Trigger
Just had my comprehensive eye exam done at the modern, state-of-the-art Midwestern University Eye Institute in Glendale, AZ. It took at least 2.5 hours and it was quite thorough.
Lost My Heart In Heidelberg
The Eye Institute also features one of the latest, advanced devices called a Heidelberg Spectralis Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT). This is truly an amazing device, a product of German engineering by a privately held small business located in beautiful Heidelberg, Germany.
I had a Tracking Laser Tomography done as well.
Very Old Fashioned Exam
Yes, the devices used for the exam appeared to be brand new and latest technology. Plus, the examiner used a notebook and an electronic card to type in results, observations or collect data from my current spectacles etc.
However, that humans are still doing so many repetitive, routine, manual operations is unbelievable. This is also error prone even for experienced doctors.
Most strikingly, no digital pictures were taken in this day and age. This is inexcusable!
Robots To The Rescue
If we have robots that can perform certain surgeries, I expect my eye exam to be conducted by a robot as well.
The robot would allow to take as many digital images or video as needed. These images would be downloaded into a computer (local or in the cloud), which then uses sophisticated software to analyse the images.
The doctor should primarily focus on proper operation and human evaluation of images.
Let’s Bring Eye Exams Into The 21st Century
My conclusion!
