunity.

Physicists discover — and explain — unexpected magnetism in an atomically thin material tri-layer graphene

Amazing stuff! Superimposed, hierarchical moire lattices.

"MIT physicists have created a new ultrathin, two-dimensional material with unusual magnetic properties that initially surprised the researchers before they went on to solve the complicated puzzle behind those properties’ emergence. As a result, the work introduces a new platform for studying how materials behave at the most fundamental level — the world of quantum physics. ...

worked with three layers of graphene. Each layer was twisted on top of the next at the same angle, creating a helical structure akin to the DNA helix or a hand of three cards that are fanned apart.

Helicity is a fundamental concept in science, from basic physics to chemistry and molecular biology. With 2D materials, one can create special helical structures, with novel properties which we are just beginning to understand. This work represents a new twist in the field of twistronics ..." ...

Twistronics can lead to new properties in ultrathin materials because arranging sheets of 2D materials in this way results in a unique pattern called a moiré lattice. And a moiré pattern, in turn, has an impact on the behavior of electrons. ...

In the current work, the helical structure created by the three graphene layers forms two moiré lattices. One is created by the first two overlapping sheets; the other is formed between the second and third sheets.

The two moiré patterns together form a third moiré, a supermoiré, or “moiré of a moiré,” ... “It’s like a moiré hierarchy.” While the first two moiré patterns are only nanometers, or billionths of a meter, in scale, the supermoiré appears at a scale of hundreds of nanometers superimposed over the other two. ..."

From the abstract:
"The intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is driven by non-zero Berry curvature and spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. This effect can be realized in two-dimensional moiré systems hosting flat electronic bands but is not usually seen in inversion-symmetric materials.
Here, we show that this physics is manifested in helical trilayer graphene—three graphene layers, each twisted in sequence by the same angle—although the system retains global in-plane inversion symmetry.
We uncover a phase diagram of correlated and magnetic states at a magic twist angle of 1.8∘, which is explained by a lattice relaxation that leads to the formation of large periodic domains where in-plane inversion symmetry is broken on the moiré scale.
Each domain harbours flat topological bands with opposite Chern numbers in the two valleys. We find correlated states at multiple integer and fractional electron fillings per moiré unit cell and an AHE at a subset of them. The AHE disappears above a critical electric displacement field at one electron per unit cell, indicating a topological phase transition. We establish helical trilayer graphene as a platform that presents an opportunity to engineer topology due to its emergent moiré-scale symmetries."

Unprecedented Defense Ministry Purge Sparks Concern in Russian Elite

Is the end of the megalomaniac and war criminal Putin the Terrible near? Hope and pray!

When will the lethargic, apathetic, and Russian Slav(e)s finally get rid of their last tsar, the megalomaniac and war criminal Putin the Terrible! How many more young Russian men have to die or be maimed because Putin the Terrible has conducted a “special military operation” in the Ukraine since February of 2022!

"... The biggest source of tension within the Russian elites in 2024 was the purge of the Defense Ministry. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was moved to a different post, and several dozen officials were detained over the course of many months, including three former deputy defense ministers. The shake-up was likely conceived as a way to improve the management of Russia’s ballooning military spending. In order to speed up the process of clearing out Shoigu-era placeholders, the Kremlin opted for a method that could be described as “rotation through repression.” This is not a new approach, but the scale of what occurred at the Defense Ministry is unprecedented. The purge has not only redirected rent flows associated with the ministry, but also led to the dismantling of Shoigu’s entire clan within the Russian elite. Although Shoigu seems—for the moment—to be under the personal protection of President Vladimir Putin, he has been powerless to intervene in unfolding events. The easiest way to understand the purge is to look at the criminal cases that followed the first—and most high-profile—arrest: that of Shoigu’s long-time associate, ex-deputy defense minister Timur Ivanov. Each wave of arrests seemed to lead to new arrests in turn, as well as generate new charges against Ivanov himself. After Ivanov’s arrest in April 2024, he was charged with the embezzlement of 1.18 billion rubles ($11.5 million). That was followed by the arrest of two other senior officials at the Defense Ministry: Yury Kuznetsov, accused of selling state secrets to contractors linked with Ivanov, and Vladimir Verteletsky, who oversaw spending on digitization. ..."

Top Army aviators with hundreds of flight hours were on routine flight when helo collided with jet. Really!

That story/narrative does not seem to add up!

Routine flight??? Perhaps, the civilian jet was on a routine, predetermined route, scheduled flight attempting to land on the Reagan airport, but obviously not the Army helicopter!

This can not explain the enormous failure of the Army helicopter pilot and whoever else was on board of this Army helicopter. On the contrary!

Hopefully Hegseth and Trump will vigorously investigate this horrific incident without reservation or hesitancy!

"The U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter that collided midair with an American Airlines passenger jet above Reagan National Airport in Washington on Wednesday night was piloted by experienced aviators that typically fly VIP missions in busy airspace, according to a retired Army chief warrant officer with over 30 years of flying experience, who serves in the Headquarters Department of the Army Aviation Directorate at the Pentagon. ...

described the crew members, whose identities have yet to be released, as “very experienced.” ...

“The instructor pilot was flying the aircraft with a fellow pilot in command, so both of those crew members can manage that aircraft by themselves. It was an annual evaluation that is conducted by every Army aviator that they fly day and night,” he said, “Even the crew chief in the back has been in the unit for a very long time, very familiar with the area, very familiar with the routing structure. So we don’t see that at all as being any impact on what happened.”

Koziol confirmed that the instructor pilot in command of the aircraft had logged 1,000 flight hours and the other pilot had 500 hours under their belt. ..."

Google Maps annoyances

I was trying to get driving directions from our home to a place about 27 miles away in the Phoenix metro area.

My wife and I prefer to drive off highway. The option avoid highways did not work as expected. Despite the option was checked, Google Maps still offered a route containing a section of highway totally unnecessary.

I customized the route by dragging on the screen and sent it to my phone. However, when I opened the saved map link on my phone my customized map was altered.

Lastly, why does Google Map lacks an option for simplest route (least number of turns) instead it offers only optimized, zigzag like routes in urban areas. We certainly prefer a simple, easy to follow routes without having to glue our eyes on a display showing the current position on the map or having to listen to the instructions.

Discovering how fat cells play a protective role in skin fibrosis development

Good news!

"... In a new study, Yale researchers have started to uncover what happens at the cellular and molecular levels as skin fibrosis progresses, and the findings, they say, yield potential targets for treating fibrotic diseases in the future. ...

the researchers found that adipocyte depletion happens quite early in the fibrotic process.

Adipocytes in the skin contain one large liquid droplet of fat molecules (or lipids), which can be released from the cell in response to various biological events. In the two mouse models of skin fibrosis used in the new study, the researchers observed that adipocytes in the area where fibrosis was stimulated lost their lipid droplets as early as five days into fibrosis development.

When the researchers stopped fibrosis stimulation, they saw that the adipocytes refilled with lipids as the skin began to recover. ..."

From the abstract:
"During skin fibrosis, extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins are overproduced, and resident lipid-filled, mature dermal adipocytes are depleted in both human disease and mouse models. However, the mechanisms by which the reduction in lipid-filled adipocytes occurs during fibrosis are not well understood.
Here, we identify that adipocyte lipolysis via the rate limiting enzyme, adipocyte triglyceride lipase (Atgl), is required for loss of adipose tissue during skin fibrosis in mice. We find that in two fibrotic mouse models, adipocyte lipolysis occurs early during skin fibrosis development and lipid storage is reestablished during fibrosis recovery.
In mice lacking Atgl in adipocytes, maintenance of adipocyte lipid storage occurs in both chemical and genetic models of fibrosis development. Transcriptional analysis revealed upregulation of lipid metabolism/lipolysis genes in fibrotic patient skin.
Interestingly, loss of adipocyte Atgl-driven lipolysis results in precocious, fibrotic remodeling of the dermal ECM in bleomycin treated mice as indicated by histological and transcriptional changes. These data suggest that dermal adipocyte-derived fatty acids prevent fibrotic ECM remodeling in fibroblasts during fibrosis development.
Thus, we suggest that dermal adipocyte-derived fatty acids are released during fibrosis development and delay fibroblast fibrogenic responses, which may hold therapeutic potential for treating fibrotic diseases."

NCAA Transgender Track Runner Decries Faulty Shoes Despite Destroying Female Opponents by almost 1.8 seconds

Why are female athletes still competing with transgender males? As a female athlete, I would boycott or refuse to compete!

Winning by almost 1.8 seconds is almost an eternity when it comes to short distance track running like 100 or 200 meters!

Biological males who compete in this way against women are jerks! We need e.g. separate sport events for transgender athletes! Had this runner competed against other men he would most likely be a distant runner up.

"Schreiner, whose birth name was Camden, jumped to Instagram to complain that the winning times were not as good as they could have been and placed some of the blame on faulty shoes (called spikes). ...

“Schreiner won the 200-meter event with a time of 25.17 seconds. SUNY Brockport’s Lexi Rodriguez finished in second place with a time of 26.92 seconds,” Fox News reported. ..."

Former German chancellor Merkel Comes Out Of Retirement To Express Anger At German Parliament Voting For Border Control. Really!

What!!! One of the worst German chancellors after 1945, who is largely responsible for turning Germany into a banana republic!

She was a Socialist Unity Party (SED) chancellor! Here is my blog post about her dismal legacy (in German).

"Angela Merkel, the former leader of Germany’s Christian Democrats (CDU, globalist centre-right) and longtime Chancellor of Germany came out of retirement on Thursday to pour scorn on her successor for daring break the so-called cordon sanitaire or firewall that all other parties have imposed against the Alternative for Germany (AfD, populist-sovereigntist right) for years. ..."

Merkel Out of Retirement to Tell Off Germany Voting for Border Control "Former Chancellor Merkel, who led Germany and the continent into the Europe Migrant Crisis of 2015 has made a rare break from retirement to play the elder statesman, decrying her successor as party leader for working with the sovereigntist right to vote through border control rules."

Additional Measures to Combat Anti-Semitism – The White House

Good news! Bravo!

"My Administration has fought and will continue to fight anti-Semitism in the United States and around the world.  On December 11, 2019, I issued Executive Order 13899, my first Executive Order on Combating Anti-Semitism, finding that students, in particular, faced anti-Semitic harassment in schools and on university and college campuses.  Executive Order 13899 provided interpretive assistance on the enforcement of the Nation’s civil rights laws to ensure that they would protect American Jews to the same extent to which all other American citizens are protected.  The prior administration effectively nullified Executive Order 13899 by failing to give the terms of the order full force and effect throughout the Government.  This order reaffirms Executive Order 13899 and directs additional measures to advance the policy thereof in the wake of the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023, against the people of Israel. ...

It shall be the policy of the United States to combat anti-Semitism vigorously, using all available and appropriate legal tools, to prosecute, remove, or otherwise hold to account the perpetrators of unlawful anti-Semitic harassment and violence. ..."

Federal appeals court rules handgun ban on adults under 21 is 'unconstitutional'

Good news! The Second Amendment applies to all adults!

To deny the right to bear arms to young adults was a nice try to chip away on the Second Amendment!

"A federal appeals court on Thursday struck down a handgun ban on adults under the age of 21, ruling that the current age-based restriction violated the right to keep and bear arms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment. ..."

German-Israelis hostage Arbel Yehoud finally released by Hamas

Who knew there was also a German among the hostages held for over 15 months in captivity by the coward and savage killers of Hamas?

What did Chancellor Olaf Scholz do for this hostage if anything? Do Germans not have a particular responsibility when violence is committed against Jews!

"... But Israel was appalled at the scenes that took place during the handover. [hostages] were made to walk through a crowd of screaming people who tried to take photos of them. ...

Arbel Yehoud's brother, Dolev, was killed in the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023. Arbel herself was abducted with the family of her boyfriend, Ariel Cunio, from the Nir Oz kibbutz near the Gaza border. Initially, they hid in the house of her partner's brother but the attackers set fire to it, forcing them all out into the open. Some 1,200 Israelis were killed during the terror attacks, and another 250 were taken hostage. ..."

Family of released Hamas hostage: 'We are deeply emotional' – DW – 01/30/2025 "Hamas has released eight more hostages, among them the German-Israelis Arbel Yehoud and Gadi Moses, in a chaotic but successful handover in Gaza. Yehoud's family told DW they were overwhelmed and grateful."

11 Baltic cables damaged in 15 months, pushing NATO to boost security

Very concerning!

"... Power and communications cables and gas pipelines stitch together the nine countries with shores on the Baltic, a relatively shallow and nearly landlocked sea. A few examples are the 94-mile Balticconnector pipeline that carries gas between Finland and Estonia, the high-voltage Baltic Cable connecting the power grids of Sweden and Germany, and the 729-mile C-Lion1 telecommunications cable between Finland and Germany. ...

“In the last two months alone, we have seen damage to a cable connecting Lithuania and Sweden, another connecting Germany and Finland, and most recently, a number of cables linking Estonia and Finland. Investigations of all of these cases are still ongoing. ...

At least 11 Baltic cables have been damaged since October 2023 — the most recent being a fiber optic cable connecting Latvia and the Swedish island of Gotland, reported to have ruptured on Sunday. Although cable operators note that subsea cable damage is commonplace, the frequency and concentration of incidents in the Baltic heightened suspicions that damage might have been deliberate.

There also are fears that Russia could target cables as part of a wider campaign of so-called “hybrid warfare” to destabilize European nations helping Ukraine defend itself against the full-scale invasion that Moscow has been pursuing since 2022. ...

Several Western intelligence officials ... that recent damage was most likely accidental, seemingly caused by anchors being dragged by ships that were poorly maintained and poorly crewed. ... The official said Russian cables were also severed. ..."

VDMA: Germany's robotics industry 'has lost competitiveness'

Bad news! Germany ranks only fifth after South Korea in installed industrial robots.

"... VDMA R+A said these structural weaknesses were evident in 2024. It pointed to a 16% decrease domestically compared with 2023. ...

The only bright spot for the German robotics and automation industry was exports to the eurozone, with incoming orders rising by an impressive 44% in 2024, noted VDMA. ...

In June 2024, the VDMA warned that growing competition from China was weighing on its own robotics ecosystem. “Many Chinese suppliers have grown strongly in their home markets and are now pushing into Europe,” ...

“With a view to fierce global competition, Germany can no longer afford disadvantages such as disproportionate regulation and excessive costs,” ...

Germany isn’t the only country to see its leading robotics industry see a slowdown. China, the world’s largest industrial robotics market for 10-plus years, expected its industrial robot sales to decline for the first time in five years in 2024."

Asensus Surgical completes gallbladder removal from 16-year-old

More and more surgical robots are developed and are successful! If this trend continues, then soon surgeons will be unemployed in large numbers? 😊

Waymo reportedly testing robotaxis in 10 new US cities in 2025

Good news! Maybe in LA, Waymo will soon drive on highways too.

"Waymo plans to start testing autonomous vehicles in 10 new cities this year, starting with Las Vegas and San Diego, according to The Verge. However, this doesn’t mean the company will launch commercial operations in any of these cities — or even test them in autonomous mode. Waymo told The Verge it will send less than 10 AVs to each city, where they will be manually driven. ..."

General Mark Milley was immediately grateful for the 46th President's last minute pardon. Really!

Proves what a total fool this general is! Anyone else with a scintilla of character would have rejected/declined this preemptive pardon!

Now, this fool will be investigated and most likely be demoted! He lost already his security detail and clearance.

Maybe then he will understand white rage better! 😊

Tulsi Gabbard’s congressional campaign in 2017 tried to suppress coverage of an alleged pyramid scheme linked to her Hindu sect

More potential trouble for her confirmation?

I have blogged here a few days ago that I don't think she is highly qualified for the job of Director of DNI!

"Consultants were paid to handle PR. Gabbard, Trump’s national intelligence pick, was raised in a religious group tied to a firm suspected of running an international scam. The sect accused the WSJ of “falsehoods, half-truths, and misrepresentations.” The firm denied a connection to Gabbard. Her Senate confirmation hearing is tomorrow. Ties to a group that some ex-followers call a cult raise questions about her judgment and loyalty, congressional staffers said. A Trump administration spokeswoman responded on Gabbard’s behalf by taking to social media to call the WSJ’s questions and findings “Hinduphobic smears and other lies.”"

OpenAI is investigating whether DeepSeek trained its new chatbot by repeatedly querying the U.S. company’s AI models

They say, the Chinese copied and imitated a lot to catch up with the West.

Now OpenAI claims they also prompted a lot! 😊

There is an old Chinese proverb: Imitations is the sincerest form of flattery! Caution: Satire.

"OpenAI is investigating whether DeepSeek trained its new chatbot by repeatedly querying the U.S. company’s AI models.
The ChatGPT maker said it’s reviewing indications that the Chinese AI startup extricated lots of data from OpenAI’s tools to help develop its own technology. OpenAI’s terms of service forbid customers from using its AI models’ outputs to do that. DeepSeek didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. An announcement about its cheaply made AI model rattled markets Monday, but some investors doubled down and bought stocks."
