Madonna - Music Evolution | 1982 - 2025
Nice idea, but the music clips are way too short! It is absolutely stunning how many top hits Madonna produced over her long career. Not to mention her dancing, clothing, video clips etc.
Compare Madonna to Taylor Swift! A world of a difference! Taylor Swift could not even make it as a backup singer for Madonna!

Watch a 4-legged robot play badminton better than you
To be beaten by a robot is no fun! Will we have to ban robots from competing with humans in sports?
What is the future of sports and the Olympic Games! Develop a more competitive robot?
"... The robot so adept it can even maintain rallies up to 10 consecutive shots.
And an even bigger surprise – the robot learns from its errors.
They say their robot demonstrates “the feasibility of using legged mobile manipulators in complex and dynamic sports scenarios.
“Beyond badminton, the method offers a template for deploying legged manipulators in other dynamic tasks where accurate sensing and rapid, whole-body responses are both critical,” ..."
From the abstract:
"Coordinating the motion between lower and upper limbs and aligning limb control with perception are substantial challenges in robotics, particularly in dynamic environments.
To this end, we introduce an approach for enabling legged mobile manipulators to play badminton, a task that requires precise coordination of perception, locomotion, and arm swinging. We propose a unified reinforcement learning–based control policy for whole-body visuomotor skills involving all degrees of freedom to achieve effective shuttlecock tracking and striking.
This policy is informed by a perception noise model that uses real-world camera data, allowing for consistent perception error levels between simulation and deployment and encouraging learned active perception behaviors.
Our method includes a shuttlecock prediction model and constrained reinforcement learning for robust motion control to enhance deployment readiness.
Extensive experimental results in a variety of environments validate the robot’s capability to predict shuttlecock trajectories, navigate the service area effectively, and execute precise strikes against human players, demonstrating the feasibility of using legged mobile manipulators in complex and dynamic sports scenarios."

T Cells Take Up Residence in the Healthy Brain Via a Gut-Fat-Brain Axis
Amazing stuff!
"The brain ... is shielded from much of the body by the blood-brain barrier ... And historically, many scientists believed that separation extended to the immune system as well: The brain has its own specialized immune cells called microglia, but immune cells present in the rest of the body were long thought to steer clear of the brain unless there was a disease or other problem requiring their presence.
Now, a team of scientists ... has shown that immune cells known as T cells reside in the healthy brains of mice and humans, trafficked there from the gut and fat. This is the first time T cells have been shown to inhabit the brain under normal, non-diseased conditions. ...
The presence of T cells in the healthy brain and evidence that they travel between the brain and other parts of the body upend the field’s dogma about the role of T cells in the brain, the study authors say. Pathologists have seen T cells in the brain before, but it was assumed they were there responding to current or previous infections. ..."
From the abstract:
"Specialized immune cells that reside in tissues orchestrate diverse biological functions by communicating with parenchymal cells. The contribution of the innate immune compartment in the meninges and the central nervous system (CNS) is well-characterized; however, whether cells of the adaptive immune system reside in the brain and are involved in maintaining homeostasis is unclear.
Here we show that the subfornical organ (SFO) of the brain is a nucleus for parenchymal αβ T cells in the steady-state brain in both mice and humans.
Using unbiased transcriptomics, we show that these extravascular T cells in the brain are distinct from meningeal T cells: they secrete IFNγ robustly and express tissue-residence proteins such as CXCR6, which are required for their retention in the brain and for normal adaptive behaviour.
These T cells are primed in the periphery by the microbiome, and traffic from the white adipose and gastrointestinal tissues to the brain. Once established, their numbers can be modulated by alterations to either the gut microbiota or the composition of adipose tissue.
In summary, we find that CD4 T cells reside in the brain at steady state and are anatomically concentrated in the SFO in mice and humans; that they are transcriptionally and functionally distinct from meningeal T cells; and that they secrete IFNγ to maintain CNS homeostasis through homeostatic fat–brain and gut–brain axes."
On MLLMs are Deeply Affected by Modality Bias
Could be an interesting paper! Caveat: I did not read it.
The availability and diversity of quality training data is probably a major source of this modality bias.
From the abstract:
"Recent advances in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have shown promising results in integrating diverse modalities such as texts and images. MLLMs are heavily influenced by modality bias, often relying on language while under-utilizing other modalities like visual inputs.
This position paper argues that MLLMs are deeply affected by modality bias. Firstly, we diagnose the current state of modality bias, highlighting its manifestations across various tasks.
Secondly, we propose a systematic research road-map related to modality bias in MLLMs.
Thirdly, we identify key factors of modality bias in MLLMs and offer actionable suggestions for future research to mitigate it.
To substantiate these findings, we conduct experiments that demonstrate the influence of each factor:
1. Data Characteristics: Language data is compact and abstract, while visual data is redundant and complex, creating an inherent imbalance in learning dynamics.
2. Imbalanced Backbone Capabilities: The dominance of pretrained language models in MLLMs leads to overreliance on language and neglect of visual information.
3. Training Objectives: Current objectives often fail to promote balanced cross-modal alignment, resulting in shortcut learning biased toward language.
These findings highlight the need for balanced training strategies and model architectures to better integrate multiple modalities in MLLMs.
We call for interdisciplinary efforts to tackle these challenges and drive innovation in MLLM research. Our work provides a fresh perspective on modality bias in MLLMs and offers insights for developing more robust and generalizable multimodal systems-advancing progress toward Artificial General Intelligence."
Figure 1:The big picture of our position on modality bias in MLLMs. (a) We define modality bias in multimodal models, with a focus on MLLMs. (b) We outline a research roadmap on modality bias, highlighting three key directions. (c) We summarize five contributing factors to modality bias: three primary and two secondary.

If true, then President Trump may need to slow down with the deportation of illegal immigrants! Just kidding! I suspect that this need is highly exaggerated by this lobbyist group!
"... In fact, the United States would need to add more than 430,000 new construction workers to keep up with demand—this year alone. Former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik dead at 69
R.I.P. The last 20 or so years of his life were marred by some controversy.
"The "broken windows theory," developed by James Q. Wilson and George Kelling, posits that visible signs of disorder, like broken windows, create an environment where more serious crime is likely to occur. Bernard Kerik was a prominent figure in implementing this theory in New York City, particularly in the subway system, under the direction of then-Police Commissioner William Bratton. " (Google Search)
"... Kerik, whose high-profile career was peppered with success and controversy, shot to prominence when he was named the Big Apple’s top cop by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 2000 and presided over a 63% drop in violent crime.
The 40th police commissioner was also dubbed the “beat cop commissioner” for his hands-on leadership style, making five arrests during his 16-month tenure as commissioner, including one involving two ex-convicts in Harlem driving a stolen van. ...
Mayor Eric Adams, a former NYPD captain, mourned his friend of three decades. “It was just this afternoon that I stopped by the hospital to see Bernie Kerik, my friend of nearly 30 years, before his passing,” [Mayor Adams] said. “He was a great New Yorker and American. Rest in peace, my friend.” ...
His legal troubles worsened in 2009, when he pleaded guilty to eight federal felonies, including charges that he evaded taxes on a $255,000 gift for home repairs and made false statements to federal officials while being considered for the Homeland Security post.
Kerik served four years in federal prison before he was pardoned by Trump in 2020 during his first term in the White House. ..."

"The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Thursday named more than 500 cities, counties, and states it considers sanctuary jurisdictions, accusing them of obstructing federal immigration enforcement. The move is part of a renewed push by the Trump administration to increase pressure on communities it believes are standing in the way of the president's mass deportation agenda.

Novel Mental Health Care in an Los Angeles Jail: trained Inmates attending to and treating each other inmates
This seems to be a very promising approach! Worth trying!
When mental institutions were systematically closed in the 1950s and 1960s, prisons became mental institutions. What was maybe a well meaning reform back then has come with serious negative side effects!
Then there was the 1962 book and 1975 move called "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
"About half the people incarcerated in the Los Angeles County jail suffer from mental illness.
The need for treatment and the chronic inability to meet that need led two incarcerated men to create a peer-led initiative, in which participants are trained to assist others with severe mental illness.
In the Forensic Inpatient Stepdown program, now 4+ years old, the assistants provide emotional support, use de-escalation techniques, teach life skills, and encourage peers to follow treatment plans.
Impact: Since 2021, the program has expanded to reach 400+ patients.
Units using it report 6X fewer self-harm incidents and 35% fewer returns to hospitals.
Mental health advocates say the program offers a model for improving care and rehabilitation inside jails. ..."

And yet it’s making progress, particularly with a peer-to-peer program called Forensic Inpatient (FIP) Stepdown that the [Christian Science] Monitor reported on four years ago. Since then, the nascent program has grown more than sixfold overall, spreading to the women’s jail. Volcanoes on land and on the seafloor emit much more CO2 than anticipated and their effect on climate change
We still know very little about climate, climate change and our planet in general!
Apparently, volcanoes emit much more CO2 than what was known before. Plus, there are many more volcanoes on the seafloor.
Keep in mind: Global warming is a hoax and climate change is a religion! It is being used as a pretext by Big Government and the elite to interfere with our lives. It is among the greatest scams and scandals of at least the last 30 years!
"... Published in the journal, Science Advances, scientists have developed an advanced sensor that can detect volcanic gases with rapid speed and precision.
Using the sensor mounted on a helicopter, the research team measured emissions at Soufrière Hills Volcano on the Caribbean Island of Montserrat, revealing that the volcano emitted three times more CO2 than earlier studies had estimated.
Scientists typically monitor volcanic emissions by focusing on hot vents, known as fumaroles, which release high concentrations of easily detectable acid gases like sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and hydrogen chloride (HCl). However, many volcanoes also have cooler fumaroles, where water-rich hydrothermal systems on the volcano absorb the acidic gases, making them harder to detect. As a result, CO₂ emissions from these cooler sources are often overlooked, leading to significant underestimations in volcanic gas output. ..."
From the abstract (1):
"We performed helicopter-borne optical MultiGAS measurements of volcanic gas emissions from Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat, revealing distinct spikes in SO2 and HCl concentrations within a larger CO2-rich plume. Acid-rich concentration spikes matched the distribution of high-temperature fumaroles, whereas CO2 is emitted broadly from high- and low-temperature fumaroles.
The CO2 flux was 15 to 41 kilograms per second from hot fumaroles and 61 to 131 kilograms per second for the overall plume. The typical CO2 flux calculation of multiplying CO2/SO2 ratio with SO2 flux underestimates total CO2 flux by at least threefold.
We quantified substantial magmatic gas scrubbing by the hydrothermal system, with 56 to 79% of initial HCl and 33 to 68% of initial SO2 lost. This study highlights the importance of precise acid-gas measurements for detecting heterogeneous degassing and suggests that traditional CO2 flux measurements may substantially underestimate contributions from cold CO2 degassing, leading to underestimated global volcanic fluxes."
From the abstract (2):
"Seamounts are isolated elevations in the seafloor with circular or elliptical plans, comparatively steep slopes, and relatively small summit area ... The vertical gravity gradient (VGG), which is the curvature of the ocean surface topography derived from satellite altimeter measurements, has been used to map the global distribution of seamounts ...
We used the latest grid of VGG to update and refine the global seamount catalog; we identified 19,325 new seamounts, expanding a previously published catalog having 24,643 seamounts. Seven hundred thirty-nine well-surveyed seamounts, having heights ranging from 421 to 2,500 m, were used to estimate the typical radially symmetric seamount morphology. First, an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis was used to demonstrate that these small seamounts have a basal radius that is linearly related to their height—their shapes are scale invariant. ..."

Why don't we test students how well they use AI? To go back to older methods seems inefficient if not worse.

AI can hear illness in your voice
Amazing stuff!
"Voice recordings examined by artificial intelligence (AI) could reveal conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Neurologists and other specialists can often diagnose people by listening to how their illness affects their voices, but AI systems could detect more subtle changes and even reveal new mechanisms through which diseases change vocal features. The measure isn’t perfect, not least because people’s voices fluctuate from day to day, and there is a lack of long-term data. But AI-guided vocal analysis might one day allow physicians to monitor their patients remotely and get early warnings of a range of conditions. Because voice is “so non-intrusive and you could do it at home, it’s going to be, I think, very useful” ..."
"... Scientists are looking for voice biomarkers for a variety of health conditions, including diabetes and coronary artery disease, as well as menopause. The voice, they think, carries signatures of health and illness, and with the help of now-ubiquitous recording technology and ever-improving AI models, they’re trying to tease out those signatures for screening, earlier diagnosis and remote monitoring of health.
Voice biomarkers could improve telemedicine by providing an easy, non-invasive way to check for various conditions. Individuals could record a snippet of speech on their phones and send it to their physicians for evaluation. Those running clinical trials could increase monitoring of participants without making them travel to a hospital. Physicians might get early warnings of a range of conditions, from Alzheimer’s disease to COVID-19, and request follow-up tests that could lead to swift treatments. ...
Even conditions that might seem unrelated to speech can show up in the voice. Researchers ... used AI to analyse recordings of around 600 individuals, and discovered that the algorithms could detect type 2 diabetes. In a study published in December 2024, AI correctly identified 71% of diabetes cases in men and 66% in women purely by analysing snippets of their recorded speech. ...
Speech is already used, without the assistance of AI, to diagnose mental-health conditions, from depression to Alzheimer’s disease. Physicians ask people to remember and repeat a series of words to test for memory problems. Individuals with depression tend to speak more softly and slowly, and to speak in more negative and absolute terms, than do people without depression. ..."
